Elder Moses Broyles pastor of the second Baptist Church of this City died aug. Slat. He was a Leader amongst the coloured lambs. He was once a slave. Though he preached Christ and him crucified Here the old Man has gone to the infidel s heaven and we shall hear of him no More forever. Between b. F. Underwood and col. We have seen men die quietly and serenely who were infidels never saw one die in fear. On the contrary we have witnessed the death of several True believers who died in fright and terror Lesl their peace with god was t fully made. Friends of the Indianapolis journal Are elated at Evol uting propensities Only developed fince the Advent of brother Barnes. It has advanced to the doctrine of total depravity and a per Sonal Devil. The news and limes and Sentinel preceded it to that High Pinnacle of deduction. All will Volute up to infant damnation before their ext presidential election. A straight jacket is badly needed for one Jonathan m. Roberts who publishes a powerful sight of hog-w5sh and slush in Philadelphia. As to treatment the actual cautery should be applied to the spinal column till the column gives Way and the soft j Umpkin juice in the perforated Goard that surmount it is charred to a cinder. Roberts needs rationed medical treatment. His brain wants hardening and the Backbone of his rebellious spirit wants to be broke. But to will struggle on. The Heathen of this Craft is getting almost out of heart in Bis War against the wicked and in Defesa of the holy ministers of the gospel. As fast As he refutes one slander and restores its holy victim to the favor of his flock and to his former position in society another one is attacked perhaps a dozen Are attacked at once. In vain has he urged that the holy Ofhie of minister of the gospel is a sul Lucient refutation of wicked slander. Once enlisted in the army of the lord As a Leader of his lambs and no More sin can attach. As the rain drops Glide from the Back of a duct so sin glides from the Back of a Leader in Israel. You May know that it is the work of the wicked world Ian or of the lambs while under the wizard spell of satan and not responsible. Here is a Case in Point. It is the usual Story that the wicked like to invent and repeat. It will be seen that the Good Man will be driven from the important work of saving other people s souls Back to the irksome and superfluous business of a Shoemaker. Verily the slanderer will have much to answer for Baltimore md., aug. 30.?Rev. Charles Bently formerly a Captain in the salvation army has gotten himself into trouble in this City con sequent upon his Familiari ties with miss Emma Martin a member of his congregation. Or. Bently had been conducting a very exciting and successful revival in this City for weeks and his Fame has spread All Over the City causing quite a juror of religious Fervour. Last week however there came a change. The Young lady to whom Bentley was so much attached became a Mother a scene followed and Bently acknowledging that the child was his agreed to marry the girl in Case nothing further was said about the matter. The affair caused a great stir in the Church and it is probable that or. Bently will be deprived of his License to preach. He said this morning Quot i know that i can not preach with this disgrace upon me and i shall have to return to my Quot what Trade were you engaged in before turning your attention to evangelism Quot Quot of i was in three trades. One of them was shoemaking and i guess i la adopt one or other of the the lord of hosts. The kingdom of heaven is not a Republic it is a kingly government. The Quot lord of hosts Quot is the King. Before time was he was. He was not elected to office. There was nobody to vote for him in the beginning. He is King by virtue of priority of existence lie is the Quot oldest we get our knowledge of god and the kingdom of heaven from our Quot knowing fellow men in this country. The Quot lord of hosts Quot who rules the kingdom of heaven has a great Deal of property in this country and Many agents to manage it. His kingdom is far from Here however. Its exact location has not been accurately made out. The King that rules it has never visited the United states of America. We hear much of him and h s country but the descriptions Are vague. We can find no person who has that kingdom though plenty of people Cash for nothing that we can t see and get a Good title for and nothing that requires death As a preliminary to Eliza tion. Riv. Marlatt for two years pastor of the m. A Church at Seymour goes now to the Connersville District. We suspect that the Rev. Marlatt imbibed some lessons and Good ones from the Seymour times while serving his master at that place. He is a Well meaning and moral Many a Good Man in spite of his religion that holds it just to Burn men in fire to All eternity for inability to believe god a person Christ the son of that person and Mary the Mother of that Christ a Virgin notwithstanding her motherhood and that this person called god wrote the priest Lystash called the holy Bible. Want s John Oast into the sea. Brother Joel Brown of it. Healthy Ohio thinks if the Silver dollars had been put into a big bag and the bag tied to John Sherman s neck and both cast into the sea leaving the people the fractional currency he destroyed that it would