Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - December 29, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Kokomo Ind Thursday I Dec 50 cents Weve held on a lot longer than the rest of em because of the service weve Eva Hutto owner of Hutto Drug Store reflects on 44 years of business in Kokomo KT photo by nm Bath Local business closes tonight Competition squeezes out Hutto Drug Store By JEFF PARROTT Tribune staff writer Belly up to the counter for a fla vored Coke Have your prescrip tion filled by someone whos been there as long as you can remem ber On your way out scoop up a hot bag of salted nuts Do it all at Hutto Drug Store 119 E Markland but do it quick ly The store having weathered the citys economic ups and downs since 1950 will close its doors for good tonight at 9 Hutto has stubbornly held on to its classic soda fountain and lunch counter along with its early 1960s decor But increased competition from corporate America especially large companies whove contract ed with large employers to fill pre scriptions through the mail has squeezed out Hutto Drug Store Of course I regret having to do said owner Eva Hutto who kept the business running after her husband Bob died 13 years ago But I wouldnt take anything for all the experiences weve had the friends weve made and all the loyal One of those Carole Krieg said she lives a few blocks away and will miss a place so close to buy medicine and other items Even more shell miss the Hutto family and the atmosphere of their store Its one of the few places you can get that hometown Krieg said At a lot of places you cant even get the people to look at you Eva has always emphasized Weve held on a lot longer than Hutto Drug Store as it stood in 1950 Kioto provtdwi the rest of em because of the ser vice weve Hutto said referring to various Kokomo inde pendent drug stores that have died over the years She recalled there being up to 15 at one point Bob always said we have no excuse to be in business if we cant give good service to our Hutto said she credits her stores longevity to employees who have stuck by her side and worked hard There are currently 12 employees including herself and her 49yearold son Phil the phar macist Phil is not sure what hell do for a living but hell likely continue as a pharmacist somewhere he said The stores inventory and approximately prescrip tion files have been sold to Revco a retail drugstore chain based in Twinsburg Ohio Hutto customers can access their files via computer from any area Hooks store said Revco spokesman Tom Kropf Revco bought out Hooks and will eventu ally convert all Hooks stores to Revcos Don Moore owner of Moores Rexall Drugs said hell miss the store despite the fact its closure will mean the elimination of a nearby competitor Moores store in business since 1955 site at 610 W Markland about five blocks west of Hutto Drug Store I hate to see them Moore said Bob Hutto opened that store back in 1950 and weve always been friendly competitors Its a shame a family company is being forced out of business that has helped so many people over the Hutto said her husband wouldnt be happy to see the end of the store they made the center of their lives But she pointed out he was always an advocate of change According to Hutto their store was the first in Kokomo to deliver prescriptions the first to boast a paved parking lot and the first to close on Sundays And this may be the first notice people receive that Hutto Drug Store is closing Hutto said shes wanted to keep it low profile until the contract with Revco was signed and in her hands which occurred less than two weeks ago While the store will be emptied of its contents on Friday someone will be on hand from Saturday to Jan 13 to collect accounts due from customers Mailorder firms hurt small stores By JEFF PARROTT Tribune staff writer Hutto Drug Store as it stands today KT by Todays closing of Hutto Drug Store marks the second time this year a local independent druggist has called it quits On Oct 7 Hynds Drug Store closed its doors at 431 W North St after SO years of business Don Moore owner of Moores Rexall Drugs and former presi dent of the National Association of Retail Druggists said small inde pendently owned drug stores such as Hynds and Huttos have folded largely because of an onslaught of competition from mailorder drug companies and chain drug stores Rite Aid RevcoHooks Wai greens and instore pharmacies operated by Cub Foods WalMart Kmart and Kroger are among those competing to fill prescrip tions locally Attempts to control costs by large employers such as General Motors that sign exclusive contracts with large chain phar macists and mailorder companies have also hurt smaller drug stores he said Moore said hes been able to off set sinking prescription sales with a diversified range of products In addition to filling prescrip tions Moores Rexall features a full line of inhome health care equipment sundries and cosmet ics Moore whos lobbied in Indi anapolis and Washington on behalf of small retail pharmacists now heads up the Community Pharmacists of Indiana Moore said his group will draft a bill in the upcoming Indiana Gen eral Assembly session that would prohibit pharmaceutical manufac turers from discriminatory pric ing selling to mailorder com panies at extremely lower prices than they do to independent phar macists He expects a tough battle from Eli Lilly he said Hutto Drug Store owner Eva Hutto cited the growth in mail order pharmaceutical companies as the blow that finished her store off Its not fair but its just one of those things thats Hutto said of lower prices large mail order companies can charge manufacturers because of the economies of scale they enjoy Phil Hutto Evas son and the stores pharmacist said the mail order companies use coercive tac tics such as threatening to close drug manufacturers out of the market in order to buy at lower prices He admitted theyre entitled to discounts if they buy in larger quantities but not to the degree theyre currently receiving GM withdrew an attempt earlier this year to exclude independent pharmacies from bidding on employee health plan contracts after a storm of public protest Nonetheless the ensuing low prices the independents were required to meet have minimized retail profits Eva Hutto said Chrysler considers other sites Major retooling possible here By DAVE PHILLIPS
