The title to the real estate on which the City is built is very imperfect on account of the fact that that j ortion of the state has never been surveyed and regularly by the gov ment and the Jiro Sperty is held by Quot squatter s rights Quot which Are Good Emeigh to be sure until a Man with a better claim comes along. Jii consequence of this state of affairs the City can not raise a Revenue by taxing real estate but she makes up All deficiencies by licensing the necessary a there Are 125 saloons in the City each a me of which pays a License of $500 a year. Twenty six Public gambling Halls Are open Day and night and these pay a License of $5 a month for Euclit table in use. Billiard tables paying a License of 5200 a year each Are to be found in almost every Saloon and Hall. Three Quot dance Halls Quot adhere the lowest and vilest of both sexes congregate nightly to make night hideous with their Raad lascivious to tries pay a License of $150 a year each to the City. The Demi ulc too Are made a source of Revenue to the City one Hunt red and Twenty five licensed women each paying a fee of per month for the privilege of Quot plying their we were told by the chief of police that the aggregate receipts of the 125 saloons last year were $1,095,000. Here is situated the state Penitentiary Colorado Springs with their sparkling Waters famed for great medical Virtues and Manitou the Sartoga of the West with pikes Peak looming up in grandeur to a height of ,147 feet Only seventeen Miles away Are Points of interest along the route of which space forbids our attempting a full description at this time. The state has an area of 104,500 Square Miles nearly As Large As the new England states and new York combined. Its Mountain Are covered wit ii forests of valuable Timber and swollen with a hidden but unlimited wealth of Gold Silver Iron Copper Lead and Coal. All the valleys and foot Hills Are covered with a luxuriant growth of nutritious grasses and the soil when properly irrigate in no Rains fall Here from May or june to february yields Rich returns for the Husbandman s labor. Last year tie yield of wheat in round numbers was 1,500,000 bushels of Oats 650,000, Corn 475,000, Ami Barley 110,000 bushels besides hire and Fine All Kin it is of Garden vegetables. This year the estimate value of the live Stock in the state is $20,000,000. Sheep raising is an important and grow j ing Industry and the business is exceedingly profitable. As a producer of Gold und Silver Colorado loads All the countries of the world. Since the first discovery of the precious deposits less than Twenty three years ago the state has yielded �140,580,752 of Gold and Silver and the yield is constantly increasing. Last year it was 28,< 87, 85, or about one i third of the total product of the United states.