have been better for the country. But Johnny was t alone to blame. A ear ready convenient for the vast business conducted through the mails is a Long Felt want and it will yet be filled. Haste tie Day. Brother Abe. There is a Well grounded suspicion Llinat brother Abe i Uford the horse racing Christian of Kentucky has partially fallen from Grace. Brother Barnes will have to re anoint the Able Abe. He swears quite too viciously. The other Day hut it May be a lie invented by some wicked world Ian he called a Small coloured boy who had held Bis coat half a Day a did scoundrel for charging him a Quarter for his trouble. This is the language of the Man who knows not god or at least the Man who denies him if he knows him. If brother Abe will come Over Here we will Call brother Barnes into the Den. Then we three kentuckians for the Heathen lived so Long in Kentucky and new Jersey that he claims , with ail that the name implies in both states a then we three kentuckians will Call upon flying Tom a sorrel Colt of Kentucky lineage that we keep close by to tantalize the horsemen of the Hoosier capital and upon that Quot Hoss Quot shall brother Abe after being freshly oiled by brother Barnes renew his l ledges to the lord and re swear allegiance to the Church of latter Day saints of the lord Jesus Christ. Liberalism. What is meant by this term now so often used and so generally commended is it merely the opposite of the spirit which built the Yuqiu Sitison and allowed no Freedom except in the line of its own thought or is it a re baptism of an ancient people a Nom do Guerre assumed by a Prol philosophy under which to wage a bitter warfare against truths Long held As Cardinal inhuman thought and especially those truths so called which Appeal to the moral nature of Man if the first is the True meaning of the term As so flippantly used in the present Day we unhesitatingly swear allegiance at its altar but if the second we Call a halt. And there Are Many things which incline us to the latter opinion and cause us to inquire seriously what meant by those who advocate Quot liberalism Quot and insist upon Radical changes in the established order of things own posses ions there and claim to Bayer veral queries have Long knocked at titles Clear. The door of our lips among others this the von a unions that people claim in is liberalism really Liberal if so Why e kingdom of heaven Cost the kingdoms it that the Church and Quot ii v or Rpp Iii via 1 a up Amarii u Airl to Iii Thomas on the Wing. From received at the Den it is inferred that Tom Atkinson is on the Wing and must have been in Kansas City or thereabouts recently. Thomas always supplies the Den with documents when on his travels and if an unsuspecting Man can be lured on Board the train Thomas lures him on mostly paying the fare himself when such action seems charitable or is necessary to trap the victim. Once on Board it is our duty to keep the deceived voyager Safe and to land him in the infidel s kingdom where the inhabitants have nothing at All to do but sleep. We commend Thomas to All manner of people everywhere a the embodiment of Honor and the soul of chivalry. If not three. Rev. Barnes said in one of his sermons that Indianapolis boasted of two if not three infidel papers alluding of course to the people the review and the Herald. Well ii does look that Way. The of Earth a Good Deal of Money and trouble. People get the kingdoms of Earth and heaven mixed in their minds if not in fact. The probability is that they Are quite distinct and should be separately considered. People while Here should concern themselves exclusively about their possessions Here. They should t be spending time and Money in improving their heavenly Sions. That can be Best attended to after the owners visit them which by the Way they never do till they surrender their possessions Here. A Man s in the. Kingdom of heaven Are of mighty Small account to him so Long As he stays in the United states of America great Britan or Ireland. While he is a citizen of the United states there is no sense in his trying to acquire possessions in any kingdom lying beyond Quot its Quot limits and there Are several thus situated besides the kingdom of heaven As for instance the states of Delaware new Jersey and Kentucky. When a Man goes to his foreign possessions and leaves those of his native country then it is time enough for him to begin to care for those Possession. He will have ample time on his hands if accounts Are True. To be fussing and fretting about possessions in the kingdom of heaven while residing in any one of the kingdoms or republics of Earth is to the last degree unwise and for various and obvious reasons. There is a Strong probability that titles to property in the Quot lords Quot kingdom May prove defective. It is by no Means certain that the owner can find his Quot possessions Quot or the kingdom they Are in even after he starts on his journey in quest of them. He May fall asleep and forget to Wake or there May be no such country kingdom lord or possessions in existence. It must be borne in mind that the evidence on All these Points is Provo kingly unsatisfactory. Titles to possessions in Quot that better land Quot though coming pretty High reach us through the hands of brokers and auctioneers. The agents that dispose