He crouched called his signals took the snap from Center Doug Pruitt and followed Pruitt a precision Block into the end zone for the first score in an eventual 17-0 Andrews Victory. Routine perhaps. But it might also have marked a turning Point for a Raider team that has at alternate times looked i a awesome and but inept it was Dorsetti a first touchdown As Field general of the red Raider offence and was the first from Andrews new formation the raiders started the season from the i Tig ers tank anchors line the dumb lineman Gary Runyon. Image is not for Randleman in fact the senior Tiger tackle listed the ability to think quickly As the number one asset for a Good offensive lineman. A you have to be Able to think and recognize the defense you re playing against Runyon said. A then react to it. Of course you also have to be aggressive. You get the jump on the defensive Man by knowing the count but you pc got to hit pm hard to do a Good Runyon and the rest of the Tiger lineman earned the Praise of coach Charlie Gregory with their outstanding play against Southern Guilford in the tigers 31-0 win. A your offensive line did a super said Gregory. A their pass Protection was Good. And they opened up some holes. They deserve a lot of Ragsdale tight end Alan Johnson Tiger senior mainstay for defending 3a champs photo by Sonny Mody Oci Cohol ulily amp on Fok outside the locker room credit is something lineman Don t often get a not that it bothers Runyon that his work is sometimes overlooked. A i d just As soon do my Job and let someone else get the attention Quot he commented. A a Guy like Kenny Laughlin Randleman running Back deserves the Praise. Any kind of Hole will Spring him Loose he s a real inspiration to the team. Our other backs. Carl Davis and Willie Mcdonald Are Good Runyon who is described by Gregory As a one of the Best lineman in the conference Quot plays the tackle spot both ways for the tigers. He moved there this season after playing Center and nos guard in 1973. A my brother Ricky played tackle last year and he went Over a lot of his plays with me when i was at Center Quot Runyon explained a so it Wasny tall that big a change Quot some things have changed drastically for the tigers since last year. In 1973 at this time Randleman was struggling to get its first Central Carolina conference Victory the tigers Are currently tied for the top spot in the acc with West Davidson. The two teams meet this Friday at Randleman. A last year when we lost the first game to Western Guilford it really Hurt us Quot Runyon commented. A this year we lost but we did no to get Down. The team has a better attitude. The East game gave us a big boost too. Everybody came to life after we won it was what we had been practising for. We know now that if we can beat West and then keep playing Well we can win the one reason for the change in Outlook at Randleman was an All out Effort by Gregory and his staff to make football attractive to the Tiger students. After an off year in football turnout the Veteran Randleman coach put Many Spring and summer hours into fixing up the so a tigers on scr Gary Runyon. Tiger tackle formation but last week head coach John Morris scrapped it for a split Backfield alignment with a flanker. A i like the new Dorsett said a i think it makes things easier As far As the plays go. As for me. The things i do Are still pretty much the the switch was designed to take More advantage of the outside Speed of running backs Charlie Williams and ted Brown. The hanker gives Dorsett an extra passing target too. Dorsetti a development As quarterback of the raiders holds a great Deal of bearing on the conference race. He s come a Long Way since the opening game and the coaches figure hell improve More. A its a whole lot of responsibility Quot the 5-11, 140-Pound Junior admitted but it s a lot of fun. Too. I enjoy being on this team and i want to do the Job at Dorsetti a statistics for the season Are modest. He s completed 20 of 47 attempts for 240 Yards. If there s a flaw it s in interceptions where seven of his aerials have been picked off. Five by Goldsboro a week ago. A passing is definitely what i need to work on a he smiled a and Well Start working on that monday. We did t have much time to work on passing this week after putting in the new formation. But we be got the running game Down Pat Dorsett sees the West Forsyth Victory As an important one for the raiders and not Only from the standpoint of being 1-0 in the conference. A this was an important game for us Quot he noted a because we started putting if Mike Dorsett. Raider bit together As a team. We be been kind of playing As individuals in some of the other games but i think we be gotten it together now. It shows we ran do the Job when we get it together. A we wanted to win it too because it would put it ahead and that s where we want to be. We know everybody is shooting for us. It was a big win for me too because of this being my first year on the Morris agreed that the West Forsyth Triumph was the raiders Best Overall Effort of the year but is confident the team will continue to improve a we certainly expected to be ragged on offence and we were Quot he said. A we did t have much Success with our trap plays and we Hope to be stronger inside. We did no to throw much because we had t been Able to work much on passing. We used three flankers Ray Taylor Roger Kennedy and Ricky Marsh. About equally but they were carrying plays in. Next week we should be much problems Are real for Brown bulldog team by Winn Baldwin special to the Enterprise Thomasville Thomasville head