Daily News, The (Newspaper) - October 29, 1931, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania American Castaways Are Found On Tropical Island Washington Oct Three American castaways wereenroute to Balboa C Z today from tiny tropical Cocos Island 500 out in the Pacific from Panama where they had lived for the last six months on iish wild pigs and cocoanuts a modern sequel to Defoes Robinson Crusoe Clad ouly in loin cloths the modern Robinson Crusoes Earl Palliser of San Diego Calif paul Stachwick of Hurson s D and Gordon Brawner of Springfield 111 were rescued last night by the United States gunboat Sacra mento The men had sailed last spring from San Diego In the yawl Wes Wind and had long been though to have perished Details of the rescue and of the castaways experiences on the isl and were relayed to the Navy de partment from the Sacramento Commander G H Bowdey o Die Sacramento reported that the three appeared to be In good phys ical condition They had kept themselves supplied with food with the aidof guns and fishing gear saved when their yawl was wrecked off the island Their clothing had gradually diminished until in the end they were reduced to nothing but loin cloths The Sacramento was dispatched to the rescue of the men Sunday after Julius Pleischman of Cincin nati cruising past the island re ported he had discovered the wrecked West Wind but that he could not find the men themselves Cocos island with Its hidden pirate hoard rates hardly a speck even on the larger maps but of the island itself there is many a rare and musty chart Each has its lone palm tree and coral ledge and the southsouthwest bearing you climb the elevenhun dred paces that lead you to the cave and dig here But like all the scattered repos itories of dishonest gold Cocos hides its treasure well By this time over a hundred years of ical rain have fallen since a guilty crew fleeing from Callao Peru landed there quarreled buried their treasure drew their charts or fought and died Back in the days when the army of independence was fiercely fight ing the Spanish overlord Lima fell to the rebel Peruvian patriots But for greater safety all public treasurers of gold and silver coin dating back to Pizarro all the great private collections of plate all the jewels and trinkets of the colonial dames were loaded on a Bhip in Callao Bay ship had a sliphawser on its anchor and instructions to await develop ments But the captain and crew had ideas of their own When morn ing came Lima was still in the hands of the patriots but their treasures had vanished The pirates made for Cocos De termined not to get caught with the loot they cached the treasure in a cave of he mountain that forms the island Of all who sailed away each had a copy of that chart that should guide him back to the treasure These charts genuine and spurious perennially coma to light THE DAiLY NEWS HUNTINCDON PA Morkets LAMCASTKtt LIVESTOCK Market Beet Steers showing sTlesYn undertoil at close some isfln0 fJd
