Two years of its life were spent at Rock Ford Twenty four at Seymour and the last two in Indianapolis. It a still heading for the Haven of rest with enormous steam pressure and a consignment of several thousand precious souls. Still there is ample room on Board for More through passengers. To All these peace and rest at the end of the journey Are positively guaranteed. Seymour ind., has been making considerable clamor about fair grounds and the bringing of manufacturing enterprises from Aurora and Jeffersonville. But this clamor has merged itself into a demand for the building of another Church. The Church will be built the other enterprises will be left. Religious rivalry and the glory of god demand the Church while there is nothing but the earthly interests of the Community demanding the fair and factories. If religion could bring about the supremacy of love Over hate it would be Worth having but the records of history forbid the Hope that the religious senti ment will Ever reclaim the race from cruelty from the passions of hate and jealousy and revenge and from War. If god is love if the essence of religion were love and it was Universal there could be no hate no cruelty no persecution but in countries were the Christian religion most prevails do All the evil passions of the heart most abound. We must therefore look to something better than religion to bring the millennium of Universal Harmony and love and peace. March 12th the lying Telegraph attack cd a most honorable and spotless evangelist. Rev. Brother a. M. Roper by name Good brother Roper s Zeal for souls led him to Mansfield Ohio. There he should have lodged with brother and sister Hettinger. Sister Hettinger should have been revived very much by the reverend revivalist. And the ghost and things so enthused her that in the delirium of her exaltation she ran Oft with the minister this incredible Story the Telegraph a mean enough to scatter Over the land to the shame and disgrace of the gospel of our lord and Savior. Brother Hettinger who under the circumstances cannot be an unprejudiced witness says he had his sushi cims aroused while the evangel was lodging at his House but until the Good sister loped he did t dream that he would have to surrender her entirely to the lord. Good Rev. Brother evangel Roper has a wife in Fairmount but what is a wife at Home to a Good Man out in Pursuit of precious souls ? the disembodied spirit. Orthodoxy teaches us that there is future existence for the soul which it defines As a disembodied spirit still re Taining the semblance of the body that has perished. The substance composing this soul is not described. We have no information As to its Means of support. How it walks runs or flies we Are not told. Whether it feeds or what it feeds on if it does whether it sleeps or is always awake whether it is stationary or is moving about in space whether it can see without eyes Bear without ears or think without brains these and other vexatious questions Rise up to perplex the mind nor is there any satisfactory information from the soul physician who it would seem ought to be Able to solve these problems. Puzzling too is it to understand How the disembodied soul can rest comfortably either in the atmosphere surrounding our planet or in the thin cold space beyond it. And Assum ing that its abode is upon some other planet either hot or cold according As the beliefs were orthodox or the reverse while in the Bod even then another insuperable difficulty arises. The other planets Are so Distant from ours that it would require an incalculable length of time for the disembodied spirit to reach its destination. If the abode of disembodied souls is upon other planets the interstellar space must be full of souls in transit like migratory Birds for their future abode. And As the journey is one that would require Many thousands of years even if the soul were propelled with the velocity of a Ball from the Cannon s Mouth if the judgement Day were now called no soul that has departed since the Dawn of supernatural religion would be in time to be judged Quot letting there Eli Quot is the grand difficulty in the theory that Paradise and the other place Are located on Distant planets. We Are driven from that position to seek nearer Home for the abode of the disembodied soul. It must ride upon the Clouds if saved or in some Way seek the Center of the Earth which is said to be in a state of molten heat if lost. Riding upon the Clouds in bad weather at least would not be much of a heaven. There seems to be no place where the disembodied soul can be at All comfortable. Theology is sadly indefinite in its descriptive land Marks. It gives us glowing descriptions of Quot that Happy Happy land Quot of the new Jerusalem of Gold paved streets but it does t locate the country it fails to give us the Quot Lay of the viewed in any Light this disembodied soul theory encounters insurmountable difficulties. By no Means the least difficulty the immaterial and bodiless soul would encounter would be that of maintaining its identity