How Shazur Ben Gurion at Churchill funeral rabbi rules it paying homage Jerusalem to a a religious obstacle to israeli attendance at the Churchill funeral was overcome when chief rabbi Untermann ruled that the ceremony was not a funeral but an occasion for paying homage to a great Man. The ruling made it possible for president Khazar and former prime Minster Ben Gurion to attend the ceremonies in st. Paul s Cathedral. This meant a half hour walk from their hotel because of tie proscription against Riding on the Sabbath. But the two israeli mourners did not participate in the vehicular funeral procession from Westminster to the Cathedral. A special Al a1 flight arrived in London by noon on Friday permitting Khazar and Ben Gurion to pay their respects at Westminster Hall where the great War prime minister was lying in state. Another obstacle to president Khazar making the trip was overcome when Kaddish Luz speaker of tie Knesset who was on an african tour flew Back to Israel to take Over the duties of the president while Khazar was out of the country. Decision now being mad jewish bodies May stand firm on school Aid new York to a the jewish Community was digging deep this week to come up with its answer to the Johnson bal on Aid to Public education. Meetings of National jewish organizations were taking Placo almost nightly As the Best brains sought to come to terms with a Radical shift of the National government on school Aid. None of the agencies Are concerned with the Bill As such. Almost universally the organized jewish Community has favored Federal Aid to Public education. What worries the jewish leadership Are those aspects which involve Aid to parochial schools. The Board of governors of the american jewish committee met tuesday night wednesday the sessions of the anti defamation league National commissions got under Way in Washington . The rabbinical Council of America held its midwinter convention the beginning of the week and the Union of orthodox jewish congregations of America met on wednesday. Tie big meeting involving the local jewish Community relations Council from All Over the United states and the National jewish organizations excepting the a committee gets under Way sunday when the National Community relations advisory Council goes into action on the question. The joint advisory Council of the synagogue Council of America and the a crack has already sent a memorandum to the local communities asking for views on the question As a preliminary to the a crack meeting sunday. The orthodox Are veering heavily to support of the Johnson Bill while three National jewish organizations have already indicated they will testify against provisions of the Bill which i pm to violate constitutional guarantees of separation of Church and state. They Are the american jewish Congress the National Council of jewish women and the Union of american hebrew congregations i Reform i. The position of the american jewish committee seems to want to recognize the humanitarian need for Federal Aid and May be willing to Bend More than other National jewish organizations. They too however insist on the question Clearing the hurdle of Church state separation and feel that the Bill should include provision for a court decision to answer the question. The orthodox definitely seem to be changing. The Union of orthodox jewish congregations the Lay Wing of the modern orthodox and the rabbinical Council of America its rabbinical Arm Are veering towards support of the Johnson Bill. The Uorca will most Likely support the Johnson Bill and the stand of the Ria will very Likely lean in that direction but May have some reservations. In the Johnson Bill there Are three places where it is Felt the constitutional guarantees seem to be ignored. Under title i the shared time question which has traditionally been opposed by All jewish groups is officially recognized. It is termed a dual enrolment Quot in order to avoid objection from jewish and other sources which is that classes from parochial schools in Masse come to classes in the Public school on such subjects As math and science. To overcome this dual enrolment Calls for individual enrolment not by classes but seems to operate in precisely tie same Way from a practical standpoint. Shared time in vocational and Home economics classes has years of practice behind it. But in Only one school in the United states is shared time presently practice in other subjects. The orthodox and one other National organization opposed the position paper of the joint advisory Council on shared time. The orthodox seems to favor shared time. A second provision of tie Bill has to do with free text books. This is opposed in the Jac paper but the orthodox seems to favor this part of the Johnson Bill also. In title Iii of the Bill the jewish groups find additional grounds for opposition. This concerns supplementary educational centers in areas of the education system requiring enrichment and where experimentation might be carried on. The precise objection seems to be the wording of the Bill which would put parochial school agencies instead of individuals in position to exercise influence. Depending on How Strong is the stand of the jewish groups the Community May find it on opposite sides of the Fence from other religious groups in the . So far the religious bodies testifying at hearings have supported the Johnson does the Post and opinion carry More advertising now than at any time in its history the answer is simple.
