In behalf a particular party a police Force can make itself a Power in the land but As citizens generally pay taxes that go to support a police Force it stands to reason that politics should have nothing to do with its appointment. We hardly suppose there is a Democrat the Force to Day for the simple reason that the City is in the hands the republicans and republicans fully appreciate the value policemen about election times. All the talk against a metropolitan police Force is the Meriest clap trap. The journal knows As Well As cit1z9ns generally that wherever a metropolitan police Force has been introduced better policemen and better police regulations have been inaugurated. Instead one party having things All their own Way the citizens have some Chance to say who shall be policemen. The Board is not composed All republicans All democrats while the mayor As a general thing has a voice in their selection and the mayor a City when he holds court As in this City is better Able to Tell the character and efficiency a policeman than Are the Trio who Are styled a police boards for he comes in Contact with them every Day while it is fair to presume that if either the three gentlemen comprising our police Board should Chance to stumble Over a policeman he would t be Able to Call his name Des Ignate his beat. Under a metropolitan police Bill if the commissioners Lare honorable and honest men the rights the citizens and not party would be looked after. The commissioners themselves would be selected from own citizens and be responsible for the conduct the police. The Only difference would be that they would not All belong to the same party As does the present Board. To be consistent the journal should object to the Oon Noil s Board All being from one and the same party knowing As it does that the police Force under the present regime is composed members the political party which chances to control the City. There is Only one really sensible question connected with this entire affair and that is.