of them Are not in Possession of credentials that would Bear inspection. They would be rejected by a court of Justice for Lack of the signature and Seal of the principal proprietor or potentate delegating a Kier of attorney to the agent with Date of Issue and the name of the City or country where the business was transacted. All these details have been Provo kingly neglected by the agents who Are doing business for the Quot lord of it is True these retail dealers in houses built without hands in Gold paved streets in wings and harps and other articles said to be very costly and to contribute greatly to the purchasers Comfort in that country cite an old Book in which they claim that the will of their employer is recorded. This Book written by this Quot lord of hosts Quot and the proprietor of the commodities dealt in by his agents and auctioneers creates them and details the methods they shall adopt in disposing of the property or the promises rather and managing the vast interests entrusted to them. But the Book is without Date or proper authentication. It has been passing through the hands of mortal men not sworn to preserve it in its original character and it has been revised re vamped and re written thousands of times by interested parties and it is not now to be trusted. On the whole it seems that there Are no agents properly authorized to dispose of possessions in the kingdom of heaven and that our knowledge of that country is not exact enough to justify investment. The conclusion is if any of us should Ever go to that country that it will be time enough to attend to the business pertaining thereto when we get there and find it desirable or con Valuent to remain. And further that while we Are Here we had Best attend strictly to the duties and business pertaining to this land and Liis life buy nothing of auctioneers nothing that we can t pay never receives a pleasant word from this imperious spirit and further Ifa Uch changes Are necessary in the social and political world Why must changes uniformly begin with those things which Many hold sacred and which tie great majority , to the least less now if liberalism gave Only partial attention to the Church pointing out in exact phraseology Lier errors so that All might see not indulging in maudlin curses like loafers but like philosophers did cussing her weaknesses without partiality liberalism should look after the errors of human philosophy the jarring and contentions of so called scientific men and fail not to administer correction to the amphibian who swim in the cesspool of politics if in a word this new goddess were Only soft on every Side we would Quot toss our ready Cap to the air Quot crying All Hail Quot liberalism Quot but if not greatly mistaken we have thought that her batteries never front but one Way. They never Thunder save against the Church. At the very Best As it appears from our standpoint liberalism can Only mean that since All human opinions Are imperfect it matters Little which we believe and since the rest of the world is equally far wrong it is of no importance what they believe or whether they have any formulated Creed or theory at All. This is putting the very Mildest meaning possible upon liberalism in its modern manifestations. And if either Assumption is Correct then Are we As Well As Many others very far wrong. We rejoice however to be found in Good company. Confessedly there is truth somewhere and the amount of truth which enters into the character building of society will determine the value of the completed work. Even an approximation of truth or an error which harmless in itself Points toward the truth is better a every Way better a than to hold nothing. All Cliar Acter is not Only conditioned upon belief Creed or opinion but is Only possible As the result of that belief. If a Man could be found without a Creed philosophic religious political held in the consciousness if not formulated in the vernacular such a Man would be an inferior sort of Jelly fish deprived of its tentacles and possessing Only a maw. Opinions beliefs Are the Bone of the Cliar Acter. Other things May constitute the tissues and careless fancies May throb along the arterial system but these constitute the Bone. No Man can stand erect before the world without a Creed. More than this the character of the opinions will determine the character of the Man. As Well say that the Tiger will hold its Bloodthirsty disposition and be a fit playmate for the children to say that a Man May hold unclean and pestilential opinions Aud not be in that measure unfit for the society of the pure. What a Man believes he is. The Sioux Brave believes he May Scalp his helpless victim with propriety and he does it the Liberal that he May with charming liberality Tomahawk the Christian and he does it. And the firmness with which opinions Are held shows itself in the character. The Roundhead or Puritan might justly be criticised for Many errs and imperfections but those who met them on the Field or the forum never had cause to accuse them of weakness. They were Strong because they fed on Strong meat and no grander men have Ever figured in the history of America than these same puritans. A soft yielding nature that holds All opinions of equal value and believes nothing firmly can never truly possess character. Like