Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - December 4, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana KOKOMO Sunday I Zimmermans believe in We Care By JULIE McCLURE Tribune local area editor For the Zimmerman We Care weekend is a time to gather around the television set and have some serious all the while making a better Christmas for those less It all began 20 years ago when the family lived in Walton and couldnt watch the show on cable so they just listened and One of the first I bought a bag of peanuts and a and I told my brotherinlaw I needed some help getting them And when we got there it was in one We laughed over Junior We bid on stuff having no idea what it looked he The familys generosity toward We Care has astounded many who watch and work for the bene fit Last Zimmer man spent a record for the Hope doll We Cares symbol of Through the the Zimmermans have purchases such things as a a lot in tons of toys and tons of We Care But Hope has remained perhaps the most important purchase over the wars for the The very first time we got Hope the family has purchased her more than once I picked her up at WWKI and there was a woman there who had never seen Her son came over to me and asked me to take it over to the and she was an older lady she was sitting there and I let her hold Hope and she was Junior Zimmerman You dont forget something like During that first Carolyn Zimmerman grew very attached to the doll and through the her image has appeared through out the house in paintings and other We Care But they have never forgotten what the doll really stands for in the hearts of We Care Just think of how many people are getting help because of We Carolyn Zimmerman The people who work on this so hard the whole town works for Its just something we believe Some of that belief came from at one time worrying themselves where Christmas for their family would come We grew up basically poor Junior and now that we can thats what we When the call goes out each year from We Care for more the Zimmermans round up items at the businesses Z H Construc tion and Bullseye Boats This Z H with the help of several other companies including Armstrong Junior and Carolyn Zimmerman find much to give for We Care Tribune photo by Clint Keller ttf The money goes to what we think is the best cause in We believe in Junior Zimmerman Kokomo Lumber and is donating two complete valued at to That idea came to Zimmerman when he was listening to Dick Branson on Male Call say that more donations were needed for We Carolyns father was having a garage built and I We could build So I went to see Mike Robinson at Kokomo Lum ber and pretty soon I got to think we can make this How to make a bid Heres how to watch and bid for the WWKI We Care telethon this weekend Where to watch Telecable channel 35 Where to listen How to bid Call 4561100 12 operators on i ly or 800 444 WWKI When it began 6 Friday When it ends 5 today Who it benefits WWKIs We Care raises money which is divid ed among the Kokomo Rescue the Salvation Army and the Kokomo Tribunesponsored Goodfellows to help the needy at Questions WWKI He is quick to point out that many including Z H are donating labor and materials for this So were doing he But its all of these people together donating the materials and not just he This the Zimmermans will again gather around the television on We Care weekend and bid their hearts We sort of make it a party Carolyn Zim merman All the family is in the living room and last when we got we all Zimmermans nope businesses and individuals will be watching and bidding this The money goes to what we think is the best cause in Koko Junior Zimmerman We believe in Hope never really leaves We Care By JULIE McCLURE Tribune local area editor She arrived tumbling out of a bag of assorted donated items at the We Care office on a snowy night in Decem during an early year of the Without a word or she has raised since the first year that she was sold as a sort of afterthought when someone asked if she could be Her name is Since that the Hope doll has become the symbol of WWK Is We She adorns this years featured Christmas Memories and is on the cover of the 1995 We Care She is the centerpiece in front of Dick Bron son and Charlie Cropper during the weekend When asked what the doll has meant to the which raised a record in 1993 to help the We Care director Jan Buechler I cant put it into I remember rinding her one She just sort of fell out of that And she looked like what were all We Care volunteers glued on one of her eyes but in general left her as she The volunteers had her for more than one year before someone asked if he could bid on Prior to the We Care sign behind Bronson and Cropper was the last item to be It just happened by accident that we sold Buechler She really represents this communi tys hope for each and the gen erosity of this Jan Buechler We Care director WWKI We Cares Hope has raised thousands for the needy Tribune photo by Clint Keller Related story We Care heads into the home Page I dont think we ever had a chance to contemplate if she would come back be donated back the next year to be sold The idea of an individual buy ing Hope and then donating her back the next year began in 1986 and continuea with a break of only one year through In she was sold for In Hope was sold to Junior and Carolyn of Z H Construction and Bullseye Boats for a record The Zimmermans returned Hope to the We Care office Wednesday anticipating she will bring another large donation to the charity this Shes just like one of the Junior Zimmerman She seems to fit in my wifes Throughout the different people nave made the doll blan and The toys stay with her and were brought back with the doll for this years Hope took her place at the telethon desk Friday night in front of Bronson and Cropper and will be the last item sold And although she is sold every the We Care crew knows that the doll always remains with Mary Beattys original chalk drawing of Hope stays in the We Care Buechler Shes always here with and we look forward to when she will earn a place in the We Care she There isnt really a but there is the feeling Hope generates when she is brought back to the telethon each and when she is picked up by a or some times a She really represents this com munitys hope tor each and the generosity of this communi Buechler We all give what we Thats the way we see
