On this View of the subject i think it mu3t be admitted that dealing in ardent spirits in any shape by members of the Temperance society is al Ogeth or incompatible with the design and principles of the Constitution and ought to be so considered and if the article in question has been thus falsely interpreted and there is no doubt it has and will be again it ought to be rendered More explicit not leaving it thus open to the sophistry of those who though constitutionally temperate themselves in the use of ardent spirits Are demoralizing society by the inordinate love of Money. This latter vice although not so odious in outward act hardens and petrified the Best feelings of the human Pieart even More than the intemperate use of ardent spirits and. It is to be lamented pervades All ranks of society As much if not More than those vices which the subjects of it so much condemn in others and unfortunately the Oison is so Subtle that it enters deeply into the minds of Many who Are not at All aware of i themselves and who in other respects Are not Only Correct and exemplary in their moral deportment but Are open professors of that Dence if he be living or his heirs if he has any to Anson Mayhew , Charle Mont.
