New York Times Service NEW YORK The morning after Miguel Pinero's first play, "Short opened to rave reviews at the New York Shakespeare Festival public theatre, the playwright, instead of basking in his new fame, checked in with his probation officer. Pinero' is a former convict who has spent seven of his 27 years in prison: Before he became a playwright, he was a burglar, mugger, shoplifter, drug addict and drug seller. He began writing "Short Eyes" last year at the Ossinmg Correctional Facility (Sing where he was serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery The story of Pinero's conversion from juvenile delinquency and adult offender to this season's most acclaimed young American playwright (the play has been selling out since it opened last week) appears to his friends to be a dramatic study in human reclamation. Were it not for theatre, Pinero said recently, "I would still be in the looking forward only to finishing his sentence and resuming his life in the streets. Out of prison and into theatre, Pinero is a changed man, according to people who have known him for several Marvin Felix Camillo, a professional actor and director, discovered Pinero when he volunteered to help conduct a theatre workshop at Sing Sing. Camillo, who later directed "Short said that when he first met Mr. Pinero in prison he was very "aggressive" and seemed like a "perennial prisoner." Now, Camillo said, "He is very disciplined and seriously' interested in playwriting." In Sing Sing, Pinero had a prison pallor and wore a cap as a sign of being a revolutionary. He threw away the he turned to theatre. Now he exudes the conf icence and well-being of a professional playwright. He gets 6 per-cent of the gross of "Short Eyes." The first 100 he received he gave to one of his Camillo explained the use of theatre for rehabilitation: "When people such as Miguel, even as children, are locked in a prison situation, they have no education. Their only diploma is their prison record. These are people from the same background I come from. I never went to jail. I was disciplined, I guess.
