Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 6, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Stars of 'The Odd Couple' now living their acting parts PAGE 3 TO THE WILD COUNTRY Winter wear for 40 below zero temperatures is modell- ed by Janet Foster, (co-host with her husband John) of CIJC Television's upcoming hour long documentary Win- ter: A Way of Lite to be tele- cast Wednesday, April 11 at p.m. on To The Wild Country. Narrated by Lome Greene the special explores the Joys ot winter in Canada from the deep cold of Jan- uary to the rushing turret of springtime. By DICK KLEINER hard for Jack Klugman atid Tony Ran- dall to remember back to the days BTOC Before The Odd Couple. All they know now, Tony says, is that it's getting weird. "We seem to be living our Tony says. "And I'm not sure if we we're this way before the show. But now Jack is messy and I'm c'ean, Jack drinks beer and I drink wine, Jack smokes cigars and I don't smoke at all. "He's a real Oscar and I'm a real Felix." Maybe that's the price of suc- cess in two such strongly-con- ceived parts. Maybe all actors who have to live with their characters so lorg and so inti- mately would get that way- Or maybe it's because deep down inside Jack and Tony were really Oscar and Felix al." along. There's no doubt about The Odd Couple's success. As Tony says, "the ratings are too good to be true." It seems certain to run for a few more years which is all Tony wants out of it. "By he says, "I'll be weU enough off financially that I'll never have to take a iob I don't like." He's already talking about jobs he'd like to take, when and f. He says he's heard that the Jalna series sold lo two Europe networks TORONTO The 13-eplsode film drama series, The White- oaks of Jalna, has been pur- chased from CBC television by networks in Finland (Oy. Yleis- radio) and Ireland (Radio Tele- fis it is announced by A. H. Partridge, divisional head of CBC Foreign Relations and Export Sa'ji The series had previously been sold to Thames Television Limited in London, England. Other recent export sales by CBC-TV also include: The La- candons, from the Nature of Things series, to the NHK net- work in Japan; this is the first sale of this program to a fore- eign market. Metropolitan Opera 5n New York is thinking of starting a "Piccolo a little Met, to do smaller operas as opposed to Grand Opera. He says he'd like to become a part of that project. "There are hundreds of smaller he says, "which are never done bee- cause we only have grand opera houses. I'd like to di- rect and stage some of them, some of the early Rossini things and that sort of work." That will wait the end of The Odd Couple. Also waiting that day is Randall's return to New York City on a permanent ba- sis- He still goes back there when he isn't shooting but he spends most of the year and he much prefers New York. "I love the show more than anything I've ever he says. "We get to rehearse and we get to do it in front of a live audience. I even have say in the casting. AH would be well if it was only done in New York. "But they figured it out for me it would cost more per show to do it in New York. That's a year and that's too much." He prefers" the East because he likes what New York has to offer the opera, the mu- seums, the art galleries. "Here in he says, when I have no roles to do, I can't find anything to do with myself." So far, his time in California has been busy, and he has slight thumb-twiddling time. "All my success has meant to me he says, "is that I work 14 hours a day. We have found that we can't get good quality if we shoot fast so we work long days- Besides, both Jack and I would rather work than sit around here doing ab- solutely nothing at all." Apropos of nothing at afl you might be interested in Tony's least favorite line of all time: "This program has been filmed in front of a live au- dience." And, when you think about it, he's right it is redundancy rampant. As he says, "What do they mean? A live audience as opposed to a dead (Newspaper Enterprise Assn.)