the Chameleon he May be affected by his surroundings until he shows a sympathy of color but character he has none. The Wise Man will not therefore be careless As to the magnitude of his Creed nor indifferent As to the nature of the commandments in his decalogue and to cannot As a philosopher and philanthropist be More than theoretically Quot Liberal Quot with reference to the of others. If really an honest Man he must have Confidence not merely in the honesty with which he holds his Creed but likewise in the adaptation of that Creed to the needs of society. So he must present to society the truth As he holds it and insist upon its acceptance of that truth. He must be an apostle of the revelation he has received. It appears therefore from these and other considerations that Quot liberalism Quot on this View is an impossibility and the Only form in which it could be wisely held would be As a Broad Charity which looks with compassion upon the ignorance and weakness of the world and strives with tender hand to eliminate the false and bring into the life the germs of the Quot True the Beautiful and the but if that be All common decency demands the first and christianity has always proposed the second Quot there is on Lar one resource left us in this investigation and that is since we cannot define liberalism satisfactorily in the abstract to bunt for it in the icon Crete. We ask therefore fur specimens of this order for examination and not our Cabinet. We have been so unfortunate As not. To meet with Many of this Genus. Who Are the leading liberals of the age ? what Are they now doing and what have their progenitors done for society does the world now gather any fruit from Trees they have planted have they built any colleges hospitals asylums for the wretched of Earth ? if they Are Good and their Mission Good let them show their Good works in the con Crete. What have they done ? we honestly ask for information for All have an interest in the truth. Let therefore come to the front and Quot a Plain unvarnished tale deliver Quot of her genealogy her philosophy her achievements and her City journal August 27th. The above is pertinent in Many Points. It must be admitted that Quot liberals Quot is not a very appropriate name for the infidels who Are demanding to be placed on an Equality As citizens with professed . These people under the name of Quot liberals Quot demand that the shall be taxed. They demand that religion shall be eliminated from t if Public schools. They demand that prayers to an alleged god shall not he paid fur out of the Public Treasury. They demand the abolition of Tost oaths of. Which belief is the base. They demand that orthography Reading writing &c., shall be taught in the Public schools and not Bible religion. They War upon the Church that has filled the world with strife and drenched it in human blood. They hate it for this. But those infidels Are not on the contrary they Are As illiberal As the Meriest priest. They Are illiberal with the Church More illiberal with one another and have proved their incapacity to agree on any fixed belief or line of action or to organize for any purpose. We speak of the people who Call themselves there Are men who claim to be atheists materialists infidels who Are not making much clamor but who Are full of Charity and Are tolerant. They do not fall out with people who disagree with them in belief. They see the hypocrisies the weaknesses the bigotry and the uselessness of the Church in the main but Are not Blind to the sincerity of purpose and the purity of life of professed Christian people. These infidel Phi Leaphers Are men of pure lives a men who look More in pity and sorrow than in anger on the Short comings the false beliefs and the follies of their fellow men. If men can be reasoned or ridiculed Good Nat redly out of false beliefs and useless customs that Cost much Money and time and that have no warrant in reason or common sense it is Well. But for the Quot Liberal Quot to wage an angry warfare upon his fellow Man for doing and believing what seems to him absurd and foolish is illiberal instead of Liberal and very much lacking in Charity. The True infidel is generally a Good Man. His wish is for the welfare of his fellow men and he tries to promote their Well being to the extent of his ability. In All Ages have the infidels to christianity been noted far their goodness and their exalted character. If they have not built colleges and Chanty hospitals in the name of infidelity they have been generous contributors to them and suffered christianity to have the credit and control of them. Under the name of Quot liberalism Quot All the isms that oppose the Church seem to have ranged themselves All shades of people with hobbies and unbalanced Heads. Many of these liberals Are intensely intolerant of each other s beliefs. A Man Worth the other Day an old subscriber a Liberal ordered two copies of the age that he was paying for stopped because some telegraphic reports that he did t relish were copied into the paper. This is a Sample of your Quot liberals Quot intolerance is frequently the Rule and liberalism the exception with Quot liberals Quot As Well As with Church people. Hence it is concluded that the name Quot Liberal Quot is singularly inappropriate and inapplicable to the