Kingsport Times (Newspaper) - January 14, 1953, Kingsport, TennesseeNewest Little store opens thursday i f on Sullivan St. The new Little store designed by William Hamilton Wallace popular Kingsport architect tops All the supermarkets in this area in size Beauty and completeness. Built of roman Brick and stucco the modern 151-foot wide building is dominated by a Story and a half aluminium Entrance on the left. The Entrance has an alumni num canopy concealed Down lighting in the canopy and is flanked on the left by a most attractive planting Box which at this season is filled with Ever greens Ivy and a Andenas. The aluminium Entrance doors Are opened by magic carpets which cause the doors to open when stepped on. The Entrance front is entirely of plate Glass. The length of the building is accentuated by an aluminium canopy above continuous plate Glass with a High roman Brick buckboard which gives full View of the Interior. I the Entrance mass is dominated by a colossal 50-foot High sign Pylon which at night is a Neon lighted Tower outlined by sparkling incandescent bulbs. The More than Square loot sales area of the Interior is lighted by continuous rows of fluorescent lights. I this excellently arranged Interior boasts exceptionally wide aisles Between the rows of shelves for the convenience of1 the shoppers. I Green and Gray tile flooring is used throughout and the colors of Primrose yellow Terra Cotta and Green and White predominate. A Beautiful Makion Mercer of Johnson City whose popular orchestra is Well known in this area will play the Hammond Organ Dur ing the opening Day of the new Little store. Bill Templin president of the air conditioning firm said the Little store management had elected to buy the Best air conditioning system on the Market. Worthington Templin said is the oldest largest company in the air conditioning business and this system installed in the Little store is equivalent to melt ing 5080 tons of ice per Day. The year round system uses duct fired Heaters for the heating Cycle and is completely automatic maintaining 74 de Grees of temperature and 50 per cent of relative humidity. The Little store s air conditioning system is one of the largest systems of its kind of any supermarket in the South tem Plin stated. A total of cubic feet of air per minute is distributed ducts while the temperature remains con Stant in any part of the shopping spaces. There Are five entrances to the lot. They also have Large rocked extra lot. The opening of the new store j climaxed 23 years of business for Kermit Young. Carl Young opened the first Little store in 1930 in Bristol and Kermit joined him shortly after Ward. The second Little store was opened in Bristol in 1932 and the first in Kingsport was established in 1934. The Little store was the first supermarket to open in this area and one of the first in the entire county. His first Job was wit a Well known Chain store in greens Boro Liere he was employed for two years before taking Over his duties As manager of another Chain store in Roanoke va., in 1938. He remained with the Roanoke store until March 1s42, when he came to Kingsport to open one of the larger nationally known Chain stores remaining with this store one year before enter ing the armed services. Slate served 16 months with the a s. Army and was Dis charged in september 1944. Following his discharge from the armed forces he returned to Roanoke where he was District manager of a Chain of stores for one year before returning to this area. He served As District Man Ager of the Bristol District and North Carolina districts of this nationally known Chain store until his present Job. He is married to the former miss Elsie Buck of Roanoke and the slates have one child mar Nee nine years old. Slate is a member of the Lions club in Danville va., and plans to move his membership Here shortly. He served As vice presi Dent and program chairman of the holy name society in Bris Tol. He is a member of St. Annes Catholic Church Bristol. When slate was in Kingsport before he was very Active in civic affairs. His hobbies Are fishing and Golf. The slate family now lives at 1108 Euclid Avenue in Bristol.
