Sevice, Food, Facilities Poor By West Standards Life Not Easy For All By TOM HOCE Bermuda lay over rows of paslel-hued and palatial hotels. To live in this smart little Bri- Ish colony with no income tax. no unemployment and only a nominal property could anyone ask for more? Yes: Life is not quite so pleasant those unable to maintain m terfrout homes or sail about in sloops. Stenographers earn about a week. Malta-Long A Holiday Favorite Mediterranean Island In The Sun By STEPHEN MARSHALL VALLETTA This old mid- Mediterranean island of Malta, which has long been a favorite with holidayers the first re- corded invasion of it was by the Phoenicians in 14 W B.C.- U becoming increasingly popular as a retirement retreat, es- pecially with Britoiis. The latter is an understand- able development for not only Is MaKa an island in the sun, but it has been associated with the British Empire and Com monvreallh since 1800. The islund is also one of the busier destinations for British Euro- pean Airways, which, in asso- ciation with Malta Airlines, operates several limes daily re- turn flights from London in summer (three times daily hi winter) as well as from twice weekly up to daily flights be- tween the Islands and the cities of Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Rome, Naples, Paler- mo, Catania, Alghero, and Tripoli. The Phoenicians were follow- ed down through the centuries by invasions of Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans and, in 1530, The Order of St. John. This Order, formed during the time of the First Crusade, had been forced from the Holy Land and, fortunately for it and Malta, found a benefactor in Charles V of Spain, who pre- sented the Order with the Mal- tese Islands (there are two small islands in addition to Malta where "they may per- form in peace' the duties of their religion for the benefit of the Christain community and employ their forces and arms against the perfidious enemies of Holy It is the symbol of the Order, the famous eight-pointed cross, which has become s closely identified with The history of Malta is fascinating one and the subject of many volumes, so if you're pi arming a trip try and acquire some knowledge of (he island's background beforehand. It does help, Car hire is an obviuos way of getting around here, of course, but while the roads are gen- erally good, 1 don't think I couK honestly say the driving is ol Ihe highest standard. When 1 mentioned this, somewhat btci- antly, to a Maltese he roared with laughter (as we narrowly missed one of the island juses) and said, "You can say that For visitors who don't wish a hire a car there is a very good bus service to almost every part of the island. U may not be the most comfortable way of getting around, but the services are reliable and cheap. There are several srraU sandy beaches, or partly sandy, to .the north of tho island, with such inviting names as Para- dise Bay, Sunshine Bay, Anchor Bay, and, the one I perfened, Golden Bay. If you're not fussy about sand and don't mind bathing off the rocks, then most of the coastline is yours. There's good bathing to be had in Malla from May to October, hut I must admit I saw quite a few taking the plunge in early April a pleasure I denied my- self after dipping a finger in what did look clear and Invit- ing wsler. If, after the first two or three days of lazing about and swim- ming, you feel that perhaps you should do some sightseeing, there are plenty of excursions daily from Valletta. 1 found the church at Most a fascinating place, and spent a jcast an hour wandering rounc it. And yet, when I spoke to fellow guest in the hotel an asked if he'd been to the churc he replied, "We passed it in th car don't care for churches anyway I've no doub there are many who- woul agree v.ith him, but even so it a pity not to even look in thi church if you are in the area The dome Is the third larges in. the world bigger than St Paul's and the church ca lake a congregation of betwee nine and ten Ihousand. Two olher places particular' worth visiting arc the Blu Grollp, which many visifoi feel is superior to the Capri, arid Mdina, formcri. Mclila, once the capital of u island. This ancient walled ci is full of atmosphere, rnarve lous for photographs arche and things sunshine an shadow. If anything will sen one scurrying to Ihe boc shelves to read about Mai and hislory, a visit to Mdina surely it.
