sitting in the waiting room at the hospital when my daugh ter was in labor for our first grand child Waiting for her delivery was more painful to me than my own labor ever was because 1 could do no more than wait The Miracle of Birth Grandmother vs Mother Surprising are the feelings one has upon becoming a grandmoth er for the first time I was totally amazed that I felt like a mother again when my great moment arrived I couldnt believe that becoming a grandmother and becom ing a mother were so much alike I was one of those women crazy Ive been told who absolutely thrilled at each grimace of pain I was so aware of the miracle I was being allowed to create that I never experienced severe pain or fear Becoming a grandmother however was much more painful I was with my daughter from the time she had her first contrac tion I felt the pain each time she did When my granddaughter made her appearance and I had my first glance I was filled with the same emotions I had felt when her mother was born Again I had created a miracle for had it not been for me she wouldnt have been possible in the first place The sensation of childbirth was still so vividly in my mind from own experience I pictured myself giving my daughter advice her turning a deaf ear as I had done to my own mother and her doing things in her own way As a mother I was in command of everything I did for my child but as a grandmother I can only observe Grandmothers have so many more advantages I rernem ber getting up in the night and stumbling tpward the crib diaper ing the tot bathing and doing all of the rnpunds of laundry Now grandma simply holds cuddles enjoys and loves the infant and iands it to its mother for the necessities Discipline in child rearing is a constant thing grandchild manages to totally escape it during her visits There are those things that grandmothers miss The warm emotional sensation of putting a child to your breast for its very life is no longer mine It is now passed on and I can only remember how it was The closeness need never be lost whether one is a mother or a grandmother That is one way in which there is no difference second article was written during a rare quiet tpomentof reflec tion at a time when mychildren began expressing questions on how to cope with raising their children The art of discipline As a very young child attending Sunday School I once had a teach er who made the statement We dont discipline our children dont love them but because we want others to love This phrase has followed me since that very moment When I married at 18 I immediately began to think of raising a family I managed to achieve this goal by giving bifth four times in lessthan five years Suddenly this1 phrase came Sack to me I was and still am a very caring mother but disci plining children was a large responsibility that I hadnt consid ered I soon found that each child was a very different person and each had its own special personality The first born was a son and gave me absolutely no problems as a young child If he would pick up something sharp and I explained that he shouldnt because he might hurt himself he would immediately put down the object However the second child a girl was totally the opposite She would quickly proceed to ampu tate a finger in order to find out that I was sincere with my mation I had to develop a differ ent approach It worked better for this child if I told her that no one cared if she cut herself and she would lay the sharp object down The third child was torn between examples of the other two This poor little girl couldnt keep up with either one of the oth ers so she developed her own unique style of temper tantrum I tried reasoning spaiiking hug ging ignoring and finally resort ed to threatening after this dear little child embarrassed me in public two or three times Being a firm believer that you should not threaten unless you can carry out the threat I had to stand my ground andl follow through I informed her between her screams that if she didnt stop immediate ly I would throw a glass of cold water on her She decided to test me and when I pitched the frigid liquid causing her to take a deep breath she stopped crying and the blue color immediately left her face AH the while I am saying to myself You arent doing this because you dont love her but because It somehow made rite feel a little better as I looked at my soaking child The fourth little darling the poor boy was simply lead around by the npse because the qther three influenced him so much He had managed to pick up all of the other childrens bad traits Somehow I have managed to survive raising them all with the youngest npw ready to graduate from nigh school Raising children is a fantastic challenge it ypu like challenges Ive found that you do not always win a personality test with your children because you often dash YPU have IP pre pare yourself fpr the possibility that they might npt like you from time tp time It js necessary to retain considerable restraint in order tp save your sanity Through all the years pf childrearing I cpntin ue tp tell myself that discipline is a very necessary part pf bve Delbert and