its individuality. From the incalculable number of souls that have been Quot disembodied Quot since Quot the beginning Quot on this theory it is reasonable to assume that our atmosphere and the apace for Miles about and beyond it Are packed full of souls. These souls must be so closely compressed As to form a homogeneous mass in which even the almighty would fail to identify any particular soul. The closer we investigate this theological theory of disembodied souls the farther Are we away from confirmatory facts to sustain it. Indeed rigid analysis seem hazardous As it places the Christian and the spiritualist together in a Hole. Us ont demand foe the whip pm Post. Beading Pennsylvania has been torn up by Angels. A 14 year old girl named Himmelrich was frightened into religion and spasms. The child was baptized in ice water and went off into delirious mania. She babbled about the Bible the prophets and the Angels repeating the jargon of the revivalists. She went to heaven and saw the Gold paved streets. She saw Jesus All this silly stuff the associated press telegraphs the whipping Post is badly needed for these evangelizing scoundrels who Are exciting children and weak minded people and driving them to mad houses for the pub lie to support. Every Man who Calls himself an evangelist ought to be Given thirty nine lashes on the Bare Back. The Strong Arm of the Law should strike Down the propagators of delusions. Anything that weakens the reason is detrimental to individuals and to society. A Large majority of people carry Heads out of proportion. A level head is rare. Most people have weak Points. Awe of the marvelous has been transmitted to us through the centuries. Such Harr Angnes As excite fears and weaken reason ate stabs at human happiness and the peace of society. We want discourses that dispel fear and strengthen the reason. The Quot evangelist Quot is an enemy of society. He is a driveline idiot or a shrewd scoundrel and in either Case he should be sup it issued. A Calm and quiet discourse upon what is called religion and the claims it has upon society for support even weak minded people can listen to without losing their wits but the spasmodic Monkey who Calls himself a revivalist should no longer receive countenance by the people who have to support pers and insane asylums. Here is the dispatch which we print to show the vile trucking of the Telegraph managers to the fraud called religion. The transmission of such Quot rot Quot Over the wires is the strongest argument yet presented Why the government should seize the Telegraph lines and conduct them in the interest of legitimate news and a secular government Reading pa., March 23.?Nellie Himmelrich a pretty dark haired girl of fourteen is now lying in a Semi conscious divine unpleasantness. It is with the most profound regret that we Are compelled to notice an unfortunate unpleasantness existing amongst the elect in Seymour ind. The presbyterian and methodist Brethren Are both these congregations have induced the ungodly to build pm costly churches of late to the glory of god. But they Are not Happy. God must feel proud when he looks Down upon those Fine churches but the wrangling of his children grieves him. A correspondent writing from Seymour March 17, says Quot the Sisters Are fussing in the methodist and presbyterian churches. The whole choir busted up in the methodist Church yesterday there was t a female voice in the choir they All took their seats in the audience. Brothers Mains Hodapp and Tevis had to do the singing the girls All got mad because the sister who led the choir had made arrangements for choir meetings every week several weeks appointed the time and they would All go and wait and wait for her and she neither would go or Send word she could not go and they got mad and tired of it and now the choir is Quot busted Quot with no one left but herself. They Are having a big time. They All hate the sister Leader because she does not keep her promises As christians ought to. And the sanctimonious presbyterian Sisters Are fussing because some of their Sisters have been dancing this Winter. Rev. Brother Trimble is not opposed to dancing but a few sanctified Sisters such As sister Edwards Are going to see that the rules of the Church Are enforced they have to quit dancing or get out of the Church. Of How harmoniously these Happy Sisters do live a lying tatti Injo slandering worse than we heathens for we Are Happy. The presbyterians Are talking about the methodist fussing the methodist about the presbyterian fuss. All this grieves me for i Don t think people who profess to be perfect christians should i was. I think they ought to live in peace and Harmony and love each other As we heathens do. Condition at the residence of Fredrick Reinhold of 923 North sixth Street this City. Her limbs Are perfectly rigid and she has at times the semblance of death. At intervals when her mind is sufficiently rational to enable her to speak Inteli legibly she gives vivid pictures of heaven and the appearance of the Angels. Since