B prejudice in Germany look at u. by Heywood Broun the jewish telegraphic Agency presents this article by special arrangement with the new York world Telegram one Challenge Flung out by the hit Lar partisans deserves a Fuller ans wer than we americans have Given As yet. When protest comes from Here against the cruel and stupid antisemitism of nazi Germany defenders of Derfl her Are fond of saying a Well How about yourselves is there no prejudice in the United states Quot now that can be answered partly by saying that the German drive against jewish citizens is festered and fomented by the government itself. No such charge lies fairly at the door of american officialdom. And yet that answer Isnit Good enough. We must admit that Here in our own land there is prejudice some of which derives support from institutions which Are at least sem official in character. I mean specifically that there Are a number of american colleges which discriminate gravely against jewish students. In a very few cases it is done frankly. The More usual practice is to establish a so called a psychological the name of Amory or Wigglesworth is psychologically preferred to that of Jacobs or Rosengarden. Sacrifice for College. There is a tragic irony in this institution. Blanket eulogies Are probably just As fallible As Blanket indictments. And yet i think it is fair to say among those groups of students who Are avid for education who make desperate sacrifices in order to go to College there is a very High proportion of jews. And so it seems not Only cruel but silly to close or limit in any Way the enrolment of those who go to College with the greatest enthusiasm for the things which a Dave Apollon to commercialize name in movies tells editor a a ally Dave Apollony versatile jewish stage celebrity outlined his plans for the future in the motion picture world and told everything except his age in an interview in his dressing room backstage of the Circle theatre Here this week. A i intend to begin film work in Hollywood very soon a he stated a and when i will make personal appearances i want to really put on a show rather than just appear in the flesh before curious audiences. I want to commercialize my name from picture work and then if my stage shows Are not really hits ill his present show which has More than forty artists representing fifteen different nationalities has been acclaimed by critics As equal to the vanities or the follies. Apollon is a pianist of note and a wizard on the mandolin. He was born in Kiev Russia just so Many years ago and first appeared on the stage at six. He was a Soldier in the russian army and a musician in the famous russian symphony orchestra. When asked about his family an Ollon declared that they were the of Nina tors of a share the wealth. A when i started to work they began to share the wealth a he laughingly stated. Dave is not married however. In july 1921, Dave Apollon appeared in a joint recital with the late Cantor Joseph Rosenblatt. He was also featured in the opening pro Gram at radio City. Apollon has travelled in All parts of the world but has never visited Palestine. He expressed a desire to visit the jewish Homeland in the a near future. Concerning the recent economic depression the stage Star said that business men themselves and the Chambers of Commerce can and should do much More to bring Back the Prosperity of Boom Days. Business men should encourage the people to get out attend the theatre visit their displays and really bring about recovery he stated. The people must be talked into bringing Back recovery if they want it he pointed out. Apollon has made several movie shorts for Warner Brothers in Hollywood and he made a full length feature picture in England where he is a great favorite. He has also written numerous russian musical compositions l. A College is supposed to give. I am of course quite ready to adn t that certain universities must pick and choose among their applicants. There Are colleges which simply do not possess the physical capacity to take in All Comers. But if there is to be curtailment the Only fair method is to base selection upon competitive examinations. On the whole that is the general theory followed by such National institutions of learning As West Point and Annapolis. I am admitting the fact that in these training schools physical fitness is also a proper sphere affecting Choice. But As far As i know neither West Point nor Annapolis goes beyond the simple figures of medical and mental examination. Perhaps the cruellest injustice of All is the quota system which afflicts Many of our medical schools and is also beginning to raise its ugly head in Law schools As Well. Lets be sensible and realistic about this. When anybody goes to a doctor he wants the Best informed and the most capable Man he can find. When you Are sick the last thing you Are interested in is the religion of the practitioner who attends you. Indeed some of us under painful symptoms May grow a Little weary of our own religious Faith if any. And so i say that in the training of physicians and surgeons the welfare of the Community is bound up with the choosing of the Best and none but the Best for training. Here again i have no disposition to generalize. The fact that Many of the most eminent medical men in All the countries of the world Are jewish does not necessarily prove that gentiles in general Are less adept in learning the Art of Healing. A Good doctor. Again i say let skill and capacity be the test. The Good doctor is a Man who has Learned to look facts in the face to go beyond prejudice Hunch and guess. He goes to the Laboratory for exactitude in his finding. But his Springs of information Are poisoned at the source if his own medical school goes upon the wholly unscientific theory that racial heritage or religious belief makes one Man fundamentally than another. You can to prove that in any test tube. We must go Down to the very roots. It Isnit Good enough to say a Well after All such prejudice As exists in America merely extends to a few summer hotels some apartment houses certain clubs some jobs and maybe quite a number of that is a pretty poisonous list of prejudices. On such a foundation another nazi regime could be built. And certainly the very Best answer that americans May make to Adolf Hitler is to watch and observe the things he does and then turn sharply and walk As rapidly As possible in precisely the opposite names years leaders committees announced by jewish women a group president the friends of the soviet Union in Sweden have nominated Maxim Litvinoff soviet commissar for foreign affairs As a candidate for next years Nobel peace prize.
