High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - September 20, 1972, High Point, North Carolina Everyone has Blue Days High Point Enterprise wednesday sept. 20, 1972 3b by Marya mannes women s news service new York was a Ever Felt sorry for yourself Ever wondered whether life could be tolerable again i would doubt whether any thinking feeling human being could say in All honesty no. A a depression has been a big word All summer. We All know that what senator Eagleton did about it lost him the vice presidency. But i knew about it when i was eight years old because my father who treated me As if i were any age first told me about depression then. A Fine musician who like my Mother was Able to support a family modestly through the practice of his profession he asked me whether i Ever Felt sad sometimes for no reason at All. He knew i did i could never hide anything and he told me that everyone did. Including himself. He said. A there Are Days when i feel an utter failure in life and wonder How i can stand it. I without your Mother and you he paused for a moment and then said a was you grow older you must expect these things. You can to Force them to Stop. But try to find out somehow the real reasons Why you Are sad. Whatever they Are done to try to blame it on others. Self pity is a bad thing. It will Only make things i thought i understood then. As years went on and i saw my father in spells of depression that lasted from a period of a few Days to one whole cataclysmic month where he could not bring himself to practice or play or read or even enjoy the presence of those he loved i began to recognize it As a condition most of us shared. By a us a i suppose i meant the kind of people among whom my brother and i grew up. They were mostly artists musicians painters actors creative sensitive people. They were also vital intense full of life because they made it themselves. And yet All of them at intervals were plunged into bouts of sadness even despair. It should he made Clear Here that these were not the kind of depressions caused by actual failure in love or work or physical health or Money an impossible marriage or Job or environment. Some elements of deprivation Are Clear and present causes. But the a a lows discussed Here Are shapeless Mia Mic Clouds that Darken the mind and soul Drifting unfilled. A you must keep telling yourself a said my father a that these wont last. They will go away even if you think you la never pull out of in those Days we did t go to psychiatrists to help us pull out of them. If the bouts were severe people might go to their family doctors who would prescribe a tonic or a Holiday or a a change of now we can get therapy for depressions mild or severe and if they Are so deep and prolonged that they damage not Only our own lives but those of others help should be sought. But above and beyond that we should rid ourselves of the illusions that a a happiness is a right even if our Constitution entitles us to its Pursuit or the natural condition o f a a Normal human beings. We All dream of it and want it and sometimes Are Lucky enough to experience it either greatly or intermittently through our lives. But like everything else Worth having it has its Price. The dark Side of the soul is like a lunar or solar eclipse part of the Universal order of life like the alternation of tides and seasons and stages of growth in humans As Well As plants. If we can teach ourselves to understand this we can also train ourselves to recognize both the cause and transience of depression look it squarely i in the face and find ways to 1 shift however slowly our emotional gears. Loving someone or something testing the disciplines of work trusting close friends above All forcing ourselves to think of others infinitely More deprived we can Hack our Way through the Thicket. Of not we seek without shame or cause for it someone to guide us out of the swamp or Thicket. Today s recipe Skillet beef noodles by Marian Burro Quick and easy and what a More reasonable.
