tensions with Japan congressional carping at the Federal Reserve even new allegations of sexual impropriety by the president all these developments and more are being blamed for the dollars puzzling decline on foreign cur rency markets Economists are scrambling for explanations because the green backs weakness defies basic eco nomic principles The dollar should not be falling at a lime when the economy is doing better than it has in years But that is just what is happen ing The decline grew so worri some last week that the Clinton administration after pursuing a dollar policy described as benign neglect since taking office sud denly reversed course It mounted a massive rescue effort with 15 other nations to bolster the dollar against the German mark and to keep it from hitting a record low against the Japanese yen The rescue had at least limited success but the dollar came under renewed pressure Friday after the government reported that the job less rate fell to percent as pay roll employment climbed by more than 1 million jobs over the past three months a remarkable turn about As has been happening lately however all the good news gave Wall Street a bad case of the jitters with the Dow Jones industrial average losing points and Treasurys benchmark 30year bond tumbling in price to drive its Nursing jobs hard to find in Indiana Some students say they were misled WEST LAFAYETTE Ind AP Graduates from Indianas 40 nursing schools could have a tough time finding jobs according to a survey by the Indiana Com mission for Higher Education Nursing jobs are limited but there also is a backlog of people trying to finish requirements students have difficulty even getting into a program according to the survey People have complained they were misled because once they were admitted to nursing school overcrowding prevented them from completing the required classes said Clyde Ingle Higher Education commissioner This is an untenable he said recently And I believe if the schools of nursing do not get this situation solved the General Assembly will be forced to solve it for The states 40 nursing schools offer a variety of programs rang ing from one to four years and more of study Some schools admit students into the nursing program right away while others accept students into the university and promise later entry into the nursing school Once a student gains admission into a nursing school there still is competition for clinical studies at hospitals and clinics Ingle said Dr Louise Hart head of the Indiana State Nurses Association blamed the backlog on a shortage of faculty to teach nursing cours es Theres also misunderstanding by students she said Once youre admitted to a pro gram doesnt mean youre auto matically admitted to clinicals and students are told that from the Hart said Hospitals are simply filled she said We have a concern and feel compassion for students in that backlog But we also know the realities in the Hart said the General Assembly should provide public universities with the funding necessary to attract advanceddegree nurses to teaching Right now schools cant com pete with hospitals Hospitals pay more to advanced she said Until we address this prob lem the backlog will The competition does not end with officials said There already are about reg istered nurses in the state and officials said hospitals are looking more and more for nurses who have completed graduate work Healthcare reform has con tributed to the nursing squeeze said Jo Brooks head of Purdue Universitys School of Nursing People are spending less time in hospitals reducing the need for nurses she said Mortgage Investors I22b 1 loiter Kokomo IN 46902 PreQualify By Phone 1502 W Sycamore 4527171 LOW RATESFIXED OR VARIABLE CONSOLIDATION LOANS NEW HOME keep supporting the greenback This situation defies normal eco nomic logic Usually a country that is enjoying strong economic growth especially if interest rates are also increasing enjoys a strong
