recently announced As one of the SO recipients of a fellowship to attend the General Electric science program to be given at Case Institute of Technol ogy this summer Mr Myers a 4JP56 graduate of State Teachers College Indiana has been teach ing at Turkeyfoot School for three years The program for secondary school physics and chemistry teachers is made possible by the General Electric educational and charitable fund It is designed to provide a new approach to the basic concepts and recent develop ments In science Upon his return schtfol in the fall thefellow will thus reflect this new knowl edge and will be more likely to awaken scientific ambition in the minds of his students Courses Offered carry credit applicable to gidutte work and have been designed to provide depli tf Mofmtttdn In Physics and Chemistry In addition to normal classroom work the bfe supple mented by trips to research labor atories of General Electric lamp division headquarters at Nela Park in Cleveland for lectures conferences and inspectiontrips The fellowship provide for tui tion board and lodging and travel allowance to and from Meals will be in Tom linson Hall and fellows will be houses in one of the new dormi tories on the Case campus On twoevenings after recreation at Nela Camp employees recreation camp at Nela Park the fellows will be dinner guests of the Gener al Electric Johnson of Texas appeared today to hold the key to Senate action on Lewis Strauss nomination to be sec retary of commerce Senate debate will not begin next week W Strauss nomination submitted by president Eisenhower last Jan 17 through the Senate Commerce Committee Tuesday by narrowest possible margin The 98 vote in favor of Senate confirmation was followed by sug gestions from Sens Clafr Engle DCalif and Stephen M Young DOhio that Eisenhower should withdraw Strauss nomination f White House Press Secretary ames C Hagerty called the sug gestion ridiculous Strauss him self said he was grateful for the majority committee vote in his favor While the vote fell slightly short of what Strauss supporters had hoped for Senate Republican Leader Everett M Dirksen of Illinois told newsmen he still thinks the nomination will be con Dirksen said however he will have to do some missionary ivbrk among Democratic sena tors He indicated that he hoped to find additional votes among Southern Democrats Sen Harry F Byrd a strong supporter by Strauss said in a separate interview that he expects most of the Southerners to vote for confirmation If enough M them do victory for Strauss will be assured But Sen Clinton P Anderson who spearheaded the opposition said support of Strauss dwindled within the committee during longdrawnout hear ings He predicted opposition would continue to grow
