The Saloon keeper referred Tai had thirty two indictments against him for St Ling to minors and habitual drunkards and i there is not much wonder that the Quot Back waa knocked out of Hin business. If a Saloon keeper violates a reasonable and consistent Law let him a Fifer the consequences. Saloon keepers had ju8t As Well get Down Toa legitimate business As anybody else and the sooner they do it the better. But where there Are unjust Laws As there Are in most towns in Ohio they Are justifiable in disobeying them. Take every Case to the higher courts and Bee. The pairs of Illinois. A butt the prohibitionists demand. The prohibitionists of Indiana Are a Brave set of individuals. Thev Are composed of a lot of dead Deats broken Down politicians and men of the lowest order of society and to give their movement a Shade of respectability have to speak of it As the ladies movement. The following appeared in a recent Issue of one of their papers know All men that the Temperance women of Indiana hereby ask that the Constitution of the state be so amended As to prohibit the importation manufacture and Sale of alcoholic beverages within the Borders of the state and they ask that the voters of the several counties of the state will Combine irrespective of a arty to Send up men to the next site legislature who will consent to submit such an amendment to the votes of the people of the state for ratification or rejection. And we will Ever Pray Francis Murphy. Francis Murphy has concluded to let the fanatics do their own howling and he will keep a first class Saloon in Quot Vincennes Indiana As will be seen from the following announcement in the daily Sun of dec. 4th this gentleman whose advertisement has Bren seen prominently in the Sun for several weeks has Arri de in the City from Mitchell. Having taken the room lately occupied by Terrence Dean he has had the room painted re papered and furnished throughout. A Quot Monarch Quot carom billiard table and fifteen Ball Pool table has been placed in the House. The Quot bar has Bee a stocked with the finest of inns and liquors bottled ales imported and Domestic. He is a first class bar keeper and comes Well recommended As an expert in his business. This is to be a first class place and gentlemen in need of some refresh cents for the Quot inner Inan Quot will do Well to give him a Call. A the prohibitionists Are very loud friends of the ladies inasmuch As they Hope to make tools of them. They expect to get into Power through the Influent of the women very Well knowing that they would scarcely be recognized or noticed by the lowest of society Westfe it not for the respect i ability that the women give the movement. A masterpiece of bigotry. Oppression and in filmy. We have not the statutes of the state of Illinois before us but in substance one of their legislative enactments provides that Quot any Man Selling liquor is liable in damages to the wife and children of any one who receives an injury while in a state of so far the Law would be just enough. But it goes further and makes anyone liable who on the Day a drunkard has been bodily injured whether he sold him the first Glass at break of Day or the fiftieth after he had drank All Day along. Still further if the Saloon keeper is not Able to pay the Fine costs or damages the landlord of whom he rents the premises he occupies becomes liable and his real estate subject to seizure on execution and Sale without Relief or exemption. And still worse after the wife or widow of the drunkard has recovered each one of his children can in turn bring a suit against the same parties and recover additional damages. This is substantially the Law in Illinois. Fiends of Freedom and right in Indiana Iowa and other Western states what do you think of that liquor dealers of Illinois Are you not ashamed of yourselves that such a Law should disgrace your statute books where Are you. Where Are your friends on election Days when you Are called to vote for the members of your legislature ? or is it with you alas like with the liquor dealers generally Are you so wedded to your political opinions that your own party candidate if he be the worst enemy to personal Liberty should be dearer to you than a Man of Liberal principles ? let that be As it May for the existence and continuance of such Laws you have nobody to blame but yourselves. We will cite you an example of the outrageous working of that Law As we often said Quot facts speak louder than at the last or one but last term of the circuit court of Mclean county of in judgment of $500,00 in damages was rendered against two Well known and most respectable Saloon keepers of Bloom Ringlon messes. Christ Riebsame and we. Sclia Usten men of the highest standing in the Community it the suit of the widow of a drunkard who was killed by filling under the wheels of a Railroad car. Our informant tells us that at the trial it was proven that on a certain morning at 8 o clock the deceased had taken his first drink of that Day at or. Riebsame s Saloon and within an hour or less thereafter his second drink at or. Schausten s. That he was at that time perfectly sober but that after words he went from place to place drinking repeatedly at probably Twenty different saloons until he became so drunk that lift Loon keepers refused to give him another Glass of Lii for when he hired some one to buy him a Bot be of whisky a a kept on drinking. At nine o clock that night thirteen hours after he had taken his first drink As above state he tried to Board a train while in motion reeled and fell under the car wheels and was crushed to death. What messes. Riepsame an Schausten had to do with his Drunken spree need not be commented upon. Yet they were the Only two of All the Saloon keepers visited by the wretch who owned enough real estate to to met the rapacity of a woman without principle and her lawyers. So they were picked out As the victims who under the blackmailing system sanctioned by Law could be made to bleed freely. To the astonishment and wonder of the Community a Law firm who to that time had stood High in the esteem of the Community messes. Weldon and Mcnulty appeared for the plaintiff and succeeded in obtaining a verdict against defendants. Rather than to run the risk of further actions in damages from each of the eight children to resist which would Bavy entailed As big an out Lay in lawyers fees As the damages As seed against them the defendants Settle i by paying the judgment and costs and compromising with the eight children at a Cost of about $1000 to each defendant. What was most surprising to the people was that a Man like general Mcnulty who owed his election to the Senate of his own state and to Congress exclusively to the Liberal element of the population of his District who had voted for him irrespective of