Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 3, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta V TUB LBTHVMPWINBHALB NBC TY plans summer reruns 'Snoop Sisters9 series completed By ARTHUR UNGER Chrlstlei Scteace Moaitor HOLLYWOOD, Calif "Darn it, I just blew it, didn't P" whispered the little old lady with the feather in her hat, as she tried to suppress the twinkle in her eye. The hat was pure Ernesta Snoop. The twinkle, though, was pure Helen Hayes. And the two ,have been commingling in "The Snoop Sisters" for the past season as part of the NBC Tuesday Night Movies, starring both Helen Hayes and Mildred Natwick. The last in the series aired Tuesday night, NBC plans to rerun them this summer. Barring unforeseen circumstances like network pickup of an ironclad option, don't count on seeing the Snoop Sisters next season. Miss Hayes, however, just let that fact slip out. She'whispered because we were chatting between takes on the set of the final "Snoop Sisters" taping 'at Universal studios in Hollywood. The, twinkle got devilishly out of control as Miss Hayes commented: "I've had a great and I'd hate to have it go out on a whimper. I just wouldn't want to er.d up disappointing all those people who have been so loyal to me through the years. But, I do wish that people would allow me to be in "The Snoop Sisters' and take no offense at it. If I want to be in a crazy whodunit, I would like to think I've earned the right to do that. first lady of the American Miss Hayes made her professional debut when she was eight years old. She has acted with just about every name in theater and cinema. Blank. Nothing. I'm used to reading lines by Noel Coward, Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, Shakespeare. I don't play around with the words of those boys Today acclaimed as "The she starred in "Farewell to and more recently, "Airport." What next, professionally? "I don't have any theater plans except to enjoy what comes along from an aisle seat. One thing I would like to do is the movie version of 'Front Page' which they plan to make with Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Carol Burnett. I played Mrs. Grant on the stage but I'd like to do Jenny, the charwoman." "Front Page" was written by Ben Hecht and Miss Hayes's husband, Charles MacArthur, who passed on in 1956. They had a daughter, Mary, who died at the age of 19, and an adopted son, James, who is now co-starring on TV in "Hawaii Five-0." Miss Hayes spoke of her husband as "the 'best companion, the perfect husband in every way. I say perfect husband because to me a husband would be imperfect wh-o was too or too bland, too easy to get on with. Charlie kept life exciting. You never knew what was going to come next Certainly I found it a bit lonely after he was gone. But I was blessed with a career, you see, and I just kept on. That kept me afloat." The MacArthurs lived in Nyack, N Y., and Miss Hayes still maintains her residence there. "On the llth of October I'll be she said, "and I'll celebrate my birthday as usual in Nyack with my good friends there. I love the fact that they manage to erase the theatrical part of my life. I belong to the Thursday Reading Club and the Nyack Garden Club. I go to all the meetings, and I love it. They call me Mrs. MacArthur in Nyack, and I like that, too." Miss Hayes is also known as Mrs. MacArthur in Mexico. She has a house in Cuernavaca where she can "get away from all the awful part of fame the part that never leaves you free to melt into the mob." Back in Nyack, although Miss Hayes takes an active part in local social affairs, she generally stays out of politics. But she follows the action pretty carefully. Does Miss Hayes consider herself a women's libber? "I don't think I can quarrel with any of the basic things they are trying to do. But I do to their approach in some instances. I think that feminism sometimes turns into anti-maleism. I don't understand that. Why do so many of them seem to be fighting the loveliest thing that nature ever gave our sex gentleness and special Miss Hayes is especially articulate about law and order and permissiveness. "Crime has been taken'out of the hands of professionals and gone into the hands of the amateurs.
