Kingsport Times (Newspaper) - November 21, 1952, Kingsport, Tennessee2 Friday nov. 21, 1952 a thought for thanksgiving by Charles a. Wells we should remember that while at thanksgiving Many in the rest of the world will still hunger. In much of Europe and most of Asia a Bare sustenance is still the Rule. The boulevards of the european cities festooned to attract the foreign tourist usually disguise these conditions. But in a thousand villages beyond the boulevards you will find the hungry people. And it is not just capitalism that has Given us our abundance for such countries As Italy Spain Ger Many have had capitalism and free Enterprise for Cen Turies. The secret of our abundance is capitalism operated on principles of Christian sharing. This belief in Christian Shar ing deeply embedded in our traditions has produced High wages wide distribution of ownership and mass markets in contrast to the Low wages and restricted wealth of old Europe. Thus it is impossible to maintain our tradition if we fatten ourselves while the world we give to keep what we have. If we do not give then hunger envy and hatred will mount against us. But by giving and by teaching men the Christian Miracle of our own Economy we will bless the world. Marion p. Lane to speak sunday at holy Trinity the Rev. Marion p. Negro spirituals will be Fea tured and will include the gos Pel train and soon Well be done with the trouble of the believe Hydrogen super bomb will revolutionize a torn War concepts following is the second of three dispatches on the a bomb. By Joseph l. Myler Washington up the men who plugged it and those who helped bring it to pass believe the Hydrogen super bomb will revolutionize concepts of atomic War. But what role the a bomb actually will play in u. S. De sense and in what quantities and Sines it will be produced Are matters of High policy. The final decisions will be made by the new president Dwight d. Eisen Hower. They will be made Only after careful study of data from this month s a bomb explosions at eniwetok and from subsequent Hydrogen tests believed to be Al ready. In the planning stage. The a bomb revolution was kicked off before the world s military planners had completed adjustment to the a bomb Revo Lution. The a bomb which wrecked two cities in world War ii already has graduated into an entire family of weapons for tactical As Well As strategic use. All three armed services Are competing for atomic arms Aerial bombs guided missiles artillery warheads Torpe does and mines. The a bomb packs a mighty punch As the survivors of Hiro Shima and Nagasaki can testify. It is being made in sizes rang ing in int equivalence from under tons to nearly for reasons of physical Law to Day s biggest a bombs Are prob ably the biggest that can. Be made. But the a bomb with its a bomb trigger can in theory be made As violent As desired depending on How much tritium triple weight Hydrogen and deuterium double weight Hydrogen Are packed in. Tritium is the a bomb s primer. A Small amount of it ignited by the a bomb trigger sets off larger quantities of deuterium. An a bomb thus could be twice As powerful As its a bomb Detonator or 100 or times. As or. Edward u. Condon once Why say times More powerful Why not or the catch of course is in de livery. It would take the Queen Mary to transport a bomb As big As the giants mentioned by con Don. The Hydrogen device tested at eniwetok Early this month was probably not As big and probably not As Small As h bombs to come if the decision is made to produce the new weapon in Quantity. Such Quantity production. Would have to await completion of at least part of the a boat Plant being built near Aiken s. C. That won t be before late 1953.