people who Are sailing under it. Let us who go about the business of opposing wickedness double dealing immorality and Dishonour whether inside or outside of the Church who hate hypocrisy in a Quot Liberal Quot As Well As in a christians who desire to do Good in the world and to give every Man credit for the Good that is in him regardless of his belief or unbelief who have Charity for All and malice for none Call ourselves infidels and atheists and be done with it. Liberal is a name invented to soften the word infidel. Until recently few men dare Call themselves infidels fewer still dare be known As atheists. Now Many of us glory in these Cognomen. It is True we can t know anything beyond this life. But All manner of evidence to prove the existence of a personal god or an intelligent ruler of the uni Verra of any kind is so conspicuously absent that the non existence of such is Clear to our reason. Hence we Are atheists and Don t care who knows it. But we Are tolerant. Atheists never burned anybody at the stake for assert ing belief in a god. Atheists did t invent the thumb screw and the rack the Iron Collar the inquisition. Believers in god invented All these and they have burned their thousands not for denying god merely for no Man dared deny god till infidelity got so far on top As to grasp the sword and take the savagery out of christianity but for a matter of dispute whether a priest could convert sour wine into the actual blood of Christ and stale bread into his actual Bone and body. If infidels As a class have not built charities they have not charred the flesh of their Fellows. If they have thrown stones at the myths they have not led men to the stake. The infidel record is Good and there is plenty of Good work for infidels to do. Their work to Day is re Modding the Church. They have already eliminated hell and a wrathful god from the Church. No preacher dares to stand up and preach eternal torture and the vengence of a wrathful god to an intelligent audience to Day. What hns driven savagery from the pulpit All know the reasoning and ridicule of the infidels have driven it from the land. Let our intelligent contemporary Talce Comfort in the knowledge that infidelity has done much Good work in the past and that it has definite work and plenty of it still on hand. It has Aims and they Are charitable objects and they Are elevating. Its wish is to make men Wise sensible truthful healthful Happy and it covers with the Broad Mantle of Charity the inherited Hopes and fears of the multitude. The National prohibition party. This organization held a convention in Chicago the latter part of August. The representation was pretty Large from All parts of the country. The following platform was adopted All questions not of a National character belong to the party within the several states and territories to define its views and policy and action respecting them not inconsistent with this National platform. We declare in favor of the following National principles and measures to be incorporated in the National Constitution and enforced by Congress and the government first the prohibition As Public crimes of the importation exportation manufacture Sale and Supply and taxation of All alcoholic beverages. Second the prohibition tax License regulation or Legal Sanction in any form of them or any other Public crimes. Third civil and political and enfranchisement of women. This so far As it concerns the states severally is remitted to the party in those states. Fourth the abolition of executive judicial and legislative patronage the selection of All officers by the j eople so far As practicable and civil service Reform in other appointments. Sixth the abolition of sinecure Aud offices. Seventh the Universal and enforced education of the youth of the nation including instruction in regard to the effect of alcohol upon the human system with ample provision for the support of an adequate and efficient system of free Public schools in All the states and territories. Eighth the preservation of Public lands for Homes for the people and their division in limited portions to actual settlers Only. Ninth the abolition of monopolies class legislation and special privileges from the government As injurious to the equal rights of citizens. Tenth the control of railroads and other corporations to prevent abuses of Power and protect the interests of labor and Commerce. It is possible that the convention Quot bit Oil Quot More than it can chaw Quot for considerable time to come. Reformers Are Apt to Lay off too much land. If a body of men attempt to Correct All the abuses and evils known at one fell swoop the chances Are that they will fall somewhat Short of expectation. But if they grasp but one social or political Serpent at a time they May strangle them in detail. This grasping to Reform abuses not in the line of their legitimate work the Effort to Reform All abuses and to abolish All offensive statues was the impediment that wrecked the Liberal train just after it was under Way with a Good head of steam on. Was Jesus divine. This is a pamphlet of 82 Large pages by m. B. Craven written in his usual cogent style. It is published by Barclay amp co., Rhi Ladelphia and is for Eale by Liberal Book dealers generally. The Price is not indicated in the copy received.
