Quot we would like persons once for All to know that the people cannot be made the medium through which they can vent their spite and defame their neighbors. We want no communications of this character. Bear this in mind everybody Modoc your items Are n. G. We want none of the if the depositors Ever realize anything like their deposits although All connected with the defunct Bank Are Quot honorable Quot men and some of them Worth their thousands upon thousands. But they cannot be made to disgorge and it seems Are not responsible for the by Stag of the Bank. They Only loaned to it their honorable names and thus deceived the poor people who deposited in the Bank for they naturally thought a Bank thus backed could never burst. We suppose the depositors Are at the mercy of John w. Ray s Sweet will. If there is anything left after he is paid for closing up the Bank they May get a trifle. If everything is swallowed in Quot settling up Quot Why they can Only mourn As those without Hope. We should have More stringent Laws to regulate savings Banks and any one at All connected therewith should be held personally responsible for the deposits for As a general thing Only the poor and those in moderate circumstances patronize these institutions. The Case of Charles t. Mayo for embezzling the funds of the second National Bank of Lafayette is now on in the United states court. One would think from the following letter which was admitted in evidence t in other Day that there was t much to try and yet the deft Jdant is endeavouring to make a vigorous defense Lafayette ind., november 27,1877. In addition to these amounts there is due at Park Bank on the 28th inst., a draft acceptance waived drawn on National Bank of redemption. This was discounted by the Park seemingly for account and use of second National Bank but in fact for my own use. There is another such draft for 85,000 due on the 8th december these drafts were drawn by me As cashier with order As Cashiers to charge our account at maturity otherwise provided for. These draft Are secured by notes of Levi Moorehouse 87,880, due january 1st, and Owen Ball amp co. Due 22nd december. These notes nominally belong to me. There will be occasions for me to give a cause for my conduct and heavy Deal cation. I must have been mad to have borrowed Money to loan again but i found it easy to borrow and took no thought of my payments. The unsettled state of finances this fall unsettled my plans. Everybody wanted their Money. As my notes became due and i could not pay i used the funds of the Bank hoping to make Loans elsewhere to replace. In the fall or.
