We have not the statutes of the state of Illinois before us but in substance one of their legislative enactments provides that Quot any Man Selling liquor is liable in damages to the wife and children of any one who receives an injury while in a state of so far the Law would be just enough. But it goes further and makes anyone liable who on the Day a drunkard has been bodily injured whether he sold him the first Glass at break of Day or the fiftieth after he had drank All Day along. Still further if the Saloon keeper is not Able to pay the Fine costs or damages the landlord of whom he rents the premises he occupies becomes liable and his real estate subject to seizure on execution and Sale without Relief or exemption. And still worse after the wife or widow of the drunkard has recovered each one of his children can in turn bring a suit against the same parties and recover additional damages. We say that any Law which can be thus perverted into a Means of blackmailing and robbery is an attempt against the rights of free men we further say that a Law making one Man Pecunia Rily responsible for the misdemeanours or criminal offences of another is a monstrosity in this nineteenth Century. A set of fanatics had succeeded in smuggling a similar act through the legislature of Ohio it was known As the Adair liquor Law but As soon As it was tested before the supreme count of that state that portion of the Law was declared unconstitutional. Should the liquor dealers in Illinois Ever a wish to make a test Cam it their state col Paul schuster a lawyer of 20 years stand ing and expert Enos in All matters pertaining to legislation restrictive of the liquor dealers privileges would cheerfully assist in bringing the matter before the supreme court. Beer and tear Eprakce. Some fanatical Lunatic by the name of j. Henry made a speech at a meeting of the National Christian Temperance Union in Beardstown Cass county Illinois a report of which appeared in the messenger of that place november 15th, and in its Issue of november 22, we find the following sensible and pointed reply in the Virginia enquirer of the same county by a genuine Temperance Man. We had intended to reply to the article ourselves but find that our Friend at Beardstown has done so Well concluded to give the preference to him the gentleman refers to Beer and condemns its use indiscriminately without making any distinction in the use and abuse of the beverage and instead of making a fair argument in the matter he Only produces some obscure remarks. He says a there never was a greater error than to suppose that the manufacture of Beer was in the interest of Temperance and he believes he believes Only because he does not a a Oil that Beer drinking is worse than whisky Quot and reasons first Quot that it creates an appetite that must be satisfied afterwards by a stronger stimulant Quot Etc., Etc. This Point May be founded on individual views or personal experience but cannot stand the proof in general. The authentic reports and statistics of the country have shown that the increase of the manufacture of Beer has diminished the use of whisky and since the introduction of a Good and healthy article of Beer drunkenness has been on the decrease and thousands of dyspeptic have reaped a Benefit by the moderate use of Beer and Many women even in Beardstown have found out the beneficial qualities of Beer while nursing the babies. Whisky won t do it secondly he remarks that Quot Beer units Man for labor and business thirdly Quot it Blun s his in marshy counties with Low shores along the Rivers the Field labourers in Germany get their regular daily rations of Beer and in Hungary on the Large plantations the labourer gets his wine because they have to abstain from the use of water which will produce chills and fever. Quot it blunts his Sensini yes when taken in great excess still it does not leave the bad effects hat Tea drunkenness or opium eating does that prevails in Eastern states to a great extent it does not produce that trembling of the hands that whisky drinking does. The comparison with England where the people use heavy ale and Porter cannot be applied to the use of lager Beer. The concluding remark of the speaker is that Quot the Beer Drinker who does not drink whisky is on the Road to will the drinking of Beer and whisky prevent a Man from ruin now Beer was known and made of different cereals at the time of , by the old egyptians. It was made by the greeks and thracians Galliano by the romans germans and scandinavians. Since the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the manufacture of Beer has been greatly improved. Other nations besides those of Europe have made Beer from different kinds of cereals. The chinese use Rice and the emperor of China has sent to Prussia for expert Brewers to make Beer from Barle. The japanese use Indian Corn and the mexicans Millet. The nubian and abyssinians use different kinds of cereals. St. Louis Brewers Send Beer to Australia and Brazil. Italy Spain and Sicily Are supplied by German breweries. Millions of people Are using that fearful article called Beer and if the speaker takes an interest for the Reform and welfare of Beardstown he will find a larger Field for preaching his doctrine by travelling Over the whole Globe. He May go to Europe from South to North everywhere he will find social clubs of people from the Mechanic to the most Learned Mem in society clergymen and professors who see no harm in drinking Beer. They have a Temperance howler in the fort Wayne jail for forging the names of Shurick amp Olds to a Check on the Hamilton National Bank for $35.00. Of this individual the Michigan City dispatch has this to say George Graham an sex convict and noted horse thief and forger and later a prominent Temperance lecturer arrived Here saturday from fort Wayne and of course made the prison a Call. The manner in which he circulated his Quot holy Quot Taffy was truly wonderful. He dwelt on morals tem. Perance and religion and was at the same time a fugitive from Justice having just forged the name of a reputable firm of fort Wayne. This is the same scoundrel Thi. F and dead beat who recently sued the fort Wayne Sentinel for libel. The same Bird who after his time expired attempted to slander Warden Mayne by publishing an attack on the prison management in one of the fort Wayne papers.