football coach Allen Brown figured on having real problems rebuilding the offensive line which led the Way to a South Piedmont conference championship last season. Friday night was an example of what the bulldog Mentor dreaded three previous games gave the coach cause for jubilation. Psych up tactics not for Central s Palmer by Vicki White Enterprise sports writer Mike Palmer likes to sit and think. What does he like to think about winning. A before a game. I try not to worry about what might says the 175 Pound senior Back. A i try to stay Cain instead of getting ail worked Palmer s strategy has worked so far. He is leading scorer for Central Davidson scoring six touchdowns in five games a your single Wing offence has been the key for us Quot Palmer remarks. A it s a real Power offence and other teams have trouble defending against it. A coach it John i Doby told us it would take a couple of games to get used to running it Quot he continued a we lost our first two games but now we be adjusted to it and we Haven t lost this is Dobys first year As spartan coach. A everyone likes him Quot Palmer says of Doby. A the s like one of us. We All want to win for him. A i think he a made a big difference for our team. Last year we Only won three games but we re a lot better than that with the single Wing offence. Palmer runs the Ball mostly off tackle. A i like the single Wing because i like to run the Ball Quot admits Palmer who is in his third year on the varsity squad baseball is another Palmer interest. He has played Centerfield for the spartans for the past three seasons and is looking Forward to his fourth. But football is his main interest. Especially spartan football. A we took those two games coach Doby said we d need for adjusting and now we have Confidence in the play and in ourselves a continued Palmer. A your offensive line is Tough and our defense is doing All right too. A a we be put everything together now and even though there Are other Tough teams in the acc i think we re going to win Palmer has t made any definite plans concerning College although he thinks he would enjoy playing College football too. Right now he is More interested in playing fullback on Central s offensive squad and linebacker on its defensive unit. And in winning. A we win As a team and we lost As a team a Brown said after the 29-18 loss to conference foe Statesville. A we had inconsistency on defense and offence. We coaches made some mistakes and you have to give Statesville credit for playing a Good game a he added. Brown faced the problem of replacing members of the offensive line which boasted of Only one Junior and three All conference players. Joey Henderson is the Only member of last years line returning this season. A we figured on having some real problems but a lot of kids came on Strong and it was not an overnight process a Brown explained. A the Guys we have now Are dedicated. They made themselves in the off season and jelled during pre season practice Quot the coach noted. A of All the different units we had working the often Sive uneven were the most diligent in the off season training programs a Brown beamed. Brown ran Down the roster Charles Tillman was a Junior on the Jayvee team last season and at 163 Pound the tackle is smaller thar most of his opponents but a the s a hard worker and a big help to Brown said Craig Phifer holds the left guard position although i has played almost every position on the offensive line Phifer was a starter in five games last season. The bulldogs have to it players who can hold Down the Center position. Brant be. Problems on so by Howard haves Enterprise staff writer Jamestown every profession group or sporting learn has its Unsung heroes and the sport of High school football is no exception every week to watchers and the Follower of the sports Section hear the praises Sung of a quarterback that could beat George Washington a throw across the Potomac River a halfback that is faster than a speeding Bullet while zigzagging his Way through a Maze of tacklers or the halfback that charges through a line like the Light brigade w hat most people Overlook is the tact that there Are u men from a team on the Field at any one time and any accomplishment an individual attains is through a team Effort. One such Unsung hero on the Ragsdale football team is senior tight end Alan Johnson perhaps he is even less heard of because he plays on the Ragsdale team. Coach Richard Kemp has a reputation of going to the pass Only As a last resort. Kemp said of Johnson a the has started in 28 of 31 varsity games in the past three years and i Don t think his name has Ever appeared in the paper As tight end one of Johnson s assignments is a pass receiver but As earlier stated he gets Little Opportunity at the Job in the past three years he has caught Only nine passes including one in Friday s 28-7 Victory Over Southern Alamance. He is most often used As a key Blocker when the halfback goes wide on the around end run Johnson throws the first Block on the line. A Well Johnson was partly responsible for them a Johnson said a i like the tight end position because it gives me a Chance to still get my hands on the Ball and the extra Chance at blocking on key plays. A i played quarterback on the Junior varsity team and liked that but i have played tight end the past three years Quot Johnson says he likes football because it is fun to be a part of a team. You have to work hard but it is satisfying to know that the work pays off with a win Quot according to Johnson a its not difficult to take when i done to get any Public attention.
