Arts editor an unusual exhibit Greene and Greene the architecture and related designs of Charles Sumner Greene and i Henry Mather Greene 1894-1934" will open in los Angeles municipal Art 4800 Hollywood blvd. The City of los Angeles was awarded a Grant from the National endow for the arts for the exhibition a joint of the los Angeles municipal arts Yaj department and the us school of Archi lecture and Fine arts. The recent International interest in the i and crafts movement in America has attention on the work of Greene and Greene who broke from the victorian past to raise american architecture to a new level. Randell l. Makinson curator of the Gamble House in Pasadena and a member of the staff of us school of architecture and Fine arts is exhibition director. Origi Nal plans drawings Watercolour sketches. Furniture leaded Glass lighting fixtures hardware Garden pottery and Archive and contemporary color and Black and White photographs comprise the exhibit. Born in Brighton Ohio the Greene Brothers were the sons of Thomas Sumner Greene and Lelia Ariana Greene. They attended Calvin Woodward s manual training High school in St. Louis the first school of its kind in America. Woodward strongly influenced by John Rusman and William Morris introduced the concept of the dignity of craftsmanship and the Philo sophies of the arts and crafts movement to the United states. Through him the greenes Learned the fundamentals of materials tools and workmanship that be came the basis of their work. The Brothers enrolled in the architectural curriculum at Massachusetts in 1888 but feeling frustrated by training that they considered stifling to their creative ideas they left in 1891 to apprentice them selves to various architects. Then in 1893 they visited their parents in Pasadena were fascinated with California life land scape missions and Freedom from tradition. When they got a commission to design a Small House in Pasadena they decided to stay on the West coast. They became enormously successful. Wood was their primary medium. Working with craftsmen that they themselves trained they explored new ways to use Wood. Their designs were bold relaxed with hints of the Orient the Swiss Alps and the missions of California.
