vigorously protesting against the Bill passed by the legislature dividing the township and creating a new town ship out of the detached portion of the South with the exception o the people residing at the Bonnie Loca Tion the residents of the township Are practically unanimous in demanding the repeal of the Bill and will petition the legislature to secure its immediate repeal the settlers of the North Side say that they will not be materially Hurt by the setting off of the township their protest being founded upon the ground that neither the township Board nor the residents m general had any knowledge that division was imminent the South aiders say that the Crea Tion of the new township Means add tonal tax burdens for the residents of the town and their protest is loud and vigorous several mass meetings have been held and the matter has been Dis cussed by the people of the township and a decision has been reached to fight the Bill to the last ditch even though it is now a Law copies of the Bill were received Here monday it was passed by the Senate on feb 28 and approved by the governor on March 7 it is entitled Lan act to detach certain territory from the township of Ironwood in go Gebie county and to organize the township of Erwin in said county to provide for the division of the liabilities and assets of the present township of Ironwood and to provide for the division of the assets and liabilities of the township school District of said township of 1 provides that the new town ship shall consist of the following territory the Southeast Quarter of Section 13 the East half of Section 24 the East half of Section 25 fractional Section 34 Aud All of sections 35 and town 47 North of Range 47 West and township North of Runge 47 West the Terri tory above enumerated embraces about fifty sections of land equal to nearly Cue and one half geographical town ships the known Mineral lands inthe new township consist of the Bonnie mine operated by the Newport mining and the Quarter Section on Section 13 which is unexplored but under Tion to the Oliver Iron mining co the Bill provides that the first annual meeting of the new township shall be held on the first monday of april 1907 at the Bonnie schoolhouse and names Axel Holmgren Eric Matson and an Drew Anderson As members of the boards of registration and election the Bill further provides that the As sets and liabilities of whatever nature and character belonging to the town ship of Ironwood shall be divided be tween that township and the new town ship in proportion to the assessed valuation of the property in each township As set Forth in the assessment Roll thereof for 1906 a division of the school property is also provided for the school houses and school Sites to remain the property of the townships in which the same were situated when the act took effect a division of school moneys remaining in the Treasury is to be made in proportion to the number of children of school age residing in each township As shown by the last school census Street Laura Bowden is nominated delegates were present from every Ward and township in the county at the Republican county convention held last monday at Bessemer to nominate a candidate for county commissioner of schools c m Humphrey of Iron Wood was chairman of the convention and e r Bayliss of Bessemer Secre tary the preliminaries were quickly disposed of and the delegates proceeded to ballot for their Choice the name of John Robinson of Bessemer was presented by a d Johnston miss i citizens caucuses and convention called to nominate City and Ward candidates a citizens convention to nominate candidates for mayor City clerk Atid treasurer will be held at the oily Hall on saturday March m caucuses of the citizens party to nominate Candi dates for Ward Oil Iees and to elect Dele Gates to the City convention will be held thursday evening March 21 there is very Littie political talk in the City and it is not Likely that mayor d e Suth Erland will be opposed for reelection it having been announced a few Days ago that or Sutherland would make the run again Jacob Nelson who has served As City clerk during the past two years is a candidate for rhe nomination for City treasurer and we d Snyder who has held the treasure ship for two years is out after the City clerkship the news record has heard of no opposition to either of these candidates a few Ward contests May develop As in former years although the news Llee Ord understands that practically All of the retiring supervisors and aldermen will seek re election d p Foley Wao has served As chief of police for several years has announced his intention to retire from the police Force on May 1st chief poles decision will undoubtedly necessitate some changes among the present appointive officers the Call for the citizens convention and caucuses follows citizens City convention a Delegate convention of the Citi Zens party of the of Ironwood Michigan will be held in the Council Chambers in the City Hall on saturday March for the purpose of placing in nomination candidates for the various City of Iees to be voted for at he regular City election to be held monday april As follows one mayor one City clerk one City treasurer also for the purpose of electing a chairman and Secretary of the citizens pity committee for the ensuing year and for the transaction of such other business As May properly come before he convention representation in said convention mall be by order of the citizens City convention one Delegate for every Lifty otes or
