corning back from ah 02 deficit in the bestof5 series Only four other teams have done likewise I cant believe it I couldnt believe we won this shot blocking hero Dikembe Mutombo said We really didnt felt like Denver moved into the Western Indy still rattles veterans INDIANAPOLIS AP Teo Fabi has never shaken his rookie jitters at the Indianapolis 500 Eleven years after the Italian shocked the racing world by win ning the pole position at a record speed he still gets nervous Its the same Its probably the most difficult race you Fabi said Saturday as ram washed out the first scheduled day of practice for the May 29 race Sunday should be mostly sunny with highs from 7075 This is the only race where I dont sleep well the night before the race because youre anxious Fabi said Fabi a former Formula One driver came to Indianapolis in 1983 after having driven only one other Iridy car race at Atlanta He quickly passed his drivers test then surprisingly set track records of mph for one lap and mph for four laps in quali fications He was the first rookie to start from the pole position since Walt Faulkner in 1950 and the first rookie qualifier ever to lead the opening lap of the race He actual ly led the first 23 laps but a faulty Oring on his cars refueler after his second pit stop forced him out of the race Still he was the Indy rookie of the year and with victories in four other races finished second to Al Unser Sr in the season standings 39 has had only one other victory however since his rookie year This year in three starts his best finish was seventh in the sea spnopener in Australia At the last oval race at Phoenix he crashed with Hiro Matsushita then as his car was stopped on the track he was rammed by rookie Jacques Villeneuve Conference semifinals against Utah a 31 winner over San Antonio that bestof7 series will open Tuesday night in Salt Lake City Utah beat DenveHn four of five regularseason games In overtime the Nuggets com mitted four 24second violations gave Denver a 96 94 lead with left Mutombo blocked Schrempps layup attempt with to go but Denver was called for a 24second Violation with seconds left Kemp was driving to the basket when Mutombo blocked his 5foot shot with seconds left and Pack then made two free throws with seconds left after being fouled by Kendall Gill Mutombo who averaged blocks during the regular season had eight blocks as well as 15 rebounds and eight points His 31 blocks in the five games was a E layoff record Hakeem Olajuwon ad theold record 30 in the Western Conference semifinals last season Pack led Denver with 23 points Ellis had 19 and Brian Williams came off the bench to score 17 points and get 19 rebounds Pack was 3for5 on 3point shots making him 6of10 from long range during the series The 6foot guard made only six 3 pointers during the entire regular season Denver outrebounded Seattle 5836 and had a dozen blocked shots to two for Gill scored 22 points while Kemp and Schrempf each had 19 for the Sonics The Sonics sent the game into overtime when Gill rebounded a Payton air ball under the basket and laid it in to tie the score at 88 with half a second left Mutombo made an 8foot jump shot at the buzzer bat referee Jess Kersey ruled it was too late Seattle rallied late in regulation after trailing 8477 with left The Sonics tiedthe score at 86 when Payton made a fastbreak layup over Pack with seconds left Denver took the lead at 8886 on Ellis 14footer over Payton with seconds left Seattle scored four baskets in the first of the second half for a 5241 lead and was ahead 6051 with left in the third quarter But the Nuggets outscored the Sonics 92 the rest of the way to cut the Seattle lead to 6260 at the end of three periods And in the fourth quarter it was Seattle which had to play catch up Teo Fabi I remember in 1983 I said Id race maybe a couple more said Fabi 12th in the series stand ings Now 11 years later Im still here Again I dont think it will be very long I have to stop and do something more serious in When he leaves racing hell probably return home tp Italy to work for his brother But leaving racing wont be easy he said If s a difficult Fabi said When you are a professional in sports you make a lot of money life is easier compared to the real world Thaf s why I admire Rick Mears who at the top of his career was able to say Thaf s and do something Fabi left Indy car racing in 1984 and returned to Formula One for the next three years He returned to Indy cars in 1988 Last year he was llth in the standings and had his best finish of ninth at Indianapolis after qualifying more than 13 mph faster than he did 10 years earlier The cars now are very he said A lot safer than they used to be Theyre still drivable But they must try to slow the cars Kendall Gill center and his Seattle teammates went down to a 9894 defeat to Reggie Williams Dikembe Mutombo 55 and the ferocious Denver Nuggets AP photo Redhot Pacers left waiting INDIANAPOLIS AP The waiting ends Sunday for the Indiana Pacers when they learn who their next opponent will be in the NBA playoffs The Pacers have been waiting to learn if theyll face Miami or Atlanta in the second round since sending Shaquille ONeal and the Orlando Magic home by complet ing asweep of their bestof5 series Monday The Hawks and Heat divided their first four games with the deciding game scheduled Sunday afternoon in Atlanta A Miami victory would give the Pacers the home court advantage in the bestof7 second round with the opening game likely to be played Tuesday If the the first two this series would be played in Atlanta Were ready play some coach Larry Brown said Weve been trying to stay sharp waiting to learn who well play next There are a lot of similarities between Atlanta and Miami so that might be to our advantage Im just concerned about main taining the intensity that we had in the final weeks of the season and in the first Indiana was the first team to sweep its first round and was the only team still uncertain of its sec ondround opponent and sched ule after Saturday The last few days if s been kind of hard to focus in on what weve been Brown said Reserve guard Bryon Scott par ticipating in the playoffs for an llth consecutive year has been using his experience to keep a club making its debut in the sec ond round NBA playoffs focused Ive been telling them how important it is to keep focused Keep our goals high and give ourselves a chance to reach said Scott who earned three NBA championship rings with the Los Lakers To reach our r goals its not just one guy its all 12 guys If one guy gets distracted and starts doing something other than what we want and what we need then were in Scott said hes seen no sign of trouble since Mondays 9986 vic tory over Orlando Weve been coming out tp practice and weve been working hard trying to maintain what weve achieved so far and trying to surpass he said Its been important that the team didnt concern itself with a sec ondround opponent Scott added If you keep your focus on your game your team youll be ready for whoever you said Scott who began the season as an unsigned free agent and joined the Pacers in early December and defensively weve been finetuning the things that we have to do to get ready for whoever we Atlanta and Miami do some similar things so it really shouldnt matter to The Pacers closed the regular season with eight consecutive vic tories matching the franchises NBA record four of the games were on the road When we won those four games on the road the attitude of this team Scott said The confidence level rose with those victories I knew then that we were ready to start the play offs We finished off the season strong carried it into the first round Now weve got to have that same hunger exterior will remain intact and be surrounded by a new facade that will closely resemble the present look Fixed lights probably will not be added Parking lots surrounding the sta dium will be torn up and land scaped The built for about will cost about mil lion to expand and renovate The project for a new press box restroprns and cpricession facilities The project will be paid for with taxexempt
