Monroe the solution of this All important problem has attracted the attention and has been the study of Mankind in All Ages. Although it appears to have been solved time and again the deductions made and the conclusions arrived at have never been put to test for application generally speaking by the parties making such discoveries or by the people to whom they were made known. The problem has Only been partially solved that is Only so far As the person endeavouring to solve it was advanced and has become initiated into the seeming mysteries of nature. There is an old and time worn Maxim to the effect that where ignorance is Bliss tis Folly to be Wise Quot and this perhaps accounted for the action of the Early teachers of the Church which led them to Deal out to her subjects the greatest amount of earthly Bliss they were capable of by keeping such subjects in absolute ignorance thinking no doubt they were rendering humanity a great and lasting Benefit. As the world has progressed people have arrived at the conclusion that Wisdom without Bliss is preferable to ignorance with it. Ignorance is the seed wanted for the pro Piga Tion of crime is the source of All vice. Quot he that voluntarily continues ignorant is guilty of All the crimes which ignorance if we reflect but a moment we will realize the truth of this opposition. The greater part of the vice and crime committed and carried on in our midst is by those comparatively ignorant that is ignorant of the injury they Are working to themselves and to those about them. Vice and crime Are not so prevalent among the educated classes. The More highly cultivated society becomes the More real and True knowledge it acquires the less crime is found in its midst. Knowledge is the Savior and in Lightener of the world. Just As rapidly As the people Progress and acquire knowledge the greater insight will they have of nature her Laws and How they can or rather How they should live. Quot then consult thy knowledge that decides that As each thing to More perfection grows it feels More sensibly both Good and that Man will Ever reach the Heights of perfection that he will be Able to know absolutely How he should live can never be until he has attained perfection. This we do know that As he increases in knowledge he becomes better acquainted with the great and Universal Law of cause and effect becomes More susceptible of the Good or evil that must necessarily follow and accompany his every deed. When Man will reflect and realize that this every act is photographed upon the great Tablet of nature when even the Trees the rocks and All Earth stand with wide open eyes drinking in his every action he will be less prone to do that which is evil knowing these elements have witnessed his doing and had they the Power to Ira eak would cry out against him. Every thought of Man a Heni Given an outward expression becomes from the moment of such physical expression a positive and eternal element. It is therefore necessary that he duly consider hid thoughts before giving them expression so Esi pressed Tivey Are not capable of a demoralizing con. Of eruption Likhat a capable of doing in just of Pitroda Sittg evil effects. The athenian has said direction. Quot in everything Yoti do consider the if Man does tvs he soon learns that life is More than Mere existence that he is a Small though necessary part of the great machine which is gradually bringing the race toward the goal it seeks. Although Man May and often does forget his acts being finite i he must not consider that not produced a lasting impression upon his faculty of memory they Are consequently lost to nature. The re is nothing lost there is nothing gained. The elements Are the same Quot yesterday to Day and Marcus Aurelius says Quot whatever drops out of life is a aught up somewhere foe the world loses the re is not one Iota Mote of knowledge in the. Universe to Day than there was it the begin Ning of All time. It in Jonly the expression discovery and application of that pledge mans a and is capable of amount of knowledge he acquires by experience and the exercise of his faculties the better Able is he to ascertain higher and More complicated truths. Man does not event that is create he simply produces the conditions whereby the principle discovery May be applied and Given expression. If Man does not create make or invent it is a re iteration of the old adage Quot there is nothing new under the As Man can not create but simply acquires by what Means is he to make these acquisitions by the desire to investigate and the exercise of the faculties with which he has been endowed. By the exercise of reason that faculty without which Man would not be Man but an animal of the lower order of life though possessed of Man s physical the exercise of which faculty is necessary to his existence As a rational being. Quot in All things let reason be your having been endowed with the Means ascertaining How he should like the question resolves itself into two Heads. Man s duty to himself self preservation being one of the first Laws of nature and secondly Man s duty to his fellow Man. The first resolves itself into the cultivation of his moral nature. The close regard of his mental and physical health. The acquisition of Rowledge