agent Oft co Throe doors from 1ostoffice Holzhey to be freed notorious go Gebic Bandit has life sen tence commuted by gov Warner Raymond Holzhey the most notorious of go Gebic county lifers at the state prison at Marquette received a new tears present from governor Fred m Warner in the form of a commutation of his sentence to forty years the press dispatches stated that Holzhey had also been paroled by the governor but this is untrue this Means that Holzhey will not be immediately released but it is believed that he will be paroled without much further delay As he is eligible for release As soon As the Board of pardons acts in his ease As influential people have been trying to have Holzhey pardoned for a dozen years it is Likely that the parole will shortly be granted it is worthy of note that none of the persons who had to do with Holzhey arrest de Tention and conviction or so far As we know any other resident of go Gebic county appealed by letter or petition or in person to have Holzhey either pardoned or paroled at the adolescent age of Twenty three Holzhey started on a career of House Highway stage and train Rob Bery terrorizing All of Northern wis Consin and upper Michigan during the Spring and summer of 1889 he made the mistake of changing the scene of his operations to Michigan holding up the go Gebic Lake stage Between the Lake and go Gebic station on August 25 1839 and shooting and killing a e Fleishbein of Belleville and wounding another occupant of the stage then Holzhey rifled Fleishbein pockets and disappeared in the Woods being captured five Days later at Republic Holzhey was tried at Bessemer for killing Fleishbein found guilty in november and sentenced to life imprisonment at mar Quette judge Williams of Hough ton presided in the circuit court Charles m Howell now of Philadel phia being the prosecuting attorney d f Foley Sherill and John Kyan under sheriff six months after Holzhey arrived at Marquette still being in the adolescent state he seized one of the convicts and held a knife at his Throat threatening to kill him if anyone interfered Warden Tompkins shot the knife out of Holzhey hand with a Rille the Bandit losing four fingers then Holzhey was sent to the prison at Ionia and while there according to the newspaper accounts he was operated on and a Bone that had been pressing on his brain was later he was sent Back to Marquette became a Model prisoner and educated himself of course the Story about a Bone that had been pressing on loll Theys brain is purest fiction but it will do As Well As any other in the Frame up of the excuse for loll Theys liberation loll Theys statement of course while governor Warners kindly act of commuting my sentence and Parolino me has not been quite unexpected still i had built no great expectations upon the possibility of my release to one in my situation building castles in the air is a rather unhealthy occupation they Are so prone to come crashing Down about ones ears so i gave up that practice years ago making up my mind to meet both Good and evil Fortune with equanimity without the slightest desire for it much notoriety has come my Way in the past and the things said and written about me were usually a cur ious mixture of fact and fancy he cause my Case had somewhat unusual and Peculiar features about it All sorts of constructions were placed up on it and me to explain the Why and Why fore of my actions but never the right one for that was far too simple and obvious i was pictured As a bold bad Man a would be dime novel hero and what not but the Bald truth at the Root of my troubles was merely a physical nervous breakdown at the critical age of adolescence a depressed and highly morbid state of mind with the will temporarily under the Sway of abnormal ideas and notions leading for the time being to actions which were wholly at variance with my Normal self before and since of course Justice As yet is not trained to see underlying causes and motives it takes the evil deed and ascribes the most sinister motive which will Best Aid conviction and let it go at that i was not in a condition then to explain matters having but a confused realization of the facts my self and moreover even if properly set Forth my explanation would have met with nothing but ridicule As a disingenuous device to escape punish ment Twenty one years have passed away since then and it is Gratifying to note that at last the world has come to the conclusion that crime is often the result of causes and conditions of which the transgressor him self is the victim and that on the whole his Reform and redemption is better than the vengeful punishment and retaliation of the supposed Good old times which too often managed to transform the Chance offender in to a habitual and vindictive As to myself i have been treated with the utmost fairness during the last four administrations which cover the last Twenty years i have been the prison librarian and photographer for about seventeen years practically since the inception of those departments As to the future i have not Given it much thought but shall take up whatever comes to hand to make a living i am profoundly grateful to governor Warner for his clemency in my Case As Well As to Warden Russell and the gentlemen who interested themselves in my Case the very least i can do on my part to show my appreciation of their kindness is to live the remainder of my Days an up right and honorable life in the Active world to which the clemency of the governor has restored me Raymond Bamfield Isitt in yet delay in
