Jews As jews in electioneering supported by Yeshiva u. Prof. A Congress claims disputed in soviet jewry Campaign editor Post and opinion your editorial of sept. 8 entitled a respect for Community a will shocked me. It appears that you have chosen to ignore a Basic trend in american society today. As each ethnic group becomes increasingly conscious of its unique interests it would be suicidal for the jews to ignore their own. History has proved time and again the Munich massacre and its immediate aftermath Are Only the latest instance that the Only group which will defend jewish interests Are the jews themselves. As with other ethnic groups the jews have certain specialized interests in addition to those which they share with the Community at Large. Such questions As Aid to Israel and soviet jewry As Well As the debate on quotas in the United states Are of vital interest to american jews. If the jews Are to have a voice however minor in the final Resolution of these issues they must be willing to identify and publicly support those who further these causes. If jewish leaders refuse to Aid those who have been Friendly to them in the past they cannot request that those individuals continue their Aid in the future. Politics is a question of quid pro quo whether we approve of that principle or not. Only if we support our friends now will they support us in the future. President Nixon has been a staunch and Loyal Friend of the jews in his first term of office. At the same time he has acted in a realistic and pragmatic Way to satisfy the legitimate demands of the entire american population. He has altered an outdated and stagnant foreign policy in favor of a flexible and viable one. He has attempted to Grant equal opportunities to All americans and has earned respect both at Home and abroad. It is therefore with Good conscience both As americans and As jews that we should fully support president Nixon in his re election Campaign. You further cite a jewish Public opinion As being in opposition to the involvement of men like Max Fisher Sam Rothberg and William Wexler in the Campaign to re elect the president. Yet what is a jewish Public opinion a do the organizations listed As being in opposition to the involvement of these men truly represent All or even part of a jewish Public opinion a perhaps a jewish Public opinion is better reflected in your own Straw poll which concludes that 53 per cent of All jews favor Nixon do these jews not have a right to express their opinions through their leaders it is therefore of the utmost importance to the jewish Community that More of its leaders become involved in the political issues of the Day. It is Only by actively participating in the political process by Happy Pesach on Rosh has Honah by Joan Wishkoff Corpus Christi Tex. To a in concluding his Rosh has Honah services at Temple Beth Al this year the new rabbi Arthur Steinberg told his congregants a since in be been told i wont see Many of you until next year i wish to express to each of you my wishes for a Good store closes shop Philadelphia a store Selling Only israeli merchandise which opened a year ago with fanfare is closing. The Olive tree a retail store in the Center City designed to sell israelis goods exclusively will disappear but operators will be supplying israeli departments in 20 major department stores throughout the . Funds for promotion never materialized plus the fact that a Stock Sale Only brought in half the proceeds needed to develop the Enterprise were Given As reasons for the closing. Supporting the candidates of our Choice by not fearing to express our views and beliefs that we can have some influence on the situation. Shunning involvement in the political process in this election year would be a tragic Blunder for it would demonstrate to Friend and foe alike that the jews Are a political nonentity. William w. Orbach lecturer department of political science Yeshiva University 340 Haven ave., new York . 10033 editor Post and opinion in her polemic with Yossi Klein to july 14susan Glass of the american jewish Congress turned some history upside Down in a manner that forces me to respond to at least two of her most striking factual errors contained in one sentence alone. She writes a was a late Comer to the cause the student struggle for soviet jewry needed organizational help in its Early stages and the a Congress provided such help through staff aids mailing facilities this is simply untrue. On the contrary we were subjected to years of particular harassment by the top Congress staff Man delegated to soviet jewry affairs a this despite cordial relationships with distinguished Congress people such As Theodore Bikel and Stanley Lowell. To this Day we Are at a loss to explain this gentleman a continued hostility. Nevertheless we appreciate the belated recognition implied in the desire to claim credit for having helped us. Susan Glass description of the student struggle As a a late Comer to the cause is unbelievable but it does open up the question of the extent and timing of the american jewish response to the crisis. During 1964 alone the first year of our existence we launched a unaided and without financial support a series of Pioneer activities for soviet jewry both demonstration Al and informational which were unparalleled then and which a Congress itself has never matched since. We have the newspaper clippings and the records to Back up this statement. We were unique furthermore in that we were not part time or one shot operators but from the beginning devised strategies and tactics based on a concept of Day by Day action at local Community As Well As National Levels. To that end. An office was set up and Legal incorporation obtained As Early As 1964. By contrast it took the american jewish conference on soviet jewry eight years to have its own office and apply for Legal recognition. As the new York times remarked in 1971, a the conference still exists but has no charter and no for my part. I do not wish to denigrate whatever Congress has done for soviet jewry a More than some a less than others. The key question is who in american jewry fought for the principle of full time budgeted and properly structured organizations for soviet jewry with planned strategies and tactics who put into practice the principles thus advocated a Congress has no positive record Here. Student struggle for soviet jewry fought almost entirely alone for Many years in these crucial areas. Miss Glass unfortunate remarks Are expressive of a probably Unco science attempt a All too familiar to us a to wipe away the years of someone else a toil and sacrifice. For the Sake of Justice the record has to be set straight. Jacob Birnbaum National director student struggle for soviet jewry 20c w. 72nd st. New York . 