and the of proper Cyr Quot / Man should live As near in accordance with nature and natural Law As is possible. Being endowed with the Means of so doing he should use those Means to accomplish the end by neglecting so to do he becomes morally criminal. Volney says Quot nature has established Laws your part is to obey them observe reason and profit by it should be his aim to make it As near perfect As possible. Quot let him build for himself a Noble the cultivation of this part of Man s being leads him far above All things partaking of animal life is wholly of a spiritual nature. It is an element invisible and intangible it can Only be recognized through the result of its Workings. It is the cultivation of these moral faculties that gives us men possessed o that love of humanity men whose highest aim in life is to place their Fellowmen upon an equal footing with themselves men who would gladly Lay Down their lives in by so doing it would Lead humanity one step nearer the truth. The cultivation of these faculties is necessary in Man to keep him above the level of the brute creation. Were Man to allow these faculties to lie dormant or were he to put them Down whenever they sought activity it would be but a Short time before they would cease to act. He would be ruled by his animal propensities and brute Force. An example of the loss of faculty by non used is found in a species of fish which inhabits the Waters of Mammoth Cave. Living in Dar chess having no use for the organs of vision they Are totally Blind. The organs of vision have become emaciated and Are almost of blistered. Take any animal and by a certain course of procedure its nature May be so changed that one seeing it when first taken and again after the object sought has been accomplished would not from appearance be Able to distinguish it As one and the same. Of course the form would remain the same but the nature has been changed. Man is no exception to the Rule As numerous instances brought to our notice demonstrate that unless he puts Forth his every Endeavor toward something higher he has the tendency to and does take the opposite Quot there is no Middle i r to. A ground. Were an a axe Progress nor Retro eds editable in either Quot happiness or downward with its accompanying wretched no a la Iid misery. In fact the Cotita in of Man s moral mature is As Nevei sary to Bis existence As faculty of reason. A Man s duty to himself isted amp a regard of Bis mental health. A Dimity he owes it self and the Wei old Ai larger cause in daily life he comes in Oono tact Quot with those Momory less affected by such Contaz i the author of future. Generation s Man it object should be Sci ill to Bias his a a amp Prin inherit no bodily or mental c disease. Future get Isipa. Tons de and wholly Ruppi Lbw Man pays a due regard to of health. If he pays Norrie to these Laws his offspring Wil Piibe full of Dit a ask and Dicori dance Din mental and pm if he Lias a due f a a tii future generations will be giants in mental and physical str Man allows his mental and pm id Cal to become debilitated it affects those with whom he Assoc a mediately at least. How much does Man know of what he is capable while a subject of my i it a and physical weakness nature cannot exert her Powers to the extent she could in a More healthy and perfect Structure. It should be the aim of All humanity to so preserve their physical that their mental May not be injured thereby for the latter depends upon and receives its support from the former. One whose physical is exhausted cannot be otherwise than mentally affected therefore he is. Abusing the greatest gift of nature who does not look Well to health. The Only method by which the full result of what the mental and physical of Man is capable is by a just and due regard of All the Laws of Hygiene. It is then the mind and body Are in full vigor and activity. The emanations of the mind Are of greater value the result of per thought if not respected the moral faculties become less Able to discriminate Between right and wrong. Just so far As they Are affected just so far As Soiha loses self respect like Wue a resp by for others., Charlesw Allen to be continued for the sadly Mii idled boo hello ills., july 6, or. J. E. Monroe by Seely was amused at Reading letter Quot can mind exist without brain Quot Well honors Are was he has furnished me occasion for Good laugh twice. But while Are even on this score i conf i that if the doctor is a Good loj Cian and philosopher i am intellectual Dummy. I did not say objects or me i make themselves but that All things grow develop or evolve from minor forms and these from inorganic matter or atoms. The physical forces properties or attorn bytes of the atom and their chemical Potency est which Are qualities of All atoms produce involuntary without mind thought design or volition All objects or beings m the universe. These forces have no existence Pei be or Independent of the atom but neither does a single atom in the universe exist without them. T talk about Quot dead matter Quot Quot inertia Quot Etc. It does t exis never did and never will. Therefore when i deny that mind exists prior to the atom or before the Organ Sitf i do not ails pm that objects make themselves an Absurdity a but