Kannapolis Daily Independent (Newspaper) - November 14, 1989, Kannapolis, North Carolina Supporters of Darryl Hunt try to raise $50,000 Bond Only at jts2222 furniture outlet in Kannapolis associated press Winston Salem a supporters of a Man who has seen his two murder convictions overturned say they Are beginning to raise Money to get him out of jail after a judge agreed to set Bond. A Forsyth county Superior court judge set a $50,000 Bond for Darryl Hunt on monday raising the Prospect that he soon could be released from custody for the first time since he was arrested and charged with murder in september 1984. Hunt 24, of Winston Salem was convicted of first degree murder in june 1985 in the rape and stabbing death of Deborah b. Sykes of Mooresville a copy editor at a Winston Salem newspaper on aug. To 1984. In october 1987 he was convicted of second degree murder in the death of Arthur Lee Wilson 57, who was robbed and beaten sept. 17,1983. But both of those convictions have been overturned. On monday judge w. Steven Allen set Bond and appointed James e. Ferguson Iii of Charlotte and Adam Stein of Chapel Hill to represent Hunt in the two cases. Members of the Darryl Hunt defense committee said that they hoped to be Able to raise the Bond within a few Days. Quot i done to know How Long its going to take but we re working on it a said Larry d. Little a local lawyer and former Alderman. A a we be been working on it for five years. We Arentt going to Stop now. A Forsyth District attorney Warren Sparrow and Surry District attorney h. Dean Bowman had argued in a Bond hearing that Hunt was a threat to the Community a threat to flee and should be Given Bond As High As $300,000, if any. Hunt left the courtroom smiling after the hearing. Because Hunt has no Money of his own his supporters will have to raise $7,500 in Cash to secure Bond through a bonding company or put up $50,000 in property. A a we re elated that for the first time in five years Darryl Hunt will be Back on the streets of Winston Salem a said Khalid Abdul Rattan Griggs the minister of a local mosque who will permit Hunt to live at his Home if Bond is posted. If Hunt posts Bond Allen ordered that he must reside with Griggs and his family that he not be on the streets after la p.m., that he stay away from All prosecution witnesses in the two cases against him and that Griggs report any Bond violations or criminal activity to the police department. Hunt has been serving two life terms for the death of Wilson and the rape and fatal stabbing of mrs. Sykes a copy editor with the Sentinel a now defunct afternoon Winston Salem newspaper. In May the state supreme court overturned the Sykes conviction citing the improper admission of evidence during the trial. Last month the states High court let stand a court of appeals decision that overturned the Wilson conviction based on improper instructions Given to the jury. Bowman who is handling the Sykes Case because of a conflict in Sparrow s office that has prohibited him from pursuing the Case has declined to say if he will ask that the Sykes Case be retried. Sparrow has said he will retry the Wilson Case. On monday he told Allen he expects to again convict Hunt of second degree murder. Bowman said the possibility of flight concerned him. But he was More concerned he said about the safety of the residents of Forsyth county. A a we re not talking about one murder Here we re talking about two a he said. A a let a get Down to the Bottom line. In a concerned he a going to do it again. A Ferguson picked up a Green statute Book and paged through it As he responded. A a in be looked in vain for anything that says that a prosecutors concern is a Factor that can be considered in setting Bond a he said. He reminded the judge that neither conviction stood up on Appeal. A the was convicted illegally a he said glancing at the prosecutors. A and the prosecution now contends that because he was illegally and improperly convicted that should now be held against him. A earlier in the hearing Ferguson had pointed out that Bowman has repeatedly said publicly that he has not decided whether to prosecute Hunt a second time in the syke Scase. The hearing also settled the question of Hunts attorneys. Gordon w. Jenkins and s. Mark Rabil who were appointed to defend Hunt in the Sykes Case in 1984, technically were still his attorneys until monday. But Hunt and his supporters wanted Ferguson and Stein who represented Hunt in the Wilson Case appointed to represent Hunt in the Sykes Case too. Ferguson and Stein told Allen they were willing to accept an appointment to the Case. Allen allowed Jenkins and Babil to withdraw from the Sykes Case. Evelyn Jefferson mrs. Sykes Mother was in court for the hearing. She left without a comment telling court workers that she did not want to talk to reporters. A a we be been working on it for five years.