10023rabbi Lazaron disagrees with Kahane s Call for mass emigration editor Post and opinion rabbi Kahaney so Call for mass emigration to Israel a published in the new York times recently should not be ignored. He believes that when the economic situation in the United states becomes worse As it will tempers will shorten present tensions will Sharpen anger will increase and latent prejudices will Rise to the surface people will seek a Scapegoat for their frustrations and the Scapegoat will be the jew. His thesis is that a what happened before can happen again and indeed is beginning to happen the urgent answer is a immediate mass emigration of american jews to his argument is based on the Assumption that a history repeats itself that Given the factors under which antisemitism has flourished in the past and those factors obtain in the United states today the Rise of anti semitism is inevitable. The latter Assumption is subject to question. Is antisemitism an inescapable inc i d e n t in the unfolding processes of history need it necessarily happen Here As the rabbi insists that depends upon a number of factors. The first is the attitude of christians. I would ask my Christian friends do you think you could stand up against the pressures of an aggressive anti semitism if it occurred in the United states the second Factor would be jews. I would say to my brother jews look into your own hearts. Are there among us some guilty of such conduct As to create critical and anti pathetic attitudes toward us we jews must face it. There Are vulgar christians of whom people say what uncouth people there Are showy vulgar people among jews. Many however say of them of those showy vulgar jews they want the latest in dress. They Are Sharp traders. There Are other jews who Are belligerently self conscious. They do not hesitate to say we feel uncomfortable among non jews. So just As there Are christians who should face up to the question will you stand up and be counted so there Are jews who must ask themselves Are we entirely without sin shall i be labor the Well known Factor anti semitism on a Large scale is not possible Here because of the cultural intellectual and other gifts to our National life made by jews a says the Pessimist jews in Germany were also Foremost contributors to the cultural intellectual and economic life of Germany but their contributions did not Stop Hitler. When economic depression comes anti semitism is not far behind. Frankly i am not enough of a social scientist or historian to make a judgement. I done to know. But this i do know. Great Progress has been made in the last 40 years in interfaith inter group relations. And from a practical Point of View jewish economic Power in the United states is even greater than it was in pre Hitler Germany. Also there were other factors in the German picture a tradition of anti semitism there had been no movement like the National conference of christians and jews in Germany ecumenism was hardly thought of among protestants and roman catholics in Germany. The spirit in the churches of our country and among Many Many christians in the United states is totally different. I believe with . Chesterton who was no Lover of jews that there is something in the Anglo Saxon attitude toward jews which would make it impossible for any repetition of the Hitler Ian persecutions to occur Here. And this something has rubbed off on other minority groups. As a practical solution it must be asked what would be the effect in the Middle East and among the Arab countries if the largest jewish Community in the world would descend upon them either gradually or planned Over a period of years one of the major emphases of my ministry was interfaith cooperation to build Bridges of sympathy and understanding Between groups and faiths. I see cooperation today where there was none yesterday. There has been Advance. I want my jewish Brethren Here to beware of Clannis Ness. I do not want them to be hopeless of american democracy for that is the premise of rabbi Kahaney a Contention. There is no Hope for the survival of democracy in the United states. That is what he is saying. I do not believe it. I want my jewish Brethren to continue their Community activities. I want them to have Faith in the democratic process and in their fellow americans. We jews May not ignore some ugly facts. Some jewish realtors Are rightly accused of Sharp practice some jewish landlords Are owners of slums. There Are unfortunately other negative factors among us. But these factors Are found also among non jews. We Are a minority group. Our attitude toward our fellow americans must be Friendly open minded. Our conduct must be impeccable. We m i eliminate All parochialism among us. We dare not self ghetto ize ourselves. The imperatives of our Judaism must be the inspiration of our lives. It is the synagogue which has preserved the jew. What the future holds i do not know but this i do know we must not give Way to pessimism not be cowards and leave the Field to those who hate us. And if violent anti semitism should god forbid raise its ugly head Here we must use All our Power organize All our friends and fight it As men there Are dangers today in our National life. But they Are not dangers to jews alone. They Are dangers for All americans. Forces Are rising in our midst that increasingly intrude upon our personal lives that Little by Little Are destroying All the advances the last three decades have made in social legislation forces that threaten Freedom of thought Freedom of expression Freedom of person. We must fight those forces not As jews but As citizens of the greatest Experiment in the history of human relations. Rabbi Morris s. Lazaron 241 West indies or. Palm Beach Fla. 33450
