(CP) The British Columbia Association of Broadcasters has honored the president of British Columbia Television of Vancouver, J. R. Peters, as its broadcaster of the year. Mr. Peters received his award foV outstanding contribution to the broadcasting industry during a career spanning 35 years, including 15 years on the directorate of the BCAB and 10 years with the. Canadian. Association of Broadcasters. He has served as president of both associations and is still vice president of the national body. TOP STATION Mr. Peters also accepted a second award this one for British Columbia Television as TV station of the year. BCTV received the award for a feature news program (rawing attention to the tragic living conditions of a jfoup of Indian families at Good Hope Lake in Northern B.C. CKXR Salmon Arm was named AM station of the year for its' efforts during the Eden forest fire crisis last summer. The station served as communications centre during the disaster, broadcasting warnings, relaying dispatching fircfighting equipment, finding sleeping accommodation and gathering food, even though the fire knocked the station transmitter off the air for several hours. FM station of the year is CFMt New Westminster, honored for a series of color photos reflecting the beauty of the west coast and marketed as posters, with the profits going to Westwater, a water resources group operating at the University of B.C. Laurie Irvine, who retired as head of the broadcast department of the B.C. Institute of Technology last month, was given the "friend the industry" award. He was lauded -for his service in fostering a professionalism which has helped hundreds of new people to find their place in British Columbia's broadcasting industry. I've heard a lot about the refUtration of charitable organizations for income tax purposes. As a donor to tome charities, what should I know about this? A. Canadian charitable organizations issuing receipts for income tax purposes must be registered with the Department, and all receipts issued for donations must show the registration number of the organization. If you have received a receipt which doesn't show this number, you should get in touch with the organization and obtain a proper receipt. Q. I have agreed to work in the United States for my employer for a period of three years. Can Canada Pension contributions be continued on my behalf? A. Under certain circumstances employment outside of Canada by a Canadian employer can be covered. Your employer should contact the nearest District Taxation Office with the full particulars for further information. Q. I arrived in Canada in August last year and am told that when filing my income tax return I have to prorate my personal exemptions. What does this mean? A. It means that you are allowed to claim exemptions for only that portion of the year you were a resident of Canada. For instance, if you were a resident for 200 days, you would be allowed your exemptions multiplied by Q. If I work for a salary, can I make my own arrangements for paying my income tax? A. If the salary vou receive is sufficient to warrant tax deductions at the source, then the employer is required by law to withhold income tax deductions. Q. During the year, I worked for two employers, one during the days and one during the evenings. My day job earned me for the year and the evening job, However, both employers allowed the f600 basic exemption when calculating my Canada Pension Plan contributions. This means I have contributed to the plan for only where I could have contributed on my total earnings minus the basic exemption had I worked for only one employer. How do I go about making contributions on the extra A; You may, make contributions on the at a rate of 3.6 per cent. It will be necessary for you to make this calculation on page 3 of the tax return. Q. During the year I worked for two employers and each employer paid me more than in the year. Consequently I have paid double. Canada Pension contributions. Can I get this money back? A. An employee may claim a refund of any overdeductions or contributions when he files his tax return. Be sure to complete the Canada Pension Plan overpayment section of your tax return.
