To theft Ople of Leland i Borough the common schools of the Lebanon Borough school District have now been opened competent teachers have been elected the school houses repaired and two More schools added making the whole number seventeen. Dolring the last two years the frightful jmj he it Hunn that one Hpe for ring Apo in of c Ogunti y has m a measure diverted the attention and destroyed the interest of the pub c in our common schools. The directors therefore feel it their duty to make Jam re than Ordinary exertion to improve our schools and excite anew the interest of the people in the training and education of on children it is a matter of such vital importance not Only to parents but to the Community that none can be excused from a lending a Jie Ping band a and it is withal so Well understood that no explanation or argument is necessary. The directors therefore Appeal to All for Aid and encouragement in their efforts to improve arid promote the education of our children. Your interest in them is the same As ours and although the control of the schools is placed Jedi Pur a hands you can do much for their improvement. Teachers very often feel that their profession does not receive that distinguished consideration from the Public to which its importance entitles it and consequently become tired of their occupation and careless in the discharge of their duties. To prevent this you can do in Uch by showing them socially and otherwise that their occupation is honorable and honoured. You can stimulate and encourage both the teachers and pupils by frequently visiting the schoo is thereby showing that you take an interest in their doings for none Are so disinterested not even children As not to be pleased and encouraged by see ing their efforts appreciated and position respected. You can in a great measure prevent the evil of irregular attendance at school for it is a great evil and unfortunately too common. The scholar who is absent a few Days every month or perhaps every week can make no Progress learns nothing perfect and Dis arranges the whole class to which he belongs. You can see that your children spend at least one hour every evening in looking Over their lessons. This May appear a Small matter and it is a Small matter for parents to devote one hour out of Twenty four to hear their children s lessons or sit by while they look Over them bit it is not a Small matter in its results to the children. Some of our most Learned and distinguished men hav received theirs education by candlelight yet it is not so much what the children actually learn in that hour As the in flue of of the example of the parents showing that they take an interest in their lessons. There Are certain restraints necessary Ito regulated school which sometimes appear harsh and Are unpleasant to parents. If such cases should happen we ask of parents not to be too Hasty and if Niter full consideration they have any complaints to make let them be made to the directors. F the directors Are anxious that ail the children 4n the District who arc old enough and can go should attend school so that none would remain running on the streets. The Street is a bad school Lor children. It turns put graduates for the poor House prison arid Penitentiary and surely there Are no parents so degraded As to wish their children educated for such places. The common schools Are open for All from the poorest to the richest and there is no excuse for parents to let their children run on the streets. From the first Day that the schools commence let not a child that so ppm be Gate i on the streets Send a s7s_. it Ltd them All the first Day and continue to Send to the last. The training and educating of our youth requires eternal vigilance let therefore All unite in continued watchfulness and unremitting Effort to improve our schools and Advance the proper education of our youths so that they May become Good and useful citizens ornaments in society and a Comfort and Blessing to their parents.
