holocaust that led to the Nuremberg War crimes trials nor a witness but As a Young court reporter she used her 200 plus words minute verbatim shorthand skills to record history during the infamous medical trials of 194848 she often is asked to share her detailed memories during forums on the holocaust to remember its 11 million victims these were the scientists the Brilliant men who created the kill ing and torture said Spitz a Catholic the enormity of this evil the callousness and insensitivity demonstrated by these doctors is almost impossible to for me it was All there in their Spitz manages to keep her voice Calm and professional during most of her lectures about Nuremberg but she wavers when she describes accompanied by grim slides details of actual medical experiments the nazis were notorious for keeping precise records including films and closeup photographs one Frame every 10 or 15 seconds of people being killed in the name of science Spitz uses mild examples of these photos which leave Many in her audiences staring at their hands or dabbing at tears for the nazis the jews the gypsies the poles we were All no people we were said Judy Urman a holocaust survivor who attended a recent Spitz lecture in a Denver Syna Gogue it was like we were animals and subhumans these fanatical doctors must have kept telling themselves we do this for Germany for fatherland for Spitz now 65 was raised and educated in Illinois she reached the Pinnacle of her profession be tween 197282 when she was an official reporter of debates in the House and Senate before that she spent More than a de Cade As the certified reporter in Denver District court but it is her memories of Nuremberg that cause recurring nightmares the City was a bombed out Frozen ruin when she arrived in could have prepared her for what she saw and heard in the frigid courtrooms postwar shortages eliminated heat of the cites Palace of Justice six court reporters worked in 15minute shifts during the trial of the nazi doctors assisted by translators in All the Nuremberg War crimes trials produced pages of testimony for Spitz this work was a highly personal and shattering task because she is part doctors excused their actions by saying the involuntary subjects of brutal lab work already had been sentenced to death one nazi physician said it would have been a pity to waste such wonder Ful materials of incalculable Benefit to medical today Spitz is shaken when she hears similar arguments used to defend fetal tissue research and other controversial forms of med ical research we just cant