party politics should so far degrade himself As to encourage such a prosecution and exert Bis utmost influence to bring this legally authorized outrage to its consummation. Citizens of Illinois Ponder Over those facts they Are of daily occurrence in your state. We say that any Law which can be thus perverted into a Means of blackmailing and robbery is an attempt against the rights of free men we further say that a Law making one Man Pecunia Rily responsible for the misdemeanours or criminal offences of another is a monstrosity in this nineteenth Century. A set of fanatics had succeeded in smuggling a similar act through the legislature of Ohio it was known As the Adair liquor Law but As soon As it was tested before the supreme count of that state that portion of the Law was declared unconstitutional. Should the liquor dealers in Illinois Ever a wish to make a test Cam it their state col Paul schuster a lawyer of 20 years stand ing and expert Enos in All matters pertaining to legislation restrictive of the liquor dealers privileges would cheerfully assist in bringing the matter before the supreme court. Beer and tear Eprakce. Some fanatical Lunatic by the name of j. Henry made a speech at a meeting of the National Christian Temperance Union in Beardstown Cass county Illinois a report of which appeared in the messenger of that place november 15th, and in its Issue of november 22, we find the following sensible and pointed reply in the Virginia enquirer of the same county by a genuine Temperance Man. We had intended to reply to the article ourselves but find that our Friend at Beardstown has done so Well concluded to give the preference to him the gentleman refers to Beer and condemns its use indiscriminately without making any distinction in the use and abuse of the beverage and instead of making a fair argument in the matter he Only produces some obscure remarks. He says a there never was a greater error than to suppose that the manufacture of Beer was in the interest of Temperance and he believes he believes Only because he does not a a Oil that Beer drinking is worse than whisky Quot and reasons first Quot that it creates an appetite that must be satisfied afterwards by a stronger stimulant Quot Etc., Etc. This Point May be founded on individual views or personal experience but cannot stand the proof in general. The authentic reports and statistics of the country have shown that the increase of the manufacture of Beer has diminished the use of whisky and since the introduction of a Good and healthy article of Beer drunkenness has been on the decrease and thousands of dyspeptic have reaped a Benefit by the moderate use of Beer and Many women even in Beardstown have found out the beneficial qualities of Beer while nursing the babies. Whisky won t do it secondly he remarks that Quot Beer units Man for labor and business thirdly Quot it Blun s his in marshy counties with Low shores along the Rivers the Field labourers in Germany get their regular daily rations of Beer and in Hungary on the Large plantations the labourer gets his wine because they have to abstain from the use of water which will produce chills and fever. Quot it blunts his Sensini yes when taken in great excess still it does not leave the bad effects hat Tea drunkenness or opium eating does that prevails in Eastern states to a great extent it does not produce that trembling of the hands that whisky drinking does. Fourthly he says Quot it a strings the this remark the employees in every brewery can prove the contrary. The gentleman would have to Hunt a Good while to find a Man in those establishments who Suff r. From dyspepsia. The comparison with England where the people use heavy ale and Porter cannot be applied to the use of lager Beer. The concluding remark of the speaker is that Quot the Beer Drinker who does not drink whisky is on the Road to will the drinking of Beer and whisky prevent a Man from ruin now Beer was known and made of different cereals at the time of , by the old egyptians. It was made by the greeks and thracians Galliano by the romans germans and scandinavians. Since the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the manufacture of Beer has been greatly improved. Other nations besides those of Europe have made Beer from different kinds of cereals. The chinese use Rice and the emperor of China has sent to Prussia for expert Brewers to make Beer from Barle. The japanese use Indian Corn and the mexicans Millet. The nubian and abyssinians use different kinds of cereals. St. Louis Brewers Send Beer to Australia and Brazil. Italy Spain and Sicily Are supplied by German breweries. Millions of people Are using that fearful article called Beer and if the speaker takes an interest for the Reform and welfare of Beardstown he will find a larger Field for preaching his doctrine by travelling Over the whole Globe. However if he goes to St. Louis and gets an introduction into the decent clubs there he will find an Assembly of Well educated people american and foreign old and Young ladies and gentlemen entertaining themselves by Conversa Tion Reading or music and most of them drinking Beer. He May travel East and he will find these societies when introduced under the same arrangement. He May go to Europe from South to North everywhere he will find social clubs of people from the Mechanic to the most Learned Mem in society clergymen and professors who see no harm in drinking Beer. In those places he will have poor chances for the introduction of his doctrine. Thue Temperance. Beardstown nov. 30th, 1879. A Temperance town talk. Why Don t it. Pleasant talk up a distillery almost every other City in the state is going to have one. Henry is the Best Corn growing county in Iowa and with a Grain Market that alcohol works would be certain to give would soon make every Farmer in the country Rich. It May sound strange to some but business men Are getting heartily tired of seeing profitable enterprises constantly springing up in other places building up towns and cities while it. Pleasant is being kept in an old fog rut that is certain to turn its corporation into a Corn Field if continued much longer. A reporter. And gentlemen you can say what you will but there is a Good Deal of sense in the above. Now we ship our Corn to other states and pay freight on it and then pay freight and big profits on the whisky to get it Back into the state. Prohibitory Laws As they now stand do not prevent the importation Sale and drinking of alcoholic liquors but do prevent the Farmer from realizing the profit on his Grain that would accrue were there a Sale for it Here for manufacturing purposes. Whisky will be made As Long As Corn and Rye grow and the Temperance Lowans will drink just As much anyhow and it might just As Well be manufactured Here As elsewhere.
