High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - September 24, 1972, High Point, North Carolina By forr St Cates Here a some peachy Good advice for people who a re tempted to join the do it yourself craze done to in my time i have undertaken dozens of do it yourself projects and to show for it i have a two mashed thumbs resulting from poor aim with a Hammer. The Only reason i done to have three mashed thumbs is because i Only have two thumbs. The third time i missed with the Hammer i had to substitute a Finger for a thumb to hit. A a new Batch of cuss words which i cleverly made up when i hit my dammit Finger with the dammit Hammer and found my old Supply of cuss words totally inadequate for the occasion. A a very interesting Wall papered bathroom which i did myself. What makes it so interesting is that we Haven to been Able to find the commode since i papered the bathroom. Its a shame too because i had just put a new seat on that John. The seat rocked but i did no to mean to do that. Come to think of it i think we Are missing a cat too. The crooked est panelled Wall in existence. I put it up in the basement to hide an ugly old Cement Block Wall. Now i ii have to build another Wall to hide that ugly Obi crooked panelled Wall. The Way things Are going i May wind up with a basement full of nothing but Walls. And you know what do then. try to make it into a museum or something. I Ozmint possibly have advanced so far with my projects if it Hadnot been for those hand Little do it yourself tools you find on the bargain counters. The Best thing about those bargain counter tools of course is their wrapper. The manufacturers encase them in tight Tough plastic. The Way i figure it. They do that so von can to get the tools out to find out How Lousy they Are made. For my birthday somebody gave me some Nail sets firmly embedded in Pla tic naturally. I later had urgent need for a Nail set to hide a Nail which did no to have Anc business where i nailed it i hauled out my trusty of Nail set but quickly found that i did no to have a tool Strong enough to get the wrapper off. I drove to the store and bought a great big cutting tool naturally it was encased in Tough plastic and . To Heck with it i that like most disa steroid events something Good will come eventually from All the Home projects i have undertaken. At least when i list my taxes and come to the place where it asks if you have made any improvements to your House. I can truthfully answer a no a i May even insert a few of my new mss words in that spare on the tax form. Sergio conducts a weekly sunday morning broadcast Over station Wal in Washington i done to know what All the fuss Over the paving of roads is about anyway. Everybody got All up in the air because they thought Alamance county got More than its share of surplus Highway funds. They thought Hies projects were chosen because Alamance is the governors Home county. Ifs not that Way at All. I can Tell you that the state the Highway commission t h e governor does not select which roads will lie paved in that Way. There is simply a meeting each week at which the route i will travel during the following week is mapped out and discussed. Then the order goes out for tile Highway commission to pave or Widen those roads. Almost anywhere i be been in the last few years Tom Vire paving that Road. My car is a moving hunk of tar gravel. And dirt. Sometimes i think i in going to get Wiere i m going without running into the Highway Crew hut they Are always there waving me on or stopping me. One Day last week i was in a line of so Many cars waiting for the signal that it was our turn to go that one Man got out of his car and walked toward tile front of the line staring at the number of cars in disbelief. Actually i am almost always in the Lane facing the Siop sign yield by one of the workers. in a the first one in the Stop Lane 50 cars get the slow sign which enables them to move on i am no. Is. Even when i go out of town i run into the e paving projects i run into fresh tar deformed Road shoulders tons of gravel. The City of High Point does tile same thing to me. In be gotten into some weird situations just going Uptown Irving to get through the Road construction projects. Once it took me an hour to get to Guild old Sears a five minutes to town and j5 around by Faye Marks minutes to find a Way to get into the parking kit. I just could t get there As signs signalled me to Detour Here and there. Finally i went Home and ordered what i wanted from in Catalon sales department. Someone else told me that during some of High paints finest hours of Road construction it was almost impossible fur him to get to work he said that several mornings it crossed his mind to drive on Over to Greensboro and Hunt fur a Job As it would Cut Down his travelling time by fifteen minutes to take the 40 minute ride Over there. The nicest thing about it All la the Way my old ?T67 Cainaros takes All the tar and dirt in stride two or three times in be had to have the service station use special equipment to get or tar off Tbs wheels. And then i have it washed even though i know Iti run into another Road Crew the nest Day. And the Camara comes out yellow As Ever tile Whitewall ii Gin to look White again and my allergy to dust subsides. Sometimes i can actually hear her gasp and wheeze when its All Over. But i just pop a couple of Antihistamine pills in her Gas tank and we go out looking for another a Road construction 50 feet ahead sign.
