love baskets offered through churches to assist needy by Patrick Omalley Gazette staff writer thanks to the generosity of count less volunteers and contributors involved with a special program Iri in Diana county hundreds of needy families dont have to worry about having an empty dinner table Christ Mas Day for the past 25 years love Basket has provided meals for those less fortunate during the holidays and this Christmas 400 families will receive donations of food at 10 local churches said Dan Jones a director of the program but according to Jones who along with his wife Kathy store the collected food in a building they own in in Diana before distributing it to the churches the purpose of love Bas Ket is much greater than just giving families food our goal is to be an outreach for the churches which is Why we dont distribute it to the Public our said Jones modestly Jones has been involved with the program since 1988 and took Over distribution five years ago we give the food to the churches in bulk they do More than i the program was started by the late Virgil Vaughn and his wife Vir after they saw a need to help those less fortunate Virginia sell volunteers for love Basket since then it has grown because of the gracious volunteerism of those in the Community said Kathy Jones its people through the Grace of god she said year food and Money is donated at local churches families began Friday at Grace United methodist Church in Indiana which prepares love baskets for 162 families the most at any one of the 10 churches each of the churches provides food for families in different ways some help Supply members at their individual Church other churches have Regis radon in mid november Grace United methodist Church had three registration Days for families to sign up for a love Basket Many of them were referred by different agencies or by word of Mouth according to de Scott a coordinator for the pro Gram at the Church thursday night the love baskets were prepared at the Church by approximately 40 members before families picked them up Friday afternoon said Scott v because of the help of Many volunteers Scott said the were Able to fill each of the 162 baskets with at Grace Spaghetti with sauce Peanut butter and Jelly stove top stuffing cookies and apples Are added he said there mation about the Church to go along with the Bible encouraging recipients to attend