her baptism last sunday in the in water of the Schuylkill River the girl has Laboured under intense religious excitement resulting in this terrible coma. Rev. Musselman of the evangelical mennonite Church to girl s pastor is in constant attendance at her bedside. He said to Day Quot i have no doubt Nellie is in exactly the same condition As was st. John the evangelist when he witnessed the wonders of the other world described in the Book of revelations. It is Given to but few people to behold such manifestations and i believe that Little Nellie is divinely favored. She is now having a glimpse of the great beyond so that when her spirit returns to Earth she May Tell me and her other friends that which awaits us All. In one of her Lucid intervals the Young girl said to me i a pee Jesus and Many Beautiful Angels. I Don t want to come Back to Earth. The Angels have crowns of lilies and stars on their Heads and Trum to of Silver in their hands. The music is grand and the streets Are All paved with the girl has never been familiar with the scriptures but she now relates Many biblical fact that she never knew before and shows startling Familiari ties with the prophecies of the old testament and their wonderful word painting. The language she now uses is far above any Ever heard from her lips before. Great numbers of people come to the House daily and the Wounder is Reading through the surrounding country. Spasmodic Bali Ion. The general understanding of religion a that it is something you catch As you do the measles and the Small pox. Under the frantic be stipulations threatening and pleadings of the evangel the holy ghost a attracted to the spot. This ghost proceeds to strike contrition into a hearts of the multitude whose souls Are in imminent peril. The evangel becomes More and More vociferous and some sorrowful singing a added to the torrent of his vehement utterance. This occasions a More copious pouring out of the ghost and Here and there a stubborn sinner begins to yield. The evangel now redouble his efforts be stimulates More wildly liberates the air brakes throws the throttle valve of his Throat wide open and claps on the last Inch of pressure. There Are redeemed sister saints present and they sing louder. There Are Good old deacons there and they add groans to melt the ghost and Many of the elect becoming warmed up encouraged the lord to Wake and do Hia part Quot a Little nearer lord Quot Quot now lord Quot Quot come lord Quot Quot blessed Jesus come quickly Quot Quot glory glory Quot by this time the infection begins to operate the mourners Bench is crowded with frightened women and children and in a very Short time it is found that quite a number have con fessed Jesus and got religion this re Ligion does t last but a week or ten Days it is True but it counts for the lord and the evangel. The secular papers puff the Good work and god is greatly glorified. This leads to a More cheerful paying of the minister s salary and reconciles us to Church exemption from the burdens of government. The value of this spasmodic religion is not to be estimated by dollars and cents the saving of precious souls being the object and not the bettering of the individual or society. If the soul is saved and the Church made stronger reasonable expectation has been fulfilled. Those people whose religion consists in paying their debts discharging honestly their duties to their fellow men and living upright sober and moral lives make poor Church members and Are of Small account to the lord. They Are to be counted out in the final Day. To our collection of photos of ungodly people is lately added that of brother w. H. Godfrey of st. Louis. From the firm Mouth and steady Eye it is easy to perceive that the boy evangel Harrison has made no impression upon the original of that photo. Heresy in the very pulpit. Memphis tenn., has developed Rev. N. M. Long a presbyterian divine who is a whole menagerie and circus in himself. He is opposed to All manner of sunday Laws and it is believed Barnum will soon begin to bid on him. The Halmagian enquirer of March 24, editorially says Memphis is stirred to her profoundest Depths Over the Sermon of Rev. N. M. Long a presbyterian minister in which be maintained that sunday Laws were unconstitutional and an outrage upon the rights of citizens a positive Burden upon one class of people. In this position Kev. Long declared that he stands with the Christian fathers st. Paul Luther Calvin and Knox. He claims furthermore that there is nothing in the scriptures to compel a Man to observe the Sabbath. These sentiments from a minister have naturally created intense excitement throughout the City and from several pulpits yesterday Rev. Lon i was rebuked in Good round ministerial terms. Twenty nine coloured preachers raked him Over the coals. One coloured minister who Speaks four languages asserts that to will yet take the heretic s Scalp. If he can t do it in one language it is promised he will assault him hip and this i in another. Or. Long has taken advanced ground for a