Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 9, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 2 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Tumday, April Cleo W. Mowers publisher and editor Peter Lougheed premier of Alberta A. C. Anderson mayor of Lethbridge Greetings This special edition marks the completion ol the biggest change in The Lethbridge Herald's 67 years, a change that has taken nearly two years and has cost nearly 5 million The climax of the conversion was last September 10, when the first paper came off the new presses It has taken since then to clean out the old equipment and renovate the old quarters Now we can show our readers the new plant and let them share our pride in it Pride is nothing new around The Lethbridge Herald Under the Buchanan regime it was known across Canada as one of the very best of the small-city dailies That reputation was at once an asset and a formidable challenge to the new proprietors when it joined the FP group in 1959 The growth in the community and in the outreach of the paper led us to outgrow our press capacity Since a heavy investment was necessary in any case, we d'ecided two years ago to 'go offset What that has meant is discussed fully in this issue It has been a trying period for the whole staff, getting a paper out every day in the turmoil of conversion and of learning new skills Our readers are indebted to them A newspaper is not just a business It is essential to the functioning of a free society It is a matter of historical record that only a seif-supporting press, free of subsidy by government, trade union, political party or industrial philanthropist, can be truly free and truly .servjua free people The Herald has gambled No one is compelled to buy or read the paper, or to advertise in it. We are gambling that our readers will continue to do so, and thus justify the cost of this change They will buy it if it is worth buying, if it continues to serve the if it helps them to thread their way through these chaotic days And if it does that, it will be of continued value to the advertiser Our pledge is to continue to gather and print the significant news as fully and fairly as human and physical limitations permit With our new processes and new equipment we think we can do it better It is a pleasure to extend the best wishes of the government of Alberta to the management, staff and readers of The Lethbridge Herald The Herald has had an enviable reputation of service to the people of Southern Alberta for nearly 70 years During this time the community has grown, diversified and strengthened, in large measure because of its local aggressive and positive communications media. This is the web ol information and opinion essential to binding a region together I hope that for another 70 years the people of Southern Alberta will continue to feel as well served as during the past 70 years A community is judged by the calibre of news and advertising communications facilities. We are fortunate in having an excellent daily press The Herald stands high among the newspapers of Canada, it has a continuing path of service built on excellent service. A news media that possesses management and staff ability in depth Certainly a good reason for our mutual successes Through the foresight of executive management and staff, a splendid modernization program has been accomplished Technical equipment and expansion of space requirements that will satisfy the demands for many years to come The Lethbridge Herald is a most important continuing resource in assisting the promotion of all Southern Alberta that continues to prosper and grow at an unprecedented rate Communication is so vital in todays society We pay tribute to management and staff for the particularly effective interesting way in which they objectively present the news in all its phases to the public Congialulalions. and continuing success to c'veiv one involved in this particular area of community responsibility ;
