Also High Point Industrial plants have bought thousands of dozens of the heavier or warehouse Type brooms. Actually the Lions annual Broom sales originated Here in High Point. The Guilford industries for the Blind inc., which later changed to the industries for the Blind inc., had been started in a Small Way in Greensboro. A number of Blind and visually handicapped persons from the county had been employed and were being trained to operate the machines and do other jobs. The Little shop had proven the that Blind and visually handicapped people could work and make brooms. It was soon discovered that manufacturing a product was Only part of the whole Story and that the product chiefly Broom Corn stick brooms had to be marketed. One of the men associated with the industries for the Blind inc., and a resident of High Point approached the High Point Lions club about the possibility of conducting a Broom Sale. This Man was Roy Carr a member of the club. The discussion hinged about two Points one was that the club would realize a profit. The second Point of interest was that it would allow the shop to continue operating and the employees would continue receiving a pay Check the Broom Sale project proved successful for the High Point club and soon other clubs about the state were encouraged to conduct annual sales. Items not made by the industries for the Blind in Greensboro Are purchased from other Blind and visually handicapped operated shops in other states. A Broom has been said to be the most useful item about the House even with the Advent of household carpeting nearly every household has one or More brooms. Some women claim they no longer have need for a stick Broom but they usually buy one and stand it up in the Utility closet alongside the one they bought the year before. The need for brooms has been recognized for a Long time and the first brooms were made from thorny Bushes. Later a a sprouts or a a Twiggs were tied to a stick. Following the discovery of Broom Corn in America the tall slender stems with Long seed Heads a Tough grass was used for brooms. Broom Corn is now grown commercially in several states including Illinois Oklahoma. Kansas and Arkansas. The Fibre is made into brooms of All sizes colors and shapes. Bulla the Randolph county commissioners Are trying to work up documentation of the incidents relating to the failure of the medical examiner system in Randolph county. When completed the data will be turned Over to or. Page Hudson state medical examiner. Hie Hassel Over the medical examiner system has been simmering in Randolph for months but Little or nothing was done about it until the situation reached the boiling Point. Or. Marion Griffin who is head of the medical examiners in Randolph claims the system is working but officers who have the duty to investigate death scenes say almost As a group that they cannot get a medical examiner to the scene most of the time. Generally the officers say they Are told to have the body brought to the Hospital by an examiner who does not want to come to the death scene. Complaints have been numerous and the situation is getting worse not better. Some officers say they stand the Chance of facing Law suits if they move a body before the medical examiner has a look at it. They say they do not like the situation at ail. Some officers after waiting a Long time for an examiner to show up Call Randolph county Coroner Julian Brady who usually gets to the scene within minutes after he is called. Brady claims he is not being treated fairly by doctors who resent the fact he is not a medical Man. Officers say Brady has always done an excellent Job for them and they want him to continue to do so. However state Laws have taken away most of the authority of the Coroner to investigate and. Consequently. Brady says he is doing no More than he feels is absolutely necessary. The county commissioners have proposed that Brady be made a medical examiner which is provided for under the state Law. The reaction to this idea by or. Hudson is not known since the county has not officially requested that he look into it. The commissioners will present their request to the state medical examiner along with their request that Brady in included As one of the five medical examiners to serve Randolph county and Hope or. Hudson will receive both with a favourable Eye. The Guil Rand fire department is moving to upgrade itself these Days. Fire chief Garland Wear reports his department has now put into service a new $23,000 water Tanker which will pump 750 Gallons of water a minute. The new Tanker will replace the much smaller 1950 Tanker which has served the area Well for so Long. Chief Wear reports the Guil Rand firemen will soon be sporting the latest in fire protective clothing. He says the order for the clothing has already been placed.