minister and the result will be watched with interest. You must read the advertisement of brother George m. Wells and remember that you have to consult him if you want to know anything about Chio Keni. Brother Reed must go. Rev brother Myron w. Reed must go must go to Denver. There Haa been no ringing of Bells and sounding of Gonna to alarm the nations As was the Case during the siege of threats that preceded the departure of Sood Rev. Brother doctor Pierson. The reverend brother doctor was eminently adapted to this locality the Rev. Reed is not. He remarked in his announcement of withdrawal that he might by remaining hold Hia congregation up to the Point they now occupy but to Strain them up a Little higher he did t think he could. The Able Pierson and the Atill More Able boy preacher no. 2, Are of the Caliper that can beat please the of Indianapolis. Those Are the men that have overawed the infidels till not one in a Hundred of them dares confess himself an unbeliever on the Street or be known to read much less to help support the ironclad age. The infidel is not afraid of Myron w. Reed. He would recognize a go Man without stopping to inquire what he believes nor would he persecute him because of his unbelief. He belongs to that intellectual class of ministers who Aee that the Church has got to unload the rubbish of the dark Ages and Advance to a higher plane and As the Church people of this City Don t believe any such thing As that Don t believe there can be any doctrine better than that of eternal torture for the unbelieving they can part with brother Reed with Small regrets hence there has been no great clamor in the newspapers Over Bis loss. At Denver the Rev. Reed will be Apt to find progressive christians. The fact that he is honorable Liberal and progressive and takes Little Stock in gods and religions will bring the Manly sceptics to hear him and grist to the Mill. Original and Able evangelical utterance the following is a Sample of the Quot original Quot and eloquent pulpit utterances that Are setting st. Louis so wild that the Globe Democrat feels impelled to publish four or five solid nonpareil columns of it every Day. The Able and Aen Aible extract a from a Sermon delivered by boy evangel no. 1, March 18th what will you aay or will you Frame an excuse and say the reason was Quot i did t feel conviction enough i did t feel that the minister preached directly enough to me Quot what will you say what will you aay dear precious dying fellow traveler to a never dying eternity Quot Friend How Camest thou Here without the Weddine garment on Quot John Randolph failed to get that garment on. Hia Mother was a Christian he was brought up in the Bible truth and still Hia Kat breath was godless. Byron the poet died in Hia 36th year and yet Byron cried out in Hia last Momenta Quot shall i Aue for mercy now Quot As he Shook like a Leaf in the wind. A a Man said in Chicago Quot unbelief May do very Well when a mania Well but when you come Down to sickness and death you want something else Quot and turning to his Friend he said Quot go Uick and get me a methodist minister Don t want that Man who has been preaching to me the last five years. Don t bring him Quot Friend How Camest thou Here without the wedding garment on Quot a without being saved without having religion without Ever being convert what will you say what will you a our answer. What. Read in a paper about that one Ingersoll who was Here yesterday lecture Ink. He got a great band of people around their hilarity. They were late Ghinst Over hell and they were laughing Over the Bible. My god i and they were laughing Ever Christ and he got them up to a certain pitch of excitement so the paper said and All at once he seemed to Check himself and he said Quot if i should find out that i have made a mistake i should say the god i am would he i would say to god Quot i am sorry Quot or language the purport of that. I am sorry. Would he say that no no this text that i have to night answers just what he will say. Friend How Camest thou hither without the wedding garment ? Why if that Blasphemer or if you unsaved die and unconverted go to meet god should try to say anything god could put the hand of his almighty Wrath Over the lips of your eternal spirit and shut them at once. He could take Hia Finger and close those lips As he says he will for when god says at the judgment Quot How Camest Guiou hither without the wedding garment on Quot what will that Man who was Here yesterday who damns the Church of his Mother and the Christ of his life and puts the Bible under the feet of his meanness what will be say ? of he will say Quot i found that i could t believe the a what ? Quot Why Quot Quot what will he say ? Quot Why i ear w Nat will you say aay what will be you will be your reply i credit god. All Good Muat be credited to the Church no matter who Paya the Bills. Of course there could be no Good and perfect gift that did t come from god. The new Albany Public press Haa a Case in Point and it says there seems to be an unaccountable