updates on Kokomo and Howard Countys Sesquicentennial Celebration Cast night is May 24 Anyone interested in perform ing in the historical pageant On the Banks of the to be presented July 59 should attend cast night at 7 May 24 at Maple Crest School auditorium About 400 people are needed The show will feature music dance drama and comedy There are no lines to learn costumes are pro vided and there is minimal rehearsal time There are no age limits and both individuals and groups are needed For more information call Cheryl Graham at 4576691 Businesses asked for windows Businesses are encouraged to make their windows available for displays of historical artifacts dur ing the Sesquicentennial Celebration Windows should be decorated by June 27 and remain until July 11 Displays may relate to years past to todays merchandise Blue ribbon awards will be made on June 30 in the following categories best merchandise best furniture best clothing best jew Saluting Our Past Celebrating Our Future elry most interesting most unique and window painting Store owners may decorate their windows themselves or they may donate space to be used by a com munity group to make a display Members of Kokomo Art Association have indicated an interest in window painting and store owners may volunteer win dows to that group To indicate interest in decorat ing windows or donating window space or for more information call Maryann Redmon or PJ Kirkendall at 4524314 Division plans special contest The ticket division of the Celebration is sponsoring a First Lady contest The First Lady will be crowned to reign over the Sesquicentennial Celebration week activities and six other women will be crowned as mem bers of her court This is not a beauty or talent contest Nominees must reside in Howard County be 18 to 108 years old single or married They will be selected from the results of their popularity organizational abili ties and active community involvement The First Lady and her court will be announced at the commu nitywide dance on July 2 Deadline for nominations is May 20 To nominate someone call the Sesquicentennial office at 4525711 and provide the persons name address and phone number or mail the information to Sesquicentennial Celebration Box 6550 Kokorno Irtd 46902 When someone is nominated the committee will contact her and invite her to a reception on May 25 At the reception the responsi bilities and awards of the contest will be discussed and individuals may decide to become actual par ticipants You may honor some one by nominating them yet it does not commit them to partici pate Final decision is up to the nominee Flower scheme is red and white The committee is asking resi dents to plant red and white flow ers at their homes for the tours business and factory open houses antique equipment displays and live entertainment July 8 Young and Young at Heart including pioneer home coming teen dance tournaments story telling square dance and pitchin dinner July 9 Arts and Armed Forces Recognition including art shows music festivals jet mili tary displays July 10 Festival of Faith including church homecomings communitywide service ice calendar Jones honored for service Jeff Jones a sophomore major ing in criminal justice at Indiana University Kokomo is the cam pus recipient of the 1994 Public Service Award from the Indiana Conference of Higher Education An officer for the Kokomo Police Department Jones received a plaque for his contributions to the rehabilitation of troubled youth in the area according to an IUK news release Jones is a member of the Police Athletic League an organization that works with atrisk children in an attempt to show them values He was nominated for the award by Ethel Swartzendrtiber an IUK English instructor IU President Thomas Ehrlich presented the award at a recent luncheon at the Ramada Inn Indianapolis where 18 other stu dent leaders from the Indiana col leges and universities were also honored The Indianapolis event was sponsored by Indiana Campus Compact a consortium of Indiana universities that works to encour age community service by stu dents Four earn first place INDIANAPOLIS Television production students from the Kokomo Area Career Center won eight awards including two for first place in a recent competition sponsored by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters In the corporate video division Randy Harrison Kelsey Hollis and Jeremy Miller took first place with their video about the career center The Power Kat produced by Harrison Hojlis and Emily Burke won first place as best high school newscast This years IASB competition was hosted by Indiana University Purdue UniversityIndianapolis Math awards go to Western UPLAND Ind Richie Taylor of Western High School near Russiaville was the grand prize winner at Taylor Universitys 22nd annual Mathematics Field Day recently The Western team was second overall in the event which aims to
