Melvin Schlesinger was elected president of the Hammond Board of realtors. Irving Chayken was named official greeter of Hammond by mayor Edward c. Dowling. Chayken became Hammond a outstanding citizen when he recently returned his world War i French Croix de Guerre medal to general Charles Degaulle. Lester Ottenheimer jr., a member of the twin City East Chicago Board received a citation for serving in the selective service system in various capacities without compensation for ten years. An award for exceptional bravery was made during the year to top off achievements in other areas when Marvin Isaacson was honoured by the Village Board of Dolton for saving the lives of a family of four. As for congregational and organizational life the following were elected to office Norman Sachs was re elected president of Neseth Israel congregation and sol Olin was reelected president of the brotherhood. Mrs. Sydwin Barton was elected president of the sisterhood and mrs. Marvin my sick was elected president of the Parent teachers Council. Ralph Schwartz was elected president of the Junior congregation and William Fino was elected president of the youth group. Marvin Levin was elected president of Beth Al congregation. Alvin Silverman was elected president of the brotherhood and mrs. James Leopold of the sisterhood. Bruce Lynn was elected president of the youth group. Arthur Friedman was honoured by District no. 2 by Nai by Rith and elected president of by Nai by Rith Hillel foundation of Indiana. Darryl Lem was elected president of America Lodge by Nai by Rith and appointed attorney of the Calumet City school Board. Mrs. Arthur Friedman was elected president of Hammond by Nai by Rith women. Richard Friedman was elected Aleph Gogol of Martin Goldstein chapter of Aza. Ellen Arbeiter was elected president of Mickey Marcus chapter of by Nai by Rith girls. Terry Silverman was elected president of Kadima Nasheim chapter of big. Mrs. Nathan Burnstein was re elected president of the Gertrude Marcus Wallack Aid society. A1 Abrahamson was re elected chairman of the Workman Scircle. Mrs. Jack Edwards was elected president of Hammond Hadassah. Mrs. David Thorner was elected president of the Dolton women a chapter of by Nai by Rith. The congregational year also included these events Arthur Weiss a past president of Temple Beth Al received an honorary life membership in Temple Beth Al. Sam and Bertha Alpert were honoured at Neseth Israel synagogue i their Golden wedding anniversary. Or. Alpert received a citation from the mayor of Calumet City for 50 years in business. Neseth Israel sisterhood honoured rabbi and mrs. Frank d. Plotke on the 15th anniversary with the congregation a their 30th wedding anniversary and the rabbits 30th year in the Rabbinate. Rabbi Plotke was appointed to the faculty of Roosevelt College in Chicago. Mrs. Plotke wets appointed Israel affairs chairman of Central Branch National women a league of the United synagogue of Chicago and american affairs regional chairman of Hadassah.
