Mayor posing Extension of recycling deadline by Susan Redden Globe City Hall writer local trash haulers May get a break on a City recycling deadline mayor Cheryl Dandridge said tuesday. Under current City mandates haulers would be required to Start residential recycling programs As of july 1, but the City Council next monday will consider a measure that would delay that deadline until nov. 1, mrs. Dandridge said. If approved the proposal would respond to one of two requests made on behalf of haulers at a May 21 Council meeting. Mrs. Dandridge said she knew of no change in the Council stance on the other request that the closing Date of the City Landfill be extended beyond the july 1 deadline announced earlier. The mayor was among the Council majority that in a 54 vote last monday endorsed the july 1 Landfill closing Date set last december. Quot there a no move afoot that i know of to change it and it would take one of us five to bring it Back up a she said referring to a provision in Council rules that allows a Council member who voted with the majority to bring a measure up for reconsideration at the next meeting. Council members at the session took no action on the haulers request for an Extension of the recycling deadline. Mrs. Dandridge said an Extension of recycling deadline would give time for a trash recycling Center at Galena kan., to be completed. Most haulers have indicated plans to use the Center where trash collected would be taken recyclable materials removed and the remainder taken to a Landfill. Approval would relieve haulers from having to implement interim recycling programs and would help residents who would prefer not to separate their trash for recycling she said. Gary Garvin of trash master disposal co., one of the businesses that had sought extensions in the City deadlines said tuesday he is pleased that the recycling deadline might be extended. Quot i think its great i Hope they vote for it a Garv in said of the proposal. ?1 Hope they would consider an Extension of the Landfill closure Date Garvin said he had written to a v Council members last week and included a copy of a news article in which Betty Magers a Landfill neighbor and frequent critic was quoted As saying that if she were on the Council she would have voted to extend the closure Date. A reference to pledges made to neighbors of the Landfill concerning the closure Date was made by councilman Earl Carr when he made a motion that the City not depart from the july 1 Date announced earlier. City staff also had recommended against a change in the deadline noting that work toward final grading and site elevations for drainage Are being geared toward the july 1 Date. The staff also warned that the City could get caught under More costly closure requirements in new Federal Landfill regulations to go into effect later this year. Mrs. Dandridge on tuesday said she favored the july 1 closing because leaving the site open longer would extend the potential liability for the City and Force a change in Landfill elevations that have been worked toward for the past several see Extension 8a Yeltsin wins soviet Republic presidency Moscow a populist reformer Boris n.