that the atom in greater or lesser aggregation and differentiation forms or evolves into All inorganic bodies As Gold Rock or All organic 200 Pound bodies like i. D. Seelye but to Cap the Climax of complacent impertinence he challenges me a noted spirit repudiate or to Tell what a spirit is made of before i deny the statement that it can exist Well this is too much Wisdom even for my big head 25 inches to diagnose or it is the sheer est stupidity. Challenge an innocent Man to prove that and How he committed a murder ask Beecher to define and locate Quot hell Quot when he repudiates it Asam ii Strous superstition Call upon a a the doctor for proof that once upon a a time a Virgin gave birth to a child As Well As to Call upon me to prove that that exists which i take particular pains at All times to prove does not exist. Is our Friend so blinded by his enthusiasm for spiritualism that he cannot see his own Folly and that for the very reason that be Oher denies hell i deny spirits because no one can define them let the brother a sent or locate them so we All Oak they Are composed of in cd we will All believe in their existence. But because it never has never can and never will be done this is the reason Why i do not be Olieve in hell or spirits and there fore of course cannot enlighten him on that score. the closing arguments of his of invt letter he is equally muddled and affy i is both sides of tie ques tii a of find does not exist in a tire Quot Quot mind has no existence it has neither body nor parts Quot Etc., but on the other Hana he affirms Tiete is something in existence that produces thought through Iowa their when and where the proper conditions of matter exist for that something to conduct thought the fought Quot the printers Devil insist either he a a. Got hold of his a 6., and in practising his divine Art made a at hex poor i Quot out of his sentences or the brother is so confused that i utterly fail to harmonize his Antipodes. He surely affirms what i have repeatedly insisted upon that mind does not exist in nature Independent of brain and living breathing organism and is As much dependent upon a stomach lungs and brain As timekeeping is dependent upon the main Spring in a clock and As the function time keeping most cease when the clock is annihilated so thought must cease when the body is no Inore or surely he would not affirm that the mind or spirit of i. D. Seely previous to his physical origin even previous to the physical process of gestation personally Quot bossed Quot the Job Quot of his own creation and within his Mother s womb formed designed and evolved the infant which eventually developed into the healthy two Hundred Pounder i. D. and yet this must be the sense designed to be conveyed if he believes in the a Priori existence of mind before matter or organism. Or does he refer to the Parent mind or other mind As the Agency that designed or created him ? this is equally absurd As it is a Well known fact that the Parent mind very Seldom desires much less plans and designs reproduction and if coming generations were dependent upon such planing instead of coming in mite of plans humanity would indeed soon die out. In his Iraq letter there is but one farther Point not answered above Vand equally easy disposed of. He asks Quot where did Law come from Quot he like theistic al sophists insists that Law implies a Law maker not recognizing that human Laws and natural Laws so called Are vastly different. The former is an edict established by governments or corporations As a Rule of conduct to its members and of course has a be nning and May come to an end May exist or not or be com Elied with or violated. Natural in has to thing in common with such temporary enactments of temporary rulers and in order to avoid confusion of terms and definitions i have always preferred the word Quot order Quot to that of Quot Law Quot As it More correctly conveys the True sense designed to be conveyed. Thus instead of saying it is the Law of nature Etc., i would say it is the order method process or Nate Mode of nature or of matter Etc. The natural Law brother Seely talks about is simply this Universal eternal physical and chemical Force and Potency pre fading All matter which is coexistent with it in extent and time and which does and cannot exist previous without or after it. It was never created simply because the atom matter was never created and placing some imaginary Quot double Quot or Quot spirit Quot around each atom to or form falsely supposed by brother s. To be dead or inert in itself As a motor to propel or cause matter to act As it does is the grievous error spiritualists have Ever been guilty of. Instead of placing the Power Force or Law in the simple element itself be it mud a dry Bone or protoplasm they have conceived of an imaginary Factor greatly complicating the existing problems. Matter is Force Force is matter. The one is abstract existence and the other is the Quality or kind of existence. Therefore Law never came. As the atom never came which if it did would imply that it came from nothing an Absurdity and As the atom has always been Force brother Seely s Quot Law Quot never came but is As old As the atom one and the a Tael which is As old As time which is eternity.
