wants the church Moms memories often made of simple things Picnic meant much to young daughter When I think of my mom I think of bologna Not because shes full of it although Ive accused her of being full of it on more than one occa sion I also think of banana Popsicles Not because shes fruity although once while driving on a country road she slammed on the brakes stopped dead in her tracks and honked and honked for sever al minutes at blowing leaves She said she thought she saw a puppy running across the road I know I didnt believe her either Anyway let me tell you why I think of bologna and Popsicles when I think of my mom At the time we didnt know we were creating a day both of us would remember and cherish for ever sister and brother were at school and Mom and I decided to pull a Pulling a sneaky meant going to the park and playing all day buy ing an ice cream cone or watching a movie Pulling a sneaky meant doing something my older sib lings would be jealous of so we had to keep it a secret Mom and I always pulled sneakies when my sister and brother were at school or church camp It was a sunny school day and for the life of me I cant remember what year it was or how old the brown paper lunch bag and a blanket to sit on Hand n hand we walked to a cushiony spot in the grass near the garden I wanted to help her spread the blanket but if youve ever let a child help you you understand why she gave me the job of just holding the brown paper bag We sat down and from the brown paper bag Mom pulled out two bologna sandwiches an ice cold slushy Coke in a bottle that had been in the freezer for about an hour and a banana Popsicle Im sure we prayed cause we always did And when I tell this story I always say must have blessed the banana Popsicle real good too cause I can stul taste The picnic wasnt planned We didnt nave fancy fixins We did nt have a proper picnic basket Nothin special Just some food Just a bag Just us Im not sure what we talked about but I remember I did all the talking And after I ate I ran around jumped and danced and got a whole afternoon of attention I talked and played so much that we almost forgot to eat the Popsicle It melted just enough that we didnt have much trouble break ing it down the middle to share it Ive searched in every grocers freezer and looked on every shelf but I cant find bananaPopsicles anymore If I could though they wouldnt be as good I didnt realize my mom remem bered that picnic until I was in col lege and we played the game similar to televisions Newlywed Game during a week end One question the asked was what will your daughter say is her favorite childhood memory Mom answered a picnic we had when she was little We had a banana won that round No other team even got a point It wasnt until I heard the other moms and daughters say they didnt even have any favorite childhood memories that I real ized how special our banana Pop sicle day really was My mom had a similar day with her father It was the last day she and her father spent together before she married and left her Appalachian home for the Hoosier state Her dad was planting potatoes and needed help None of her other nine siblings were willing Mom They packed a bologna sand wich lunch and headed to the field My grandpa sank two bot tles of Coke in a creek to chill She can still taste that bologna sandwich Over the years Ive thought a lot about our Popsicle picnic And I think Ive finally figured out why it was so special It wasnt until recently when although I was dogtired I kept my niece night and let my household chores go undone We blew enough soap bubbles to put Lawrence Welk to shame played hide and seek always hid ing behind the same tree carpeted the porch in sidewalk chalk picked dandelions had at least 30 tea parties and she swung on every swing and slid down every slide at Highland Park By Saturday night the little girl who almost outandout refuses to even go to sleep at night took a threehour nap We had a banana Popsicle day You see Mom could have cleaned the house She could have washed a load of laundry She could have mended a shirt She could have taken a nap Taken n long hot bath Taken me to a baby sitter But she didnt Instead Mom said Lets have a Mini Makeovers Call Today For An Appointment meRLEnoRmpn COSMETIC STUDIOS Kokomo Walmart Plaza HRS 108 Sat 105 4563252 Happy Mothers Day My mother was
