Indianapolis Locomotive (Newspaper) - December 2, 1848, Indianapolis, Indiana r correspondent a a to Day s paper under thu above signature is not very Liberal in his idea of Freedom. He would have us suppress the opinions of others because they do nol agree with his own and this too under the plea of vulgarity. We want to say a few words to him and through him to others. Our journal is not the advocate of any Creed sect or Dogma it is supported and read by men of All classes and opinions the rut Sellers and the Temperance advocate. The Temperance men have been making a vigorous move to suppress the sole of liquors and to More effectually carry their object have adopted measures that other portions of our citizens Aro opposed to. One of this latter class we mean one of those opposed to the Means not the measure asks admission into our columns we Grant it and at the same time allow his opponents the same privilege. For thus allowing the two sides to discuss the question Candor denounces and threatens forever to exclude us from his premises. The question is one of vital interest to this Community it is discussed freely in private circles and there arc Good citizens and Good men on both sides of it. We Are not inc lined to shut the Mouths of one party nor is it right that they should be shut they have rights As Well As others at least the right to be heard. If their cause is Good they can sustain it if it is not Candor and his co adj tors can easily vanquish them and by so doing gain proselytes of those that Are now lukewarm. Right is might and must prevail. A Niue to have As yet taken no part in this discussion nor have to Felt ourselves responsible for the language used by i there we distinctly said the Public should be the umpires while we were merely the lookers on. In publishing communications we give the language of those that write them we do not revise and Correct them to suit ourselves but let them talk we do vol hash communications in our paper and thus upon the Public mind in intrude it As if we thought like Ota Citan Cooks no food was fit to eat till tee had chewed it. Our correspondents on both sides of this question Are gentlemen is such Are socially acknowledged by Candor they Are entirely unknown to each other As the authors of their respective articles and we did not think they would use language that could Hurt the feelings of the most refined we have always in Denvered to take n fair and Liberal but Independent course in conducting our Little Sheet and Whilo we have charge of it it shall be conducted in no other. From this course we will not swerve to Rotain one or one Hundred subscribers we feel perfectly free to Sny what suits us and our subscribers Are equally free to Laic the paper or not As suits them. There is no compulsion up this matter but both parties arc at perfect Liberty. Thanksgiving Day passed off very quietly. The a Burklu a were rather Slimy it tended but there was divine service in them nil and in the evening the benevolent society met in Wesley Chapel we cannot number the Lurkis and pumpkin pics that a a Fie red but their destruction was great. W e have bad much to be thankful for within the past year both is a nation and a Community and to the great giver of All Good should be freely panted the Praise for our Prosperity. alarm of fire was raised about dusk on monday evening caused by a window curtain in the room Over Youngs tailor shop being set on fire by some children that were playing with a Candle. It was extinguished without material damage. On wednesday evening another alarm was raised caused by a Chimney getting on fire. Wore it not for the indomitable Energy and perseverance of our citizens in Case of fire we would rest under great apprehension. The engines Are not sufficient to Mastor a Large fire and n great portion of our City is built with wooden buildings that will go if they Ever get a fair Start. This City has been highly favored in that respect heretofore but there is no Security that it will continue so the carelessness of one Man May destroy the labor of Many for years and to guard against this the City should be better provided with proper apparatus. Oct is currently reported and believed by Many that the Council Are going to Enisley 100 a Gemmen of color to act is Public Boot Blacks during the coming Winter to Brush the corporation mud from the feet of pedestrians. Wonder if it would be cheaper to do that than to fix the Crossings ? can any of the members of the Union literary society inform us or the Public through our columns what they have been doing lately or what they intend doing during the coming Winter the lectures Given by members of the society and others last Winter Hove not been forgotten and we Hope it will to renewed this. Come gentlemen let us know something of your doings. From Tho Best information to have there has been one mild Case of Small pox in this county 2 Miles from the City which ease is now convalescent. There is now two very mild cases of Vario Loid at the same place in persons that had been previously vaccinated. There is not now nor has there been since last Winter any Case within the limits of the City which is 2 Miles , december 2, 1848. The ladies have been much neglected for the last few weeks but they shall have no cause to complain in future. Remember that fair Eitress of the Boston transcript makes the following sensible remarks a when old age and youth intermarry it is very certain that there is no love on either Side. There May be passion on one Side but there is no pure Loveon either. It is very remarkable is the worlds ways and these unreasonable matches sometimes occur that we never Bear of Young girls marrying poor old men. All experience shows that they marry Rich ones and thus these wives arc bought up As the slaves at the South with Money and a Price shame shame on such heartless humanity a nature re Gardful of the blabbing race planted no Beard upon a woman a face nol Saunders razors though the very Best could shave a Chin that never is at rest. is a Blush like a Little girl 1 because it becomes a woman.