disposition among religious and benevolent people generally to run everything into religion. The Catholic too often wants to mix that sort of religion with everything else and protestants seem even worse. It seems that the Cornelia Culbertson orphans Home a to be run into sectarian channels and yet it a supported by the to Ayers. The Public press Haa always been a warm supporter and advocate of the orphans Home and its managers and would not utter a word derogatory of the institution and those controlling it so Long a it a conducted properly. The society has a Bill before the Board of county commissioners this term for $821 for caring for the orphans in the orphans Home of Thia City for the Paat three months. Under the Law the ladies of the Home Are allowed 5 cents per Day for caring for the orphans. It seems that s2s. i a Quot a a a organization Saya Quot the children of the Home shall attend Serviesa at the nearest protestant or. Bullard a member of the Board called attention to the matter and contended that if such rules were enforced the institution should not be maintained at Public expense As it was sectarian. He contends that it would be manifestly unjust to allow a Rule of this sort to exist and for the maintenance of children at Public expense. As Catholic jew non believer and protestant taxes alike it is astonish ing that the intelligent and philanthropic ladies of the Home should enforce a Rule of this kind. The Bill has not been allowed and the county attorney has the matter under consideration As to whether it can be allowed under the Law. Within the past few years there Haa been considerable complaint among tax payers that the Cost of taking care of the orphans was beyond the Bounds of necessity and Charity. Besides there seems to be a disposition on the part of some parties to fill up the institution with children regardless of the fact As to whether they Are needy or not. There should be Reform in this matter. Let us be just As Well As merciful and charitable and not sectarian and fanatically religious. The five cents per Day we presume is for each orphan in the Home a editor l A. Will he say Quot Why i did t believe in did t believe there was a a but the Bible Days Quot let god be True and every Man a Quot but i did t believe there was a judgment but you Are Here and you Are judged and damned. Quot i did t believe there was a Quot i did t believe there waa a hell i did t believe there was reprobation i did t believe that god could be but he won t say that. Here is what he will say and Here is what you will say Quot and he waa Quot Friend How Camest thou hither without the wedding garment on Quot the Bible Saya speech Leas speechless speechless that Man talked for two hours Over in that opera House to a rabble i and at that Day he will have nothing to say. The prayers of his Mother the Creed of his father the Church of his boyhood will All come up before him and with one groan his feet will walk on the hot pavement of damnation. Stop 1 what will you say when god Calls you to judgment Quot Friend How Camest thou Here not being saved Quot speechless speechless speechless nothing to say. God almighty then turns and says to that soul Quot bind him hand and foot take him away and cast him out into the outer darkness there shall be he can laugh shall be weeping and gnashing of Teeth. Of my dear precious dying fellow immortal soul get the wading garment on get Christ get religion be saved. There is no it other Way to travel to the judgment safely Bat to get the band of your soul in the hand of that might Savior that has saved millions and millions. Of my god of my god god help a writer in the st Louis Globe Democrat March 17th, is fearfully agitated Over the Success of col. Ingersoll in drawing a crowded House in that City. He advises As an antidote to Ingerson s infidelity the Reading of Theodore Parker s ten sermons. He Saya to the go your report of col. Ingerson s lecture in to Day s Issue begins with the following Para aph Quot col. Robert Ingersoll Drew a tremendous House As usual at Pope s theater yesterday. A Large and not the least vociferous portion of the Audielee was composed of i have Small use for Ingersoll but when such a statement As the above can be truthfully made and when it a equally True i presume of All other cities which the great infidel visits the meaning of his work can hardly be misunderstood or its consequences overestimated. If what a called Quot orthodoxy Quot were not losing its hold upon the popular mind and if there were not a tra it Macy in that mind to Drift into the opposite extreme this fierce and reckless iconoclast who tears Down but will not cot can not build of on the ruin he has made could not draw such Large and a Thusia Stic audiences. I am in Willie however to believe that any considerable number of Ingersoll s admin a Aray in their hearts satisfied to leave the matter where he leaves it Are Content to it live and die Quot without Hope and without god in the world Quot and rest the Here and the hereafter upon a Barren negation.
