Free you must sweep forever out of the human mind that infinite despot. The Only Way to assert our absolute Freedom is to rely upon science which Only gives us knowledge. In order to be absolutely free we must look at All sides of nature. I Wierm that if a Man studies nature to prove a certain theory alien he is bound. You must not have preconceived idea. What Darwin and every scientific Man wants Are facts. If you want to come to the study of facts you must come to the question without Bias. You must submit yourself to the facts and examine both sides of the Jues Tion. If it u Don t then your i Aioli is the Faith of the Katholi i the protestant and the theist. A Man might have a keen brain and not a Large heart. He must have the democratic principle of action to show his humanity. A Man might be a reformer and not a Freethinker. The realm of Reform does not cover the realm of free thought. The Christian will Tell you he is a Freethinker but Are they philosophical and scientific free thinkers what is a genuine free thinker we do not talk of Liberty As being Liberty from Law. When we speak of Freedom of thought we do not mean that we can come to conclusion we ish but we admit the absolute Laws of nature. We must see with our intellect the beauties and wonders of nature in order to Nide stand Theca. He is not a True Freethinker Avha will not take into consideration the facts of nature. To see the truth we must come into Contact with this living world and then we will have a realm of fact to work in. We must not shut our eyes Ami dream out a bean Tinl Ideal. When we claim Liberty we claim no Liberty from it reality. There is a world of spirits around us and if they get communication with them they accept every thing they say As True. This is not True spiritualism. The spirits Are As Apt to be mistaken As we Are. We know just As much about the philosophy of the question As they do. If there is the spiritualistic world about it let us accept it in reason. I will accept nothing that comes from the world of spirits simply because it comes from the world of spirits More than would i accept the Pope or anything else. If there Are these worlds of spirits then they should join with me in contributing to human welfare. The final arbiter to the Freethinker is his own thought and i that is what we want in Reform. A Man might be a Freethinker but not i contribute to Reform. We j must have the combination be free in brain and generous in it Ciuci a pies. If one accepts the Pope s infallibility he gives his own brains away and accepts the Popes and has no right to claim to be a free thinker As he has committed intellectual suicide. In the Case of the orthodox Christian the Moroni he gives jigs mind up to the Bible he is riveted to it and can t go beyond it and the fact re free thought. None of the old institutions Are committed to Reform we must Reform it altogether. With this new scientific Conception the new re Forai must come. This world is heaving and throbbing to Day. I believe in Reu Olu Tion and the Only Vay we can have the True revolution is by just having absolute free thought. Abie mule Story a mule Story is t old by a. Vil Giaui a. He May be free in his thoughts until he accepts the Bible but the iii meet he accepts it he becomes a slave to it. When a Man has accepted the belief in an infinite god How can he believe in human Freedom. The logical result then is that god acts in us and does everything for us. If you wish to maintain Paunan Freedom pulled him round and Gall Opeil Back to the fort. The next morning it was ascertained that at a Point scarcely a Hundred Yards in Advance of where the mule had gained his Victory some Apache Indiana had ambushed the Road and but for the brute s keen nose and ears and Romness in resisting an obstinate Man Short work would have been made of both. I am devoting most of my spare time to Reading buckle s history of English civilization a look that will Well pay anybody to Quot tidy carefully. In am glad to see advertised in Ili the ironclad age of May 10th, a Normal school at Liberal mo., under the supervision of w. E. Grayson. This is the Opportunity Foi liberals to Send their boys and girls to school where superstition Don t hold the reins of government and where school will not be opened by a Pray n to an imaginary god above to iii Clouds. 1 wish every Rea or of the ironclad age could read Herbert Spencer s article Oji Quot the coming slavery Quot in the Populu science monthly for april. It contains More Good sound sense than is generally put into an article of its length. I am Only sorry Liat the truth seeker should be actively engaged in severely criticising it. If prof. Youman s did take up a collection to the amount of $5,000 for the purpose of enabling or. Spencer to publish certain of his works that has nothing to do with the crying evil of taxing Industry to support idleness. Of course i believe it is right for government to feed its fatherless and pension its protectors that it is just and proper for us to amply provide for the fatherless the Gray haired the widows and the helpless and i Don t think that Spencer Haas id Onajo a Agai be that Hie has Only criticised the growing tendency to verge Protection into socialism and it is certainly wrong to tax Industry to support