ANGELES AP A day after frantic 911 calls from Simpsons exwife were broadcast worldwide the citys top prosecu tor said he would impose a black out on the case and challenged news organizations to fight him It is time to cut it District Attorney Gil Garcetti said Thurs day I am now trying to put a lid on this from my Garcetti promised to reject any future requests for public records saying it would harm Simpsons shot at a fair trial Some critics claim Garcetti him self has contributed to the media feeding frenzy with frequent tele vised news conferences Garcetti appeared virtually nonstop on television throughout the week end after Simpsons arrest on murder charges Hes thinking more with his ego than his said Harland Braun a criminal defense lawyer who once worked with Garcetti in the district attorneys office You cant make political hay out of this tragedy its going to boomerang Its a sad sad case People dont like to see you gloating on televi sion about Simpson 46 has pleaded inno cent to the firstdegree murders of Nicole Brown Simpson 35 and her friend Ronald Goldman 25 He could face the death penalty if convicted A Los Angeles County grand jury was to convene again today A grand jury indictment would preclude a preliminary hearing which is scheduled June 30 and send the case straight to trial Investigators on Thursday also sealed affidavits for search war rants conducted after the killings Some media reports about evi dence such as a bloody ski mask found at Simpsons home and a bloodstained spade believed to be the murder weapon have turned out to be false But the flood of pretrial publici ty continued ABCTV and the Los Angeles Times reported that Simpson allegedly smashed a car wind shield with a baseball bat during an argument with Mrs Simpson shortly after they were married in 1985 I broke the windshield Its mine Theres no trouble Simpson said according to police Mrs Simpson declined to prose cute but the incident was cited in court in 1989 when Simpson pleaded no contest to battering his wife Shapiro Simpsons attor ney said only that Simpson struck his wifes car with an object Paula Barbieri a close friend of Simpsons who spoke to him by phone since his arrest told ABC TVs PrimeTime Live in an interview broadcast Thursday night that he denied committing the murders She said she believed him Hes not a violent said Barbieri Hes never ever hit Reports of the Simpsons turbu lent relationship escalated with the release of tapes of the 911 calls Mrs Simpson made on Oct 25 1993 She told police that her ex husband was raving and Simpson is heard shout ing and swearing in the back ground Garcetti said he was confident that we can find 12 jurors who know very little if anything about this Low fives Jarred Summers 15 gives low fives all sur prise headache to motorists attempting to travel Sycamore Street between Washington and Berkley Thursday The Indiana Department of Transportation announced in April road crews would be working on Ind 22 Sycamore Street in Kokomo to Ind 29 in Burlington this summer However they did not issue a warning Wednesday to let motorists know that one lane of Sycamore was to be closed Thursday According to the April news release during the road construction one lane will always be closed with a construction worker directing twoway traffic for the length of the project The timing of the Sycamore Street work creates a tremendous hitch as it is occurring just prior to the KokomoHoward County Sesquicentennial celebra tions Several events for the celebration July 19 will occur at the Howard County Museum 1200 W Sycamore St Roger Schmidt state transpiration engineer said he knew that a museum was located in the area but was unaware of the city and countys Sesquicenten nial celebrations There will be no work done during July 2 3 and 4 and during the weekends but during the week work will continue as normal except for weather delays I hope theyre going to be done said Kelly Thompson director of the museum and cochair of the KokomoHoward County Sesquicentennial Cqm mittee Schmidt plans to contact the repaying Johnson to determine when the stretch will be completed Street flooding prompts a flash flood warning Its been feast or famine lately for Howard County farmers wait ing on rain The inch and a half that fell quickly and in some areas violent ly Thursday prompted a flash flood warning for parts of the county Weather observer Robert Wise said the warning was issued after a ham radio operator report ed street flooding in RussiaviUe We needed the rain in a lot of areas of Howard County but again some places got more than they could use in a short amount of said Robert McCormick Howard County agricultural extension agent We did have corn rolling in places thats a sign of severe moisture stress before those rains came Thats an indication that we did have areas where we did need rain There was some flooding and damage to crops in the lower areas of fields McCormick said some fields received two inches of rainfall in a very short time McCormick noted he saw water standing in some corner areas of the fields on the way in to work this morning If there is some low land flooding this could cause some damage to crops Wise called for showers to end early this afternoon with skies becoming partly cloudy late ift the day and a nigh of 74 degrees Saturday
