Today is Friday june 9, 1972 611 n. Park at. Me 4-1307 volume xxxix no. 3stown crier leadership Council by . Cohen the announcement of the $1 million Campaign to refurbish the jewish Community Center comes As a Surprise to us but we Are getting used to not being told until after the fact. We had heard about the need for an indoor swimming Pool and of course you Only need to go by the Center to see the new Tennis courts that Are being put in. But we had no idea that a Campaign for such funds was about to be launched. Since no one has briefed us on the need we feel that others in the Community a we wonder if our rabbis knew about this a might also not have known about the drive. And of course some of us May have some questions such As the fact that if anything our Community is Over supplied with facilities but very much under supplied in other areas that Are More important to our jewishness. Yet if the Community wants to Supply the funds we believe that is Well within its prerogative. We once broached the idea when we were Young and idealistic of Broadmoor opening up its facilities on certain Days to the jewish Community at Large so that those who like us want to play Golf but cannot afford to give both to the jewish welfare federation and also pay the membership and initiation fee at Broadmoor might have another option. Pay a Green fee and be permitted to play at Broadmoor but restricted to certain Days or hours when the course is More or less vacant. The same kind of program might also be made available for swimming Tennis and the other facilities at Broadmoor. But As we said this was when we were Young and perhaps revolutionary in our concepts. To get Back to the Center we Hope those who Are closer to its operation Are Correct in their belief that better and More facilities will make a difference a but a difference in what we do not know. Wed Hope that perhaps Only $975,000 of the million would be spent for the improvements and perhaps the other $25,000 be employed for strictly jewish needs such As adult jewish education giving scholarships to our High school graduates for a summer in Israel a scholarship or two that would enable a High school Grad to take the dual program which Kansas City has been following for perhaps 20-years now enrolling at Columbia University and the jewish theological Seminary at the same time. That hardly begins to touch upon what Are the real needs in our Community but that having been said we wish the Campaign Success and will give it All the space in our news columns it requests. Those israelis Are really Sharp. Even the israelis who Are not jewish our Community is learning. A Young israeli is Selling Magazine subscriptions in the City. He is a Superb Salesman and seems to concentrate on jewish Homes. There is nothing at All discreditable about his operation. He manages to announce that he is an israeli and is very Good at dropping names even of those who did not buy subscriptions from him and even of our rabbis. He is Clever enough a you already see that a so that those who think to ask him the question whether he is jewish a we Are told he easily could pass As an Oriental jew a Are told honestly no. He Sells for a legitimate National subscription firm who May or May not be aware of his tactics. Most of these firms have been under continuous scrutiny by the authorities for some of their unethical tactics. We wonder what would happen if the Young Man were to be completely honest in his approach announce that he is a moslem and say that he is calling on jewish prospects because he feels that it is important to Cement relations Between Arab and jew not Only in the United states but in Israel too. This kind of straightforward sales technique might even prove better. But As it is we feel that jews have a right to resent his tactics and although there is probably nothing that can be done about it at least this will Alert you but wont be of much Aid when he moves on to other communities.