Idle Vagabond ism. I Havn t Access to statistics but suppose the state of Indiana pays the poor through the township trustees a sum the enormity of which would be utterly surprising. Hanover township Shelby county a township less than six Miles Square and which polls about 450 votes pays from s1200 to $1400 to the poor through the trustee every year. Now supposing there Are eleven Toad ships to the county and that Hanover pays a double portion which is in idly possible for it has a Republican majority of 75indiana would pay ,000 a year to the poor through her township trustees and Over half of it to people Olio would be Asli amed to let their neighbors know they Are being helped by the county. I say it is a shame and it is a disgrace to tax this or other county to support Lazy Vagabond zen who Are Able bodied enough to get up families of from five to ten children. Whenever a Man becomes an object of Public pity 1 say Stop him from increasing his family and make the matter known except in a few extreme cases. I think if this course were pursued it would diminish pauperism at least one half. Spencer was not criticising the course of our township trustees but he was criticising a system which when pushed to the extreme is equally pernicious. I Don t want to be classed among those who Are criticising Spencer for declaring against a High tax to support a lot of Public paupers. Nor Avold i be found denouncing the Hii mane institutions or pensions for disabled soldiers asylums for the insane Potter houses for the poor and asylums for the deaf the dumb and the Blind. I Don t like to pay for raising children not my own and think some turn should be taken for striking the Happy mean. A. W. Swain. Grecian Stone cutting. American a relic text. An interesting observation has recently been made upon the methods of Stone cutting employed by the ancient greeks. Every one knows that the Marble blocks of which the grecian Mas jury is com posed Are put together without mortar and so nicely fitted that in Many instances two adjacent stones have As it were in non together by the cohesion of their particles brought into almost absolute Contact a fracture made by a blow upon one passing i directly into the other just As if the two formed a single Block. With regard to the fitting of the Drums of columns or. Penrose the most scientific and practical of All investigators of greek architecture believes that the desired effect of close fitting was obtained by inserting a wooden pin As a Pivot in the Drill holes which Are always found in the centers of the Drums and revolving each drum upon the one below it first placing Sand Between the stones until a perfect joint i was obtained in the same manner i that Glass stoppers Are ground i into bottles and pieces of Metal i work of certain kinds fitted to each other. This explanation which is probably the True one solves i the problem completely so far As the Drums of column Are concerned but throws no Light upon the fitting of the other stones of the grecian buildings such As the blocks of the entablature which a a of quid Ito have joints or do sir of the of Quot the columns the edges of each Block for a certain distance Back from the face being polished while the rest of the joint is slightly sunk in order to allow the polished portions to be brought into Perfet Contact. As no sign of a Pivot can be discovered on the stones even if it were possible to revolve them in Contact with each other it is Plain that a different process must have been used for fitting them and an inscription discovered a few years ago gives us some idea of what the process May have been. This inscription which seems to have been a sort of official document answering the purpose which now would be fulfilled by a printed specification describes the construction of a Temple and stipulates particularly that the joints of every Block of Marble must be polished with a mixture of Oil and Vermilion. As Vermilion if the word so translated really refers to the pigment now known under that name has no polishing Quality it has been suggested that the color was used simply to spread Over the joints before trying the stones together. If inequality existed in the surface of either Stone it would be immediately shown on separating the stones after a momentary Contact by the Transfer of color from one to the other and the protuberant portion thus detected could then be rubbed Down by hand to a uniform plane with the rest of the surface. A powder of red Chalk is often used by Marble cutters for a similar purpose and it is quite possible this May have been the Only use of the Vermillion paint but there is some difficulty in accounting on Liis theory for the mixing of Oil with the paint which if used dry would be quite As useful for its supposed purpose and would be much More easily cleaned off the Stone. There is no serious improbability in the supposition that the authors of the inscription May have confounded the True Vermilion with the red oxide of Iron of Crocus which is a very efficient polishing agent and if mixed with Oil and applied to the surface of a piece of Marble would serve admirably both to show where that surface had been brought to coincide with a test plane and to reduce the inequalities which might on trial be found to exist
