Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - May 8, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Sports Sunday May Kokomo Tribune C3 Another Kentucky Derby favorite falls short LOUISVILLE Ky AP Everything was right about the trip except the horse that made it Thoroughbred racing was on the lookout for a striking gray named Holy Bull to break from the gate Saturday at Churchill Downs run away from the strongest Kentucky Derby field in a decade and not slow down until he had plucked each of the Triple Crowns gems and given the game its next superstar Instead it was Go for Gin that went And went and went and went Showers that began late Friday night and continued until just about an hour before the race pounded the dirt oval until its color and complexion resembled runny mascara It was the kind of surface that Nick Zito Go For Gins trainer had spent the better part of a week praying for Sometimes the best horse dont win the big Zito said frac turing grammar as he had tradi tion by winning a second Derby in just three trips Its the best horse that day And he added was Go For Gins No one had to remind him why Tracks have a big part in rac ing A big part You cant put a dome over a racetrack and you cant tell Zito added not to let it The day before the Derby Zito stood outside Barn 42 in the early morning mist sheepishly provid ing a television interviewer with details of his second minor scrape with a rental car in only three vis its to Churchill Downs The moment the cameras quit rolling he turned to a nearby visi tor and cracked And if I ever come back Im going to ask for something to drive from the infantry division stationed near The visitor asked if the accidents had something to do with the rainslicked pavement Zito said Im like the horse Ive got no problems with an Even if thats true Zito still suf fers by comparison In five starts on off tracks Go For Gin has won three times and finished second in the two others Breaking from post position No 6 Saturday the slim bay colt veered to his right coming out of the gate and bumped into Tabasco Cat ft turned out to be his only misstep of the trip While everyone waited for Holy Bull the 21 favorite on the strength of seven wins in eight starts to assume the lead the big gray was nowhere to be found Holy Bull mysteriously stalled at the gate ceding the lead to Ulises He eventually Faded to 12th Jockey Chris McCarron aboard Go For Gin righted his mount and went after the leader in either case He was a halflength behind going into the first turn and trying to save some horse for a challenge that never materialized I tried to ease him back at the eighth pole and he would have nothing to do with McCarron said Nick told me he wanted him close My instructions were if no one else was in a position to press Holy Bull that I was to assume that But he was running so easy I thought to myself if hes galloping like this at the head of the lane McCarron added hes going to be hard to Impossible turned out to be more like it McCarron couldnt have known that at the time of course And so while he piloted Go For Gin down the middle of the final straight away the safest route on an off track he went to the whip a couple of times for good measure and even dared sneak a glance at the rail I just looked to the inside to see if anybody was making up he said I thought if anybody came inside Id pull my horse over to the rail and a kick a little mud in their That final indignity turned out to be unnecessary Strodes Creek the Charlie Whittinghamtrained colt who went unraced as a 2 yearold closed with a flourish but still finished two lengths back Similarly Blumin Affair the Jack Van Bergtrained colt lived up to his laterunning reputation by claiming third another three quarters of a length behind Mud died and badly beaten Holy Bull finished lengths back People will debate for years why Go For Gin appropriated the grays trip and his spot in the win ners circle But it was probably ordained when the skies opened up Friday night and remained that way until a few rays of sun shine pierced the clouds just about the time the Derby was history At about the same time Holy Bulls ownertrainer Jimmy Crpll caught up with his jockey Mike Smith heading for the paddock What happened Croll fairly shouted In the noise Smiths answer could not be heard But even as the two walked toward the pad dock workmen on a ladder mounted a name on the panel just under the roof where the name of the Derby champions are dis played It read simply Go For Gin There was no room for explanations about how it ended up there Litke is an Associated Press columnist who may be reached through the Kokomo Tribune sports Soxs McDowell back on track By The Associated Press Is Jack back Hes still got a ways to go but hes a lot closer than the last time Chicago White Sox manager Gene Lament said Saturday after McDowell got his first victory in nearly a month a 42 win over Kansas City That was more like Jack McDowell But it will get any better today than before but I didnt overthrow I had great command It was a matter of going back to what I used to do Thats throwing a lot of strikes instead of trying to make everything a perfect
