Modern Ashdod is the locale of work on a port which will open before the end of 1965, and will be the second largest in Israel in a few years. Ashdod s Harbor will serve As a Channel for the flow of goods to the Negev and for the Export of Potash and other minerals and chemicals extracted from the dead sea and the Negev. Moving Forward the Aid of funds from Israel Bonds and the world Bank work on the port at Ashdod on the Mediterranean Twenty eight Miles South of Tel Aviv is bringing about a change in the entire area. Formerly an isolated Beach Asb Dod is becoming a bustling City. The new port s Impact on Israel s foreign Trade will be of the greatest significance. With Haifa Harbor already unable at times to handle All its traffic it has become an urgent necessity to build this new deep water port on the Mediterranean to serve the nation s future needs. The port of Ashdod is expected to become a major Gateway to world Commerce and will in effect become the port of Jerusalem since it will provide easy Access to the capital City which is about 40 Miles away. In addition to its importance As a seaport Ashdod will be of strategic value in the Settle ment of the Negev where a Large proportion of Israel s population is expected to live and work in the future. Construction of factories Homes schools and shopping areas is taking place throughout Ashdod. A railway lice which will link the new City to the country s main Railroad system is being constructed and facilities Are being mapped for the tourist Trade which is anticipated in the near future. Ashdod s population is now close to 25,000, and is increasing at a rate of about 1,000 per month. It is expected that within Twenty years Ashdod will have a population of 300,000, and May Well be Israel s third largest City. At present Tel Aviv israelis largest City has a population of about 400,000, while Haifa has about 200,000 and Jerusalem 175,000. However it is the port itself which is receiving priority from the Israel government. The total Cost for the port project will be $75,000,000, of which $27,540,000 will be provided by a loan from the world Bank. The remainder is to come from Israel s development budget More than one third of which is derived from Israel Bonds. The first stage of the new port consisting primarily of Basi construction work on the Beach and the building of a completely new Harbor with massive protective breakwaters extending far out into the Mediterranean is scheduled to be completed this year. This phase of the project will require the dredging of an Entrance Channel ships Basin and six wharf berths for vessels.
