In the people s columns As Long ago As the Early Spring of 1877, Public attention was called to the genteel robbery of the people by the ring or rings of corruption lists acting about the construction of the new two million Dollar court House. The Public were told that As originally contracted for that edifice was to Cost Only $685,000, while the people of Marion county had to pay As much As or More than a million and a half dollars for that Structure. A stupendous fraud has been practice upon a lethargic trustful Public. They had been basely betrayed and systematically robbed and were virtually helpless. There seemed no remedy no method by which outraged Justice could enforce restitution or punish her betrayers. A solemn contract had been entered into by the guardians of the county the commissioners with architect Hodgson whereby he agreed to superintend the erection of the court House for the compensation of 5 per cent on the estimated Cost that is 5 per cent on $685,-225. That compensation would then be $34,-261 30. Supposing that he devoted the entire time of five years to that work the compensation according to the contract would have been almost $7,000 per year which in these times of Low wages would be regarded by most any professional Man of Indianapolis As a prosperous income. This $34,261 30 was drawn by Hodgson and a Little Plum of ,175 extra Quot for five per cent on plans of the furniture Fence boiler House and other internal and external fixing Quot Auxin Liary to that wonderful and extraordinary edifice. Thus the Sura total gobbled by architect Hodgson is $42,436 30�?a snug Little Fortune. But with massive Cheek and resplendent brazenness our Able architect in Defiance of the contracts of 1870 and 1872, whereby he agreed to accept 5 per cent of $685,206 As full compensation demanded $34,000 More. This Large sum was demanded As 5 per cent on additional expenditures in the erection of the court House or on an excess of nearly $600,000 Over the estimated Cost of the building. This Brassy demand was Quot set upon Quot by judge Elliott and a burdened groaning Public owe him a debt of gratitude for his Brave Independence and for applying equity to the Protection of the people.
