Instruction Departj ment tpday suggested thatj priority be given in state naneial aid for replacing school buildings considered j fire hazards The suggestion came from Dr Ralph Swan deputy public in struction superintendent at a Sen ate committee hearing on the re cent crash drive against Pennsyl vania school buildings considered unsafe from fire and other haz ards Dr Swan said his department would submit legislation that would grant top priority on State School Building Authority funds for construction of buildings to re JpIace ones structurally unfit for jafety modifications i in each case Dr Swan pointed out the priority would be granted only if tho school district proved that it was unable to house the school children in any other1 building I However Ihe School Building Authority now has no funds andi all the legislative action on prior ities would hinge on appropria fjtions to the authority by the cur rent legislature William L Batt Jr labor and industry secretary told the com mittee his department has ordered 712 Pennsylvania schools to make chunges that would bring them within state safety regulations Of this number he said only 150 schools have been deemed in need of
