Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - September 30, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Metro A2 Friday Sept Kokomo Tribune Firearms language added Northwestern School Corp has adopted a policy which cans for students caught with firearms at school to be expelled at least a year The policy is a revised form of a rule already in place at Northwestern and is mandated by federal law said Superintendent Patrick J Mark The school board on Tuesday approved the third reading of the policy which adds specific language for firearms pos session Mark said no particular problem with student possession of firearms has been reported at his corporation Police blotter Helicopter used in search FRANKFORT Ind A search for two Kirklin boys that began Thursday afternoon ended early today after an Indiana State Police helicopter was used to find them Clinton County Sheriff Paul Underwood said the boys ages 8 and 10 were found at a farm house about a mile north of Kirklin at possessing nothing but the clothing they were The boys names were not being released early today he said The boys who were friends were last seen at the sheriff said although he did not know where They stopped at a home on 421 about 6 state police helicopter was then used to check area cornfields and the boys were located a short time later Kirklin Volunteer Fire Department and Clinton County sheriff representatives were to meet with the boys at 10 today to try to discover why they fled Suspect fled because of warrants The suspect who was arrested Thursday following a high speed chase was believed to have fled police because of outstanding arrest warrants in Howard and Carroll counties police say Travis N Catron 21 Burnettsville was held on bond at Howard County Criminal Justice Center this morning He was charged Thursday with two counts of criminal reckless ness and one count of resisting law enforcement He was also cited for reckless driving driving while suspended having expired license plates and disregarding an automatic signal According to a Howard County Sheriff Department report Catron was arrested at Thursday at Howard County Criminal Justice Center on a local warrant for failure to appear for a pretrial conference on charges of possession of marijuana resisting lawenforcement and public intox ication He was also wanted on a Carroll County warrant for neglect of child support Correction The location for next weeks try outs for Curtain Call Kokomo Civic Theatre for Children will be in the bandroom of Kokomo High School downtown campus The auditions will be conducted at Monday Tuesday and Wednesday The location has been changed from one published in Thursdays Kokomo Tribune Read me a story Sycamore School pupils Tracie Simmons left and Sarah the class of 12 children read to Karen Youngs class of chil Meese center both sixthgraders read a story to David Fulk dren with disabilities at the school The project was as part of a special reading session Thursday Sycamore designed to teach children photo by Brian Reynolds Buyer again questions Beattys abortion stance Right to Life gives its endorsement to Republican incumbent By JEFF PARROTT Tribune staff writer The question of exactly where Democratic Fifth District congres sional candidate John D Beatty stands on abortion has arisen again in an Indiana Right to Life questionnaire he answered in April Beatry who is trying to unseat Republican incumbent Rep Steve Buyer Nov 8 answered no to the following question Would you vote against any national health bill that would provide payments for abortions with tax dollars or government mandated premiums or that forced insurers to provide coverage for abor tion Health care reform has been pronounced dead in mis Congress but debate over how womens reproductive services are covered in a health plan is expected to heat up on Capitol Hill next year Beattys answer on the question naire combined with his indica tion he would support or laws allowing the termination of life support if a patients quality of lite is no longer deemea desirable has prompted the Indiana Right to Life Political Action Committee to endorse Buyer according to Executive Director Cyndy Martin The fact Buyer is an incumbent and is prolife also contributed to the endorsement she said Martin said she was sur prised and disappointed at Beattys answers in light of the fact he claims to be prolife and has spo ken at Right to Life events in the past Beatty said he was answering a doublebar rel He added if the question was split into two parts as it shouldve been he would have answered no to taxpayer funded abortions but yes to a Beatty Buyer pro plan that forces insurers to vide coverage for abortion He said although he is opposed taxpayerfunded abortions he would support a plan that includes abortion funded by any other means because it is legal according to Roe vs Wade ne said I dont know how much louder I can shout it in his ear Im not in favor of taxpayerfunded abor Beatty said What do I have to do wear a sign around my neck Beattys response in the ques tionnaire brought to light in a press conference at Buyer head quarters marks the second time Beatry has denied he supports tax payerfunded abortions in response to such charges from Buyer In an Aug 16 Beatty cam paign stop in Rensselaer a Right to Life member and Buyer sup porter asked Beatty What are your thoughts on covering abor tion in the health care plan Beatty answered I am not in favor of taxpayerpaid dont want to see it but if it means dont get health care cov erage because of it then Im sorry Ive got to vote for the overall plan although I dont agree with that and would try as hard as I can to get that out or Beattys response then as it is now is that abortion should be dealt with in some way in the plan because it is the law of the Kokomobased Indiana Right to Life has not yet contributed to Buyers campaign and may not Martin said The PAC will meet on Saturday to determine which of the states congressional races it will target she said Regardless of whether it donates to Buyers race Indiana Right to Life will send its newsletter to more than 5th District residents asking them to help campaign for Buyer Martin said Company studies facilities Kokomo Gas Fuel Co said Thursday it will begin soil and groundwater studies next week at its plant facility near Boulevard and Home Avenue to determine if harmful coal tar byproducts are present The site is home to a former manufactured gas plant owned and operated by the utility between 1923 and 1937 James C McFatridge director of gas supply and engineering for Kokomo Gas said the utility does nt have scientific data to accurate ly evaluate whether there are potential risks to public health or the environment But a preliminary study of air samples on the Kokomo Gas and Fuel site last year found no imme diate threat McFatridge said Based on current environmental standards and under certain con ditions some coal tar residues could present a potential risk to public health or the environment Concord Remediation Technologies an engineering firm is performing the soil and groundwater study The project is expected to take two weeks with results available in three to four months The study is part of longterm project launched by NIPSCO Industries parent of Kokomo Gas and Fuel NIPSCO which acquired Kokomo Gas and Fuel in February 1992 as already under taken coal tar studies at seven of 27 sites it owns mostly in north ern Indiana Dan Sullivan an environmental analyst with NIPSCO said none of me site studies to date have uncovered harmful levels of coal tar byproducts Before natural gas was widely available via interstate pipelines and other sources gas was made by heating coal and oil and then stored at various sites The production process often created byproducts and residues primari ly coal tars The tar was sold to commercial companies to be used for road construction waterproof ing and